We all know about the time our BabyGirl, Aaliyah, wore this flamboyant Cavalli dress at the VMAs in 2000. The Robert Cavalli floor-length striped gown, with a cowl neckline and high-slit lined with feathers was showcased for his Fall/Winter 2000 Ready-To-Wear collection during Milan Fashion Week. The dress (in yellow and black) has remained synonymous with Aaliyah’s style and even spawned a Kim K reference on instagram. Upon posting herself in a red and black version of the dress, Kim’s comments were immediately filled with Aaliyah shoutouts and comparisons.
However, it seems Aaliyah isn’t the only one fit for a shoutout...
Eve (of destruction lol) also wore a version of the Roberto Cavalli in green and black! Funny enough, Eve wore it just days before Aaliyah would stun on the VMA red carpet at the 6th annual Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards on Sept. 2nd, 2000 (VMAs were Sept. 7).
While Aaliyah has paired the dress with an open-toe strappy black heel and no jewelry (although, she may have earrings. I can’t ever tell! Does anyone know if she’s wearing earrings??), Eve has paired the dress with calf-high black leather boots, a diamond necklace, and bracelet. Eve’s styling gives her a more edgy appeal, the green color adds to the punk rock feel of the overall look, and her signature pinkish red short hair nails the theme down.
I wonder what it was about Aaliyah’s styling that makes this dress an iconic look on her, but just another red carpet dress for Eve. Why isn’t this same dress synonymous with Eve? I think it may have to do with Aaliyah’s untimely passing...we simply only have a finite amount of looks to remember her by. Plus, with the exclusion of major accessories, the yellow color so smoothly complimenting her bronze skin, and the natural makeup, she resembles the very trophy she’s holding. Take the photo– the shadow beneath the trophy and the highlight of its gold body mirror the black of the carpet and the yellow of her dress. It’s magnificent!
RIP BabyGirl.

We all know of the iconic white dress designed by William Travilla that Marilyn Monroe wore for her role as “The Girl” in The Seven Year Itch (1955). This gorgeous white cocktail dress consists of a halter-like bodice, plunging neckline and pleated skirt— this classic Greek inspired design remains one of the most important costumes in film history.
But did you know that Roxanne Arlen also wore it in the 1962 film Bachelor Flat for her role as Mrs. Robinson? Both are minimally styled, no jewelry and simple shoes.
Did Travilla loan costume designer Donfeld the famous dress, or is it indicative of something else? According to the book Glamour! Glitter! Romance! by Dale McConathy and former Vogue editor-in-chief Diana Vreeland, Travilla’s white dress was bought off the rack. Although Travilla denied this throughout the years, it still rings in the back of fashion historians’ brains. Could this be supportive evidence for Vreeland’s claims, a great copy, or did Travilla loan the dress for Donfeld to use in the film?
We’ll never know. But does it matter?

We all remember J.Lo’s iconic Grammy’s Red Carpet look in which she donned a sheer green Versace dress with a plunging neckline. The Dress, modeled by Amber Valletta for the SS 2000 Versace collection, was the reason Google Image Search was created.
But did you know that Geri Halliwell aka Baby Spice also wore it? The girl group stunner wore The Dress a month earlier at the NJR Awards in Cannes. Both dresses are styled similarly with metallic, strappy heels and the smallest amount of jewelry. The only real difference is Halliwell’s sun-kissed blonde hair!
Why did the dress go practically unnoticed until J.Lo wore it?
