when i was 13, there wasn’t a lot of queer rep in general pop culture. i didn’t see myself in Paul Lynde or Wayland Flowers & Madame or Corporal Klinger.

but there were signs; i just didn’t have any language to express my thoughts. when i was 7 or 8 years old and stared at the cover of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass’ “Whipped Cream & Other Delights” and thought ohhh, that’s what the word ‘sexy’ means… there wasn’t anyone to say “oh, so you think ladies are pretty?” and help me explore that. there was no one to recognize myself in or think “i might be like them.”

and a few years later when i had huge crushes on George Michael and the members of Duran Duran, all the feedback i received was that yes, i was supposed to like boys, so that made sense.

in no way did i even fathom both things could be true back then. it took a very long time, but i got there eventually.
