Summary:

Being cursed doesn't sound like the most fun activity. Yet ever the optimist, Dabi soon finds himself on a hiking trip to find a cure. Or at the very least, something else to do.

In other words: Dabi leaves the town, looks for a toothpicker and finds a new job.

Blue Jay

The blue jay, despite its name, has only either black or white feathers, and not blue plumage, though its feathers appear blue to the casual observer. Part of the Corvid family, the small blue jay shares the affinity of other birds in its family, such as magpies, for shiny objects. Since human activity has reduced the amount of forest available for the blue jay to nest in, this creature has become increasingly widespread in urban areas. The public may spot these birds searching the garbage on the lookout for shiny treasures.

“Hawks.”

He lifts his head, blinking at the absolutely done look Dabi has on his face. He smiles.

“You are covered in trash,” Dabi points out. “It cancels your charm.”

Hawks gasps. “You are trash!” Dabi rolls his eyes, but helps him out of the waste bin. “These are treasures.”

He sticks his hand on his pocket, and proudly  shows his findings to Dabi. The villain sighs, and grabs the empty candy wrappers, burning them in his hands. If he looks closely though, there’s three mismatched earrings and one peeble.

“You realize you can buy these in stores, right?” Dabi says, taking one of the earrings. It’s long, blue, and eventhough it does shines, it’s junk jewelley, the type his mother would never wear. “Better ones.”

Hawks’ mouth pinches at the sides, and he looks down, hands curling over his treasure before setting them carefully on his pockets again. “It’s not the same.”

Dabi sighs, and cups the birdhead’s face, taking his black earrings off and sliding the new in place. It’s too long for Hawks face, and too tacky. But he lights up, smiling wide and eyes trying to catch the sparkle as he shakes his head slightly.

Hi Neal!

I’ve been writing creatively for about six years now, and by other people’s standards, I’m pretty good at it. I’ve even won a couple awards. However, I hate looking at anything I’ve written that’s more than six months old. Every time, I take a mental red pen to my writing and I feel absolutely humiliated that I showed it to anyone in the first place. If I can see faults in my old work, that must mean I’m improving, but it makes it hard to want to show people new things if I know I’ll just be mortified by them later. Do you have any advice?

It’s a thing, yes. 

If it makes you feel better, there comes a point where you aren’t mortified by it any longer because you aren’t the person who made it any longer -- in the same way you can look at a painting you did as a kid, when you hadn’t quite figured out how to draw fingers, that would have mortified you six months later, when you’d got fingers down AND discovered that people look better with eyebrows, and just see it as a cool painting you did when you were a kid, and the fingers don’t bother you because that was how you did fingers back then, and actually there’s a freedom to the way you deployed colour that you kind of wish you had now...
