When I was in my first fandom in ~2013 everyone was commenting on everyone's fanfiction for the sole reason that it was impossible to advertise your story in any other way (individual blog sites). So it was totally normal to finish your first comment with "oh btw I check out my blog too if you want I write this too ^^" (obviously the comments themselves were longer than two sentences long so it wasn't a bland advertisement)
(basically almost always commentators == fanfic authors and if you were a not-writing commentator there was some small expectation that probably one day you'll make a story too)
And. I don't really ever see it on ao3? Is it just not the done thing? I suppose it's much, much easier to find the stories for your fandom there so it's not necessary... But I think it really helped to build the community. Still, I feel like if I did it now it'd be rude
(was it even ever a thing in English fandom? I mean I doubt that it was my country's fandom specific thing but who knows)
I don't specifically remember that happening? But I was on a fic reading/writing hiatus at that point so I'm not the best to know.
I will say, as a member of a small fandom with some very supportive people in it, that it's actually also possible for authors to shout out other authors either in comment replies to readers or in their author's notes. It's a great way to cheer on your fellow writers and also guide readers (or listeners, in the case of podfics!) to other content they might enjoy.
Another way that I see more often on AO3 is to make use of the inspired by feature and the gift work feature - both of which help creators share their love and excitement and build on each other's work. (can you tell I'm a fan?)
I'm also a huge proponent of making use of your profile page to let folks know where they can find you. And while you're there, maybe throw up a fanworks permission statement so that other fans know whether you'd appreciate art or podfics etc. of your works!

go on more walks. walk for no reason. walk to solve a problem. walk to blow off steam. walk to get outside. walk to listen, read, and learn. walk to escape distractions. walk to improve your health. walk to think. a simple walking habit can change absolutely everything.

This is a beautiful Portuguese edition of Phantom of the Opera from the Brazilian Pandorga Editora. It comes in a slipcase and includes a poster, bookmark, and Andre Castaigne postcard. It has amazing art by Rafaela Villela throughout, and a cool feature is that they have Erik's notes in a scratchy typeface.

big fan of the mirror bride even when she's silver but...she would not be silver, like, canonically speaking--erik's too much a freak okay he would sculpt a fake christine from scratch rather than play house with a generic looking mannequin. so here's mb for a black christine

i think this is also known as 'a list of things my perfect boy does' 🥰🤩🥰
A list of random out of context things that actually happen in Susan Kay's novel Phantom:
As a baby Erik's sobs sounded like a sirens call, which his mother was terrified of because it sounded sensual to her (this weird incestuous vibe does reoccur throughout!) and this is the only reason she breastfeed him
When she has this realisation she yeets him from her breast across the bed and then runs to the corner of the room to breakdown in for several hours
Erik manages to, through the use of ventriloquism and his magical sounding voice, hypnotise his mother into genuinely thinking a little Shepard boy figure is alive and that she must care for it like a baby. He later admits that he didn't mean to actually make her crazy
Erik has magical healing powers
At 15 years old is so good at masonry (he has been learning for two years) that he is put in charge of constructing a building instead of the several adults who have been working in masonry for like at least five times as longer
His mother genuinely suspects that when Erik was an infant he thought their dog was actually his mother, since she gave him more affection.
Erik makes a big dick joke in front of royalty
The Daroga does not like cats
Erik puts a little splint on a Lizard's leg at one point and has a whole room full of injured animals he is looking after
At one point in court the Shah's mother asks Erik about his virginity and implies she wants to take his (he is oblivious to this, everyone else in the room is not)
When Daroga asks Erik what he is planning on doing Erik whips out a tarot card to him in answer like a Disney villain and walks off into the night as it ominously reveals itself to be the death card
I am currently only halfway through reading this
Edit: part 2

a feel like the new generation of fanfic readers NEED to understand that clicking on a fic (interaction) does nothing. ao3 has no algorithm. your private discord discussions of fic do not reach the authors. if you do not actively engage with writers they will stop posting. this isn’t social media this is community.
