people say folks with adhd struggle with "delayed rewards" aka long term goals and as such we tend to focus more on short term rewards. what they don't talk about is that at when we Do accomplish long term goals we don't actually feel anything proportionate to the amount of work we did to achieve it. In my head I suffered for a while and then money spontaneously appeared in my bank account.

i made this because i find pain to be a multifaceted thing that influences me in different ways. i can accomplish lots of small tasks while in pain but that doesnt mean i can move around or even think clearly. its name is the goldstein expanded pain index or gepi. you can use it if you want. or not.

“Verbal” labels and the verbalizing spectrum

One autistic trait is having different-than-average patterns of verbalizing. We like to categorize these patterns of verbalizing as hyperverbal, semiverbal, and nonverbal (Some autists prefer the terms semispeaking and nonspeaking).

Hyperverbal

A person who is hyperverbal is someone who speaks more than would be typical. This could look like:

Has and uses a very rich vocabulary

Uses more words than would be typical in order to communicate an idea

Speaks to themselves (“thinking out loud”)

Tends to ramble; speaks without seeming to have an end goal in mind

Seeks opportunities to speak, which may be deemed “inappropriate” or “rude”

Not realizes that they are speaking

Uses a lot of echolalia

Has above average language skills

Semiverbal

Semiverbal people struggle with speech and cannot communicate very efficiently using verbal language. Some traits include:

Communicating using single words or phrases instead of complete sentences

Taking a while and/or having difficulty translating ideas into verbal language

Preferring to use gestures (nodding, pointing, etc) instead of speaking

“Borrowing” phrases from other people to communicate

Relying on a handful of rehearsed phrases/words for communication

Not being able to complete a sentence or idea after starting to speak

Using words/phrases that may not make sense to others

Relying on echolalia to communicate

Finding it easier to use AAC than verbal language

Nonverbal

Nonverbal people are people who cannot speak to communicate, or can speak in an extremely limited manner that does not facilitate efficient communication. That does not mean that nonverbal people are incapable of any communication or that they cannot understand speech. This may look like:

Communicating using echolalia and other verbal stimming

Using noises to communicate rather than words

Using spoken words for purposes other than communication (i. e. Stimming)

Being unable to translate thoughts/ideas into verbal language

Using only AAC to communicate

It’s not a trichotomy

Like most autistic traits, these labels are not boxes for each autistic person to fit into, but rather benchmarks along a spectrum. Autistic people can fall anywhere on this spectrum.

For example, someone who is semiverbal may only be able to say two sentences, and therefore may be closer to the right endpoint, whereas there may be semiverbal people who are closer to the middle. Someone who is hyperverbal may only be slightly so and also close to the middle, and another hyperverbal person may be all the way to the left.

Can my place on the spectrum change?

Definitely. I used to be extremely hyperverbal as a child, and now I am distinctly semiverbal. This is likely common, as some autistic people may become burnt out and loose their ability to communicate via speech.

But, it’s important to understand that these labels are meant to describe long standing patterns, not single points in time. During meltdowns or low spoon days, many hyper and semi verbal autistic people may find themselves unable to speak at all. This does not mean you “go nonverbal/semiverbal sometimes”; it just means that you’re having a rough day. But if that’s your normal, if that’s usually how your communication abilities are, then you might be semi or non verbal.
