History of progression charms
Greetings dear reader! It is I, Jude the curious inking out a detailed historical record of the arcane studies of UI and UX development.
Lines on stone
Communication. As social animals communication is an important aspect of our life. At this very moment you are reading my thoughts. This too is a form of communication. In the era of tools or more commonly known as the stone ages, various symbols were carved into stone to communicate and educate fellow humans. Later on as civilizations were born so did the advancement of communication. Hieroglyphics, used by the Egyptians is studied even now. We've come full circle in communication as language is being simplified and abbreviated. The emoji's we react with and use may one day be studied by future generations, just as we now study cavemen drawings.
Brick walls to clickety click!
Making communication as a foundation various services were required by our ancestors. They communicated with one another and begun sharing ideas and stories, developing various industries and technologies such as the wheel, fire and farming. Before modern day businesses, barter methods were used to pay for services. As businesses developed and as we slowly progressed from the industrial era, physical exchange and service providing became an obstacle. And with many hands of dreams and determination, the use of machines were discovered. Although machines were used for various services, there were yet certain objectives that were only achievable by human touch and feel. From using styli of bone to quills of feather, ink pens to carbon, We began tapping physical keys to create words, still using our hands, but with the help of the typewriter as a replacement for the pen. It saved time and helped create a consistent and practical format that could be adopted quickly.
One's and zero's indeed.
Alan Turing who is accredited for being the pioneer of a theory for software paved the way for two prominent fields of study. Computer science and software engineering. With his war winning Turing machine Christopher, mankind stepped into the world of one's and zero's. And so our little machines at home began to think like us. As various software were created we began using them for almost everything in our daily life. Evidently businesses began their online journey and many services were required to be presented online. Even in the past sales representatives and marketing agents were hired mainly for their appearance and charisma. There was a requirement for giving an appealing user interface. And UI design kicked off.
Seeing is believing.
The Xerox Star workstation conjured the rudimentary commercial Graphical User Interface (GUI) in 1973. The infamous “hamburger” menu was passed down as monumental tribute even in today's mobile UI's. As an apprentice learns from their master, learning and understanding this magical technology was tiresome. This resulted in UI designers scrambling their minds to make sure this concept was relatable.
Cue the skeuomorphism.
Skeuomorphism is the concept of giving items represented the resemblance of their real world counterparts. People already had a mental model of a typewriter’s keyboard; they already knew how to type, so the natural progression was to begin interacting with text on digital screens the same way. Similarly knobs and 3d looking buttons were used in websites and software’s. No magician ever learns spells to make mundane tasks easier. They seek out powerful spells and artefacts of divine capabilities.
Abracadabra!
We prefer movies to books. Most of us anyway. Even for studies, watching a YouTube video on the subject sheds light on the muddled words on our study text. There was an ancient Greek scholar who in order to explain to his students the fear of pained death would drown his students in the water and let them experience near death. I'm confident that didn't go on for much longer. Motion was needed to hook the users and make their experience enjoyable and rewarding. And in 2007, By charming various components to move and change color motion animations were implemented into UI design. We not only gave an intuitive feel but inspired many people to be apprentices of this scholarly endeavor. There is a saying among the great sages of UI design, “If people can’t find it, it doesn’t exist.” which means that with touch based UI there came a price. Following trends, some UI wizards hid many essential functions and available interactions behind a sleek façade. The aforementioned hamburger menu is one example; it has usability issues because of its hidden navigation. They have low discoverability, therefore, less efficiency.
"Out of touch" by Hall & Oates.
How often do we use Siri? Or any other AI system? We summon people and are guided to various locations daily by VUI. Voice user interface. The ultimate solution to the errors of human touch. Efficient and interactive. The ultimate dream for user experience and interaction has become a reality. Although still experimental users can now interact with each other through the powers of the relic known as virtual reality. The Metaverse has begun spreading it's wings in our society and through the gift of human innovation and creativity, we can now step into a future of sensory user interaction, interface and experience. From rotors and gears to one's and zero's to virtual apparitions, the progressive spells used in UI and UX design are wonderful. While there are certain drawbacks of health deterioration, elixirs and technologies are used to make UI and UX less distressing and more comforting. Reader beware! Sweat and blood was poured into making this a reality and many scrolls and books were referenced. If you wish to take part in this sacred study, you must open your minds and dream of endless possibilities

For the book cover for interactive, I decided to go with the magical and fantasy theme. Although mainly focusing on Alchemical and wizard elements. I wish to show interstate as the junction or stepping stone between two states, they being apprentice and sorcerer. From past foundation of designs to the futuristic dreams of design we are indeed in an interstate of design.
