Many people online seem to miss this fact: even if all the information and stories you read on social media are perfectly accurate and true, they can still fuel an inaccurate worldview, because there are millions of people on these websites and whose stories end up being told and seen is filtered by people affirming their own worldviews. If you frequent r/Lottery and take the people posting there as a representative sample of the world, you’ll come to the conclusion that everybody is winning huge amounts of money in the lottery all the time, because people mostly only post when they win, and the biggest winners get the most upvotes. If you only see the posts that are crossposted to Tumblr or other social media sites, that introduces an additional level of filtering: highly-reblogged posts are going to be the ones everybody likes, that resonate with everybody’s existing opinions.
Therefore, you shouldn’t take anecdotes you see on social media — any of them, no matter true or false — as evidence of what the world is generally like. You shouldn’t rely on anecdotes in general when data exists, they’re unreliable, but social media anecdotes rather than stories from people you know already are an even worse level of poisoned. Getting your opinions about gender relations from Reddit posts you see on Tumblr is like surveying lottery winners to learn the average person’s wealth. Or getting your opinions on trans people from anecdotes in the Daily Mail. Just because the ideological filtering is grassroots doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Do not cite Reddit posts in seriousness as examples of things that happened in the world: you’re letting the average Reddit user be the editor of your newspaper.
