14 Best Places In Ontario To Visit

Ontario, like the rest of Canada (obviously), is a massive province in Canada! It may not be the most populous of all the provinces, but it does have the most people. With a slew of the best places in Ontario scattered throughout the province, it's a great place to visit.
Whether you wish to tour more of Canada or just visit Niagara Falls, Ontario has a lot of great spots to visit, from the rush and bustle of cities like Toronto. Though, be advised, it's still a huge area, and it's unlikely you'll be able to see all in one trip. Unless, of course, you're going to be there for a long time!
After visiting Ontario a few times, I thought I'd share some of my favorite spots as well as the best places to visit in Ontario on your next trip.
To be honest, Canada is an amazing country, and I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time there!
Take a look at the greatest spots to visit in Ontario in the list below.
Niagara Falls is the first of the three
In fact, Niagara Falls is without a doubt one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ontario, and it's not hard to see why.
The haunted homes and casinos are fun, but it's also got the magnificent falls themselves, which is why you go there in the first place, let's face it.
Niagara Falls, which is located on the border between the United States and Canada, is a great day trip from Toronto or a day excursion from Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Niagara Helicopters will take you directly above the falls if you wish to see them from the air. Take a Journey Behind the Falls, which is entirely based on the Canadian side of the Falls.
That said, head out on the Hornblower and get a little misty from the falls themselves if you want a little wet.
They're all wonderful ways to spend a few hours in Niagara Falls, and they're all fun.
Toronto is the second city on the list, after New York City
Okay, so Toronto, along with Vancouver and St. John's, is undoubtedly one of my favorite Canadian cities.
Toronto, with its long history, frequently reminds me of a 'Canadian New York.' It appears to have all of the excitement of a major global city, as well as the great kindness that Canadians are known for!
When you arrive, make sure to climb the CN Tower for a spectacular perspective of the city at dusk.
Alternatively, take a walk on one of the world's highest skyscraper treks on an Edge Walk, which will take you outside. It's both thrilling and horrifying at the same time, to be honest!
After that, go to Chubby's Jamaican Kitchen for some of Toronto's greatest jerk and eateries. Also, take a tour around Casa Loma and the Distillery District. Toronto is without a doubt one of the top cities in the province, especially if you're looking for a city vacation.

Thunder Bay is the third city on the list to visit.
So, if you want to learn more about the history of the region, Thunder Bay is without a doubt one of the best destinations to go in Ontario.
Fort William Historical Park is a living historical park with over forty buildings that will transport you back in time to the 18th century. As soon as you've arrived,
This region was a commercial post, an Ojibwa settlement, and a small farm in 1815. Visitors can get a sense of how life was in the early 1800s by seeing historical reenactments. During the summer, this unconventional look at history is open every day. I know you're a history enthusiast, so go visit and learn about local history.
If you're looking for a break from the city, don't forget to visit the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. In the summer months, it offers a lot of paths that are great for hiking. Plus, the views are spectacular!
The Silver Birch, for a good bite, is a restaurant that focuses on using local ingredients in all of its dishes. I love their bison burgers.
Windsor (no.4)
Windsor (Ontario) is not to be mistaken with Windsor in the United Kingdom, although it is an excellent destination to visit if you're in the province's southernmost region.
Windsor is well-known for its casinos, but it's also a city with a lot more to offer. Take a tour around Dieppe Gardens, the Olde Walkerville Neighborhood, and Willistead Manor once you've arrived.
If you're traveling close to the city, it's a great place to stop for a half-day (or day excursion) if you're passing through.
Pelee Island (no. 5)
Exploring Pelee Island, the largest island on Lake Erie, is undoubtedly one of the top things to do in Ontario when you're on the Erie shoreline.
Now you can reach here by ferry or plane, with departures from Leamington, Kingsville, and Sandusky. More information about their scheduled times can be found here.
To be honest, it's one of the nicest places in Ontario to relax and unwind on a small island. The 28-kilometer cycle ride around the island is a great way to get your heart rate up while watching the sunset over Lake Erie.
This is a generally overlooked section of Ontario for many international visitors (and some Canadians), but it is well worth a visit for a quick trip.
Ottawa (six)
When we arrived in Gatineau, we paid a visit to Ottawa as part of our tour of Quebec.
The river is actually the provincial border, and while it appears to be one large city, it is actually Ottawa and Gatineau (in both Ontario and Quebec).
Take a brief trip along the river once you've arrived (or use the very short boat service to hop between both cities).
It's a fantastic way to get a different view on the city.
After that, proceed to Parliament Hill, the National Gallery, and Byward Market for some of the city's best street food; I swear, we ate a lot of it! If you're a huge museum fan (like me), you should also visit the Museum of Nature.
It's a vast area with a lot to see.
After all of the museums, head over to the Peace Tower and finish the day with a visit to the Basilica of Notre Dame. Inside, it's a sight to behold.
Also, if you're looking for some delicious pancakes, go to the Baker Street Cafe. They have the city's fluffiest pancakes.
Stratford (no. 7)
Stratford, located a few hundred kilometers west of Toronto, is an accessible place to visit on a day trip from Toronto or if you want to see more of Southern Ontario.
The name now instantly conjures up images of Stratford in the United Kingdom, and the River Avon, which runs through the city, serves as a reminder of where the first settlers arrived in the 1820s.
Once you've arrived, attempt to schedule your trip around some of the city's major events.
The Stratford Festival, for example, is a one-of-a-kind event that includes plays largely by Shakespeare each year. It's commonly referred to as one of North America's largest repertory theatrical festivals!
After that, visit the Stratford Perth Museum and City Hall, which is a magnificent structure. Also, if you're hungry, stop by The Red Rabbit for some of the city's juiciest steaks.
Kitchener (no. 8)
Kitchener, which is not far from Hamilton or Toronto, is one of the greatest destinations in Ontario to visit a Mennonite-founded village with a long history.
All of this German legacy is still alive and well today, as it hosts the world's largest Oktoberfest outside of Germany.
Every October, around the Canadian Thanksgiving holiday, the festival lasts nine days, which, let's face it, is a good idea with all those hangovers!
Not to worry though; there are many of craft breweries like Descendants Beer and Beverage Co Ltd that offer seasonal (and award-winning) brews to enjoy all year round if you don't make it here around Oktoberfest time.
Go to Doon Heritage Village after all those beers to see what life was like in the past. Alternatively, visit the Waterloo Region Museum of Ken Seiling. It's Ontario's largest community museum, and it's a terrific location to go if the weather isn't cooperating.
In addition, there's a small Kissing Bridge in West Montrose that's just a short drive away!
Gananoque (nine)
Gananoque, located just a few kilometers from the US border south of Ottawa, is probably one of the best places in Ontario to go island hopping.
There is a Thousand Islands boat trip that you can take to see some of the tiny (and quite large) islands that make up this area, and that is what makes this area and the St. Lawrence River so appealing.
Follow up with a visit to the 1000 Islands History Museum, the Playhouse, and a delicious cheesecake at the Panache Cafe!
Niagara-on-the-Lake (number 10)
Okay, so Niagara-on-the-Lake (shhh, don't tell the others) is one of my favorite tiny towns in Canada!
When you're near Niagara Falls, this charming and ancient village is a must-see, and it's quite easy to get to by automobile (even from Toronto).
Visit the historic center by horse-drawn carriage, learn more about the town's "bumpy" past, and dine at some of the best restaurants in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
We stayed for a couple of days and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. You can also combine it with a visit to some of the region's Ice Wine wineries.
Island of Manitoulin (no. 11)
Manitoulin Island, located in Lake Huron, is the world's largest freshwater island! It's one of the best places to visit in Ontario if you want to spend some time in nature and relax.
Take the Cup and Saucer Hiking Trail, for example, if you want to take a hike and see some of Canada's most beautiful scenery. Make time to visit Bridal Veil Falls as well as the South Baymouth Range Lighthouses, which are well-known for their beauty.
Oh, and the Strawberry Island Lighthouse is absolutely stunning!
After that, visit the Perivale Gallery, which is a great place to pick up some local art and a great place to buy some local crafts.
Algonquin (no. 12)
If you're going further north in Ontario, Algonquin Provincial Park is probably one of the best places to visit. You see, even though Algonquin is a little out of the way, it's still a great place to visit during the summer.
If you're driving, it'll take you about 3-4 hours from Toronto to get there. If you want to get away from the city and see Canada's true wilderness, this is the perfect weekend getaway.
There are a lot of moose and bears here, so make sure to follow the local advice. Always check in at the Algonquin Visitor Centre if you're unsure about your safety. They'll keep you up to speed on the safest methods to trek and explore the area.
The Lookout trail is a fantastic hike, just make sure you wear comfortable shoes!
National Park of Pukaskwa (no. 13)
On top of Lake Superior, Pukaskwa National Park is a stunning destination! It's also a great place to stop on your way to Thunder Bay from the east.
Take the trail that crosses the suspension bridge once you've arrived (the suspension bridge trail). There are some steep elevation points on this trail, as there are on all trails.
There are also some lovely shoreline hikes to be had, as well as a lot of fun kayaking.
14.) Nipissing Lake
Because it is one of Ontario's largest lakes, Lake Nipissing is certainly one of the greatest spots to visit if you want to get away from it all and enjoy nature.
For me, it's the kind of spot where you can just unwind and enjoy the beauty of Canada's great outdoors. It's both gorgeous and tranquil.

2. Concerts and live shows are still prohibited.
There is only one ticket to be purchased if you were intending on visiting www.TorontoClubs.com and purchasing a ticket for a live event in Toronto, and that ticket is for a music festival in 2022.
Live shows and concerts are still not allowed in the Toronto area, or anyplace else in Ontario for that matter, as you would have predicted. For the time being, you'll have to wait to see your favorite performer perform live on stage. On the plus side, if the health condition improves, this could alter in the near future.
Concert halls, theatres, and cinemas, on the other hand, are allowed to open outside, but only for the purpose of rehearsing or performing a recorded or telecast event with no audience. There can only be 10 artists on stage at any given time, and they must all be at least 3 meters apart. It's not much, but at the very least you'll be able to see a concert from the comfort of your own home.
Before we can make any conclusions or projections about when live acts and concerts with an audience will be allowed again, we still have to wait to see the findings of the Reopening Ontario Act. For the time being, you'll have to stick with some of these entertaining activities and try to make them into a party.
3. Today's Fun Things to Do in Toronto
These outdoor recreation activities and facilities have reopened with some restrictions in place, chiefly physical distance:
Playgrounds and parks
Batting cages and baseball diamonds
Courts for basketball, football, and other sports
Park with a skating rink
Picnic spots in the park
Facilities for horseback riding
Now, none of them scream "party" and you're confined to groups of less than 10 people, but what constitutes a party is how you spend your time, not where you spend it.
Having a good game of pickup basketball may be equally enjoyable as a night out at a club. You could even play while listening to music. If there are less than ten people in the company and you're all practicing appropriate social distancing, an outside picnic might rapidly evolve into a party-like gathering. All of the other activities and amenities on our list are the same way.
Keeping a safe distance and being safe is the most critical thing you should know how to do. The sooner the clubs and venues open, the better you'll do it.
4. Weddings are back, in a sense.
A party is always a good idea during a wedding. They aren't returning in full force, however.
Weddings can now be held both indoors and outdoors, but the crucial word here is "ceremony." Naturally, religious services are allowed both indoors and outdoors, but receptions and gatherings are still prohibited both indoors and outside.
With your family and household members present, albeit at a safe distance, you can get married, but you can't celebrate with them afterwards.
5. The use of facemasks is still necessary
A facemask must be worn at all times when doing anything indoors. We don't know how long this will last, but regardless of the event you're attending, you'll still have to cover your face when you're indoors for the time being.
There are, of course, certain exceptions to this rule. Individuals who have certain medical issues that make wearing a mask problematic, for example, are not forced to wear one. A mask is also not necessary to be worn by children under the age of two.
In addition, even in the outdoors, the city of Toronto strongly advises residents to use a facemask or a face covering if they are unable to maintain a safe physical distance.
Conclusion
When it comes to partying, as you can see, not much has changed since the old days. We still don't know when the clubs and shows will be allowed, and we don't know when they'll be allowed. We are, nonetheless, optimistic. If everything goes according to plan, it might happen in a matter of months. For the time being, all you have to do is be patient and wait.
Until the situation improves, have a party at home with your family or take advantage of some of the other enjoyable activities that were made feasible just a few days ago.

Toronto has a lot to offer as one of Canada's largest cities, but much of it comes at a cost. Here's how to get around the fees and enjoy Toronto for free.
1. A free museum can be found by searching the Internet for
A variety of world-class museums can be found in Toronto, and most of them are free to visit one evening a week. On Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., visit the Art Gallery of Ontario for a free guided tour of classic and contemporary art from across the world. Don't miss out on the annual al fresco Shakespeare plays in High Park if you're in Toronto from mid-June to the end of August. Although they are free events, the quality of the staging, costumes, and actors is unquestionably excellent. Come 45 minutes to an hour before the performance to ensure that you have a seat. Bring something to eat while you watch!
7. Go to the beach.
While the white sands of paradise may not sound like a beach on the banks of a lake, Toronto's beaches are surprisingly welcoming. In the summer months of July and August, the most popular beaches are Woodbine and Kew, which are great places to watch people while getting some sun. The quality of the water is acceptable, although it is far from crystal clear.
Go to the Beaches International Jazz Festival, a free annual event hosted in neighboring Woodbine Park, if you visit in July. Even if you're not a fan of jazz, this is a great place to enjoy a few beers on a warm evening because of its lively environment.
8. Take in a free film
The city is home to the star-studded Toronto International Film Festival and is used as an alternative to New York for film shooting throughout the year. The Tiff Cinematheque has a permanent free screen for experimental films, with tickets available two hours before the screening on a first-come, first-served basis.

We're as excited about travel as the next person, but with the current state of affairs, we're still a long way off. This city, fortunately, is primed for re-discovery. There's a lot to do in Toronto and the surrounding areas, from outdoor activities to virtual events.
We'll be able to wander a little further outside of Toronto's limits in the coming weeks, when lockdown lifts and spring has sprung. Towards the east of the city is Prince Edward County, and to the west is Niagara, which is home to a number of wineries worth visiting. We are surrounded by attractions, many of which are only a short drive away.
Of course, while you're waiting, take a look around the rest of the Escapism website to get your destination fantasies started.
