I don’t want to be divisive but I just need to say it: if you’re not black, I don’t think you can truly understand what this feels like.

You can empathize, and god I thank all of you for doing so, but you don’t feel it.

Not in the way every little black kid’s eyes lit up when they realized people who looked like them had a story to show about bordeline ethereal lands that showed them they came from somewhere beautiful, not just from a fucking boat.

Not in the way so many boys and even grown men felt pride swell in their chest at seeing themselves on screen as a powerful king, as a superhero.

Not in the way black girls and women everywhere felt encouraged to wear their hair out the way it grows from their scalp or shaved or threaded or any way they want to— and boys too!

Not in the way every single product of the diaspora, not just in the United States, saw themselves as something better, bigger, than what we’ve been reduced to over the course of history.

Black Panther came when we needed it the most, and Chadwick Boseman did so fucking much in the times before, during, and after the movie came out. He didn’t get dismiss it as “another superhero movie”. He didn’t “put up” with kids wanting to meet their hero, or older people wanting to express their gratitude because “when I was younger, I never thought I’d see someone that looks like me doing that”. He was key in us being able to feel good about ourselves across the board.

Chadick Boseman isn’t a character, and it would be horrendous to reduce him to such, but we can’t ignore the impact of his presence.

I’ve been crying since I woke up at 3AM to 24 texts telling me about the news in some way or another. I went to bed at 9PM last night, an hour before the news broke. I haven’t slept since then, and I don’t think I’ll be able to at any point today, because, y’all. I just can’t stop feeling.

Chadwick knew he had a limited amount of time left on this earth so he lived every single day to the fullest. He made five fantastic movies, brought a king to life on our screens, marched in the streets for the rights of so many people, and married the woman he loved. 

Don’t just remember Chadwick for the movies he made. Remember him for the incredible man that he was. Because he lived. He lived.

the thing that’s getting me about chadwick, is how tired he must have been. how much strength it takes to be undergoing painful treatment and invasive surgery, and to still be creating art. to know you probably will not live to a ripe old age and to say “i’m creating a legacy now” and using the time you have on this earth to tell black stories, to embody a warrior and a king for black people to see themselves reflected in, to create art. that sort of strength deserved to live, it deserved to survive. it’s so incredibly unfair.

rest in power chadwick, we watched you play a hero but little did we know, the hero was you all along. wakanda forever and always king.

I decided to repaint the “La Bandera” card from my queer version of the traditional Mexican game of Lotería as the POC Pride flag. Previously, it had been the standard rainbow flag. I wanted to highlight the struggles and achievements of POC queer folks in this painting, especially now, in light of current tragedies and protests (and it also feels appropriate to a Mexican game!). I have not been posting to social media for a week or so, other than to share the work of black artists, because I did not want to distract from black voices. But I want to do something to help, so I decided to offer all money from the sale of this painting to the NAACP. The money from all  prints of it purchased on Etsy will be donated. Also, I am offering the original in a sort of auction, and the money will be given to the NAACP as well. I am offering it for a starting “bid” of 200 USD. Whoever offers me most will get it, and i will donate the money to the NAACP right away.  Just send me a private message at my instagram account @felixdeon and I’ll post it for you! Fury was fidgeting in his chair, which was extremely odd. The man had always been so sure about what he was going to say, what order he was going to give, or who he was going to yell at. His unease was making your stomach knot up. 

Sam nudged you with his elbow. “What’s going on?” he whispered, eyes darting from you to your shared superior.

You shrugged and shook your head. “I don’t know.” 

Fury cleared his throat and shuffled some papers, all while looking anywhere other than at you or Sam. “So, I uh, I have some news.”
