The Power within Technology
We at create Caribbean are finding information from evens that occurred years ago and placing them on platform which are readily available to users. We have archive such as SPAT where you get to look at picture of person and get information on things that occurred in the past. The author of the article is showing readers how technology makes it so much easier to save and find information also in case of an accident, where this information can be lost ,we have a digital copy.
The author speak to us about his experiment called “The real Face of White Australia’ which uses real pictures which are later place as a digital copy of the original. This were made available through the national archives of Australia’s collection databaseThe reader and his colleagues are trying to digitize as many old photographs as they can.
They also are trying to establish the relationship or link between this pictures and find out the story line that lead to certain events.
Furthermore, He states technology can help. By my just typing a word in the archives you can find many different content. We no longer need to go pages through pages to get information on an specific person or subject. He continue to say that the internet allow us to free ourselves and be who we want to be as well as to write our view on certain topic or matters. No one has the authority and everyone can express their self differently.
The author tell us about Zotero which I personally get to use in my digital humanities class. Zotero allows you to capture, annotate and organize research materials. You can share your collection with other groups.

What We Think We Will Build and What We Build in Digital Humanities by William G. Thomas
The author states in his introductory paragraph that what digital humanist think their are going to build is completely different from what they build. I personally think this is true because at the beginning the project I had for economics and politics is completely different now.
In the article he give us some question to help us figure out what a true digital Humanist project should look like.
1. Is an archive an argument? And a related question, where is our scholarship?
Archive is a collection of document that are digitize. This document are assemble and analyze by a digital scholar. The digital archive are build so that information may be readily available and ready to use by a large audience.
The scholar are the people who are making this information available to the public.
2. How do we work in teams of scholars in the humanities?
The project that Digital humanist do are mostly collaborative this is because they work with librarians, other humanist and with he different technology available.
Mr Thomas states that he had to work with a team of graduate student so that they could increase their knowledge and experience.
3. What does scholarly argument look like in digital form?
After the information has been obtain the creator has to put this in a platform to make it available to an audience. The information has to be place in different ways of knowing, viewing, reading and learning.
At the end if our project is different from the idea before hand the creator should celebrate the differences.

It’s All About the Stuff: “Power can be reclaimed” ~Tim Sherratt
Tim Sherratt is all about making the use of technology easier and more efficient. He spoke passionately about the administration knows as the White Australia Policy or the Real face of White Australia. He describes it as an experiment which uses facial detection to technology to locate and extract photographs from digital copies of the original certificates “representing thousands of lives, all monitored and controlled” in the National Archives of Australia. He revealed information about people who were affected by segregation of Australia. He highlights that these were powerless victims of a repressive system.
As a digital humanists we are responsible for recovering and delivering information that is significant to people’s knowledge. Using Sherratt’s platform as inspiration, we can revive the identities of the “Real face of White Australia” by learning about their lifestyles, their characteristics, their personalities. We, as digital humanists, can also create our own projects about the historic lives of those who have impacted our thoughts in one way or the other. Rebuilding identities and informing the world about these people who were probably forgotten.
There are a number of open sources which can aid digital humanists (like myself) in such great projects ranging from Django to Isotope to Zotero. Sherratt dived deep into his project and how he did every aspect. I am astonished and inspired by his efforts to discover more about the lives of these special people. He really dug deep to link the original certificates from the National Archives. According to Margaret Hedstrom, “the archival interface is a site where power is negotiated and exercised” The idea is to give power to the people in history. Do something with the sealed information in the archives. Open them up, read, learn and discover more about their lives and how they did what they did or how they endured what they went through. Digital Humanists must make the information come alive to the audience. Unravel photographs, statistics; any piece of information that would challenge us to do something, to think something or to feel something.
There is so much I would like to expound on based on this reading, but my words are limited. However, I will touch on the part of this article which impacted me the most; “Power can be reclaimed.” Digital humanists know that information become instruments of empowerment and liberation, salvation and freedom (Eric Ketelaar). The information that Tim Sherratt outlined in his article was meant to erupt feelings and bring about understanding of the Lives of real face of White Australia. His means of getting the information reflected how the work of digital humanists should be; work of passion. The idea of gathering historic information and allow the power of history to be reclaimed.

Neatline
Neatline is as platform which allows users to tell stories with maps and timeline. It present an interactive environment that allow users to attack items and narrative withing their geographical space.it also allow person to design a wide variety of different materials.
When creating maps you either choose your own map creation or base layer option. When making a historical analysis you use a historical maps but if this is not available you can use “stamen watercolor” or “stamen Terrain” options.
If your making an analysis of a current event you can use a modern map.
You can use geo-reference if you want to make mention of an specific street.
When plotting you can either use points or polygons to map different areas. If you want to show an specific place you can use point but if you not sure of the street you can use polygon. When creating custom points you can use .jpg.
Neatline provide date ambiguity so that the readers don’t be mislead and given a wrong date.
I would enjoy using neatline in an upcoming project because I think it would be a create and fun flat form to use. I would be able to walk with the audience an show them specific place when important event took place.

I really enjoy reading your blog it was really clear and straight forward it helped me understand the author better. keep working hard :)
Designing Sustainable Research Projects
Digital humanities projects and publications need to know the research objectives and available technologies or resources. A digital collection involves many interrelated activities. Examination of the information will educate investigation of the objectives.
Humanists examine human artifacts. Any object created by humans which may be a primary object of interest or serve as proof of human activities, would be considered an aritfact. Users are the creators and must maintain the project. User functions into three types: querying (question/ evaluating), rendering, and navigation. Rendering and querying are two primary operations performed on XML-encoded textual documents. Economy must also be considered when completing these projects.
Data must not be simply entered into computers, but additional data must use. Data in databases are thoroughly organized and orderly and most chronicled archives and records basically. The information in computers exists in a coded form which is mechanically read and processed by the computer, with the use of the binary system.
Information represented in databases is characterized as “data-centric”, and information represented in mark-up technologies is characterized as “document-centric.” File data controls the files used to store digital information.
Descriptive data function as a scholarly surrogate for an object and is needed to distinguish objects used in building as well as objects digitally represented in a research collection. In computerized research recording and monitoring the sources and evidence utilized as a part of making a research project is as critical as it is in conventional research.
A procedure where collaboration is utilized build up the venture is known as collaborative design. Collaboration exhibits challenges most humanists generally work alone and share the research’s results, not the procedure. A challenge of collaboration is balancing individual interests and shared objectives.
The distinction between document-centric and data-centric information, although it is useful, it proves to be problematic. It is a valuable refinement since it highlights the qualities of markup dialects and databases, in spite of the fact that it doesn’t reflect data reality, all things considered.

Designing a project
At Create Caribbean we get assigned to different project, advice on how to get the specific information as well as how to publish the different information. With every new project we are advice to research and get familiarize with the project and to do everything possible for this project to be enjoyed by the audience.
Firstly,In ‘Designing Sustainable Projects and Publications,’ the author tells the reader that when designing a project we must first get familiar with the topic as well as with the technology that is available. It is important that the scholar have a clear understanding of the objective and the resources available to be use to achieve them. The scholar need to collaborate with the technology available in the designing process which will bring greater understanding, experience and expertise to the work.
Furthermore, collaborative design involves analyzing and defining and represent data in detail. Data must not just be entered into the computer but the relation must be established between the data components also with additional data that identify this components. This is important so that the scholar can instruct the computer and find the data easily.
The scholar must also consider the cost of computer hardware and software also the maintenance costs because the computers can get damage. Human resources must also be considered because this person must be devoted to do the designing , data production and maintenance, prototyping and the implementation.
Designing and publishing project is time consuming and patience is needed but at the end of it project the scholar ends up with more knowledge and understanding of the system. Also how to better their work in the next project.

What Digital Humanists Do
Digital humanists read and respond to literary, historical and cultural artifacts by the use of technology. The information can be presented as a poem, prose, or blog.
Digital humanists work on project such as knowledge site , digital edition , database , geographic mapping site , digital 3D model , online event and crowdsourcing project. They do this to make work on public domain more accessible, to work with a particular type of data that have no specialized catalog.
Some of this project involved the knowledge of MySQL ,PHP, Neatline, Omeka , GeoCommons, ArcGIS, 3D-modeling programs, VanillaForums, ProBoards, HTM, ArcGIS and placing the information on Scalar.
I think that Digital 3D modeling and geographic site requires a lot of work but are really exciting because you get to work with detailed model of a particular space or area based on historical data which allows users to explore and “walk” into the space or area also you explore a text by grounding them in their geographical landscape and explore the relationship between text and “real” space. This project are really big. Examples of this projects are The Negro Travelers, PoetryBox, Mapping the Lakes ,Map of Early Modern London, Digital Magnesia,HyperCities and Digital Karnak.
In the near future I would love to work on project containing Digital 3D modeling and geographic.

is everything somehow linked?
Economics is how society is able to allocate resources and use them to best of their ability. I think economics is very important because this show us how people use resources to get through their daily life. If we have to look back at the maroon; how they were able to use what was available in the large forest for survivable . The maroon were also able to use trees to make houses ,canoes and weaponry. This weapons where use to resist the slave masters. We can link why the maroon were in the forest to resistance. The maroon left the plantation because they could no longer cope or deal with the slave system. They were tired and angry at the way in which they were treated. So by running away was a form of resistance.
The African slave protested by they only method they could and this was by revolting. The planters didn’t want to set them free but the revolt through out the Caribbean were so massive that they had to listen and finally emancipated the black in 1838.
Why were the African enslaves; because of race and power. The Africans where physically different from the white and they didn’t have the man power to fight backs. If we look at when they were in the triangular of trade and they slave fought back but were overcome because of the Superior weaponry of the whites.
This is the way in which I can understand economics, resistance, protest, race and power. By looking back at the times in history this key term were highlighted it helps me to see that everything that happen in the past is link. Just like how this term can be link to one another I think every situation or problem we are facing in the world can as well be linked.

Learning how to get people interested
We live in a world where everything is now being marketed on the internet. Historian works are not the ones with many views online because they don’t advertise or target an audience. If historians or writers want their work viewed they as well need to get on board and market their work to specific readers.
In the article building and audience the author tell us that Digital historians are no expending much time finding out who is their targeted audience or in other words who do we want to read their work, updating their website and making it worthwhile. The author give us one of the reasons why they don’t advertise. They don’t worry about advertising because its not the number of people who visit their work that determines if its good but who understands and enjoy their work. But if they don’t advertise how will reader find their work?it doesn't matter how great their work is if they don’t advertise it the readers will not be able to find it. They will only find their work by chances and luck.
The author goes on to say that having a self-published website can reach a small and targeted audiences cost effectively because their advertisement can be found by many readers while just scrolling through Facebook better than hearing it from word of mouth.
The author give two basic principle to create and maintain a useful and used website. This is by thinking what is the purpose of the website and who are you planning to target. Also if the website is attracting not the targeted audience then they should rethink who is the audience they want to attract.
I agree with the author, historians and writes should think of a target market and advertise their work.

Is the world revolving on Asynchronous
The world is now becoming more asynchronous. This can be seen because everything around us is now involving around the internet .e.g. business meeting, online classes, buying and selling of goods. You no longer need to go to a classroom , meet face to face and do group work which are synchronous to engage in learning because you can now join an online classroom. The online classroom may not provide you with comfort and warmness that you feel in a room with peers and it may be somewhat lonely but is convenient.
While reading “Synchronous and Asynchronous Technologies: When Real Worlds Collide” i can see that the author is trying to show us that the world has departed from synchronous and is now more asynchronous or has find ways to turn synchronous into asynchronous without us realizing it. He give us Skype and hangout as example of this.
The author want us to balance both Asynchronous and synchronous because too much of somethings is not good.
The author then goes to agree with Ursula Frankli; who also agrees that the world is increase in asynchronous activities to a point that is part of our daily lives. She links synchronous and asynchronous to the concepts of organism and mechanism. She suggest that dominantly asynchronous society has more to do with being a mechanism rather than an organism because machines are assembled from parts that to lie without purpose which do not contribute to the function of the machine while in the other hand an organism grows, adapts to changes around them and is never apart but always with the whole.
As the author reaches the end he tell us that we need a balance of both synchronous and asynchronous to remain with relevant context, that technology is altering some of our basic communication skills, and reinforcing them. In his conclusion he tell us that education is important. If we educate our self we will be able to choose how much dominance asynchronous activity have in our life and I totally agree with this.
