On July 25, the 300 meter long, 203130 dwt bulk carrier Wakashio ran aground three miles off Pointe D’esny, Mauritius. The Wakashio was on a return voyage to Tubarão, Brazil from Lianyungang, China. The bulk carrier was proceeding with just ballast, 3800 tons of bunker fuel oil and 20 crew on board. The vessel course would traverse the Indian Ocean to pass the capes of South Africa on to Brazil.
youtube
As the Wakashio approached the island of Mauritius, authorities attempted to alert the bulk carrier it was on the wrong course. Reports state the vessel had altered the standard course so the vessel could approach nearer to the coast. The course change was to allow the vessel to get a wifi signal while celebrating a crewmember’s birthday. During the celebration, the crew had no one attending the communications. Authorities attempted to contact the vessel for an hour until they finally got through. The master of the Wakashio insisted to Mauritius coast guard that the vessel’s course was safe.
youtube
Unfortunately, the Wakashio course drove the bulk carrier up on a reef along Mauritius southern coast. The bulk carrier was firmly aground at the stern while the bow was still floating free.  Fully exposed to the weather, the Wakashio began to substain damage over the next days. Several cracks appeared along the hull and the fuel tanks were ruptured. Bunker fuel began to leak out of the vessel and begun to wash ashore. Authorities had placed booms around the Wakashio, but were ineffective in containing the pollution. Authorities and local volunteers were able to remove some 150 metric tons of pollution off the beach. Experts estimate it will take several years to remove the majority of the pollution from the reef and shoreline.  Like the MS Olivia or the Rena which both ran aground and released a large amount of pollution, it may take decades before the entire environmental impact can be determined.
By August 6, the Wakashio had released some 1180 tons of fuel forming a 7 mile long oil slick.  The remaining fuel and oil on board the bulk carrier was transferred to small tankers by August 12. A few days later the vessel broke-in-two along the No. 8 cargo hold.  An additional 100 metric tons of lubricating oil was released. The bow section of the Wakashio is to be towed away and sunk in deep water.

The 59 meter long, 531 dwt fishing vessel Kokshaysk ran aground along the coast of Norway near Arnøya in Troms.  Authorities were alerted and found the Kokshaysk nearly high and dry. An inspection found a small oil leak, but the trawler’s hull was in good shape and no water ingress was found. Attempts to refloat the Kokshaysk will be done on the next high tide. Authorities are still investigating why the trawler ran ashore. Reports state there was good visibility and nice weather at the time of the incident. One report suspects the night watch had fallen asleep at the helm. No reports of injuries to the 35 crew on board the trawler.

The 58 meter long, 800 dwt fishing vessel Sur Este 709 caught fire while berthed in Montevideo, Uruguay. The fire started in the fish processing compartment and quickly intensified by the stored packing materials in the compartment. The crew Sur Este 709 was unable to contain the blaze and local fire fighters arrived on scene. Fire fighters tried to contain the fire, but the fire had now spread through most of the superstructure. Authorities evacuated the pier and nearby vessels from the possible dangers of the fire spreading and the toxic dense smoke emitting from the holds of the trawler.
youtube
A short time later tugs were requested to tow the trawler away from the docks.  Authorities feared there was a strong threat of explosion from ammonia cylinder tankers stored on board. The trawler was towed some 300 meters away from the piers to a nearby anchorage where tugs and fire boats continued fire fighting efforts through out the night.
https://shipwrecklog.com/log/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Sur-Este-709.mp4
The Sur Este 709 became so waterlogged that it capsized and partially sank on its port side. Authorities placed booms around the trawler to contain any pollution released. Reports state the fire has gutted the vessel and it is a constructive loss.  No reports of injuries.

On June 12, the ro-ro passenger ferry Dharma Rucitra 3 sank at Padang Bai, Bali. The Dharma Rucitra 3 had departed from Lembar, Lombok Island with passengers and vehicles and proceeded to Padang Bai. While the ferry berthed in Padang Bai, the vessel lost stability and developed a strong starboard list. Reports state the list resulted in vehicles shifting on the car deck of the Dharma Rucitra 3.  Lower decks of the ferry began to suffer water ingress and the vessel began to sink by the stern. The ferry’s pumps were unable to contain the flooding and the Dharma Rucitra 3 settled by the stern.
youtube
All 60 passengers on board were safely evacuated to shore. No reports of injuries. Authorities have placed booms around the vessel to contain any pollution released. All 32 vehicles on board the Dharma Rucitra 3 were still below deck when it sank.
youtube
Some news reports have stated the ferry may had suffered a leak in the bilge causing the flooding and instability.  Authorities have stated the vessel will be salvaged. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
