Everyone always goes on about Junichi Masuda, but can we get some love for Benimaru Itoh? These are his illustrations for the 1996 Pokémon Illustrated Encyclopedia, the first game guide and real-life Pokédex for Pokémon Red & Green versions. When Itoh-san illustrated these Pokémon, there was no official artwork for them. The original 151 Pokémon were designed as sprites from the very beginning, with Masuda refining and standardising the artwork much later on, which resulted in various alterations to Pokémon designs from their original sprites.
