oh and you know what fucked with me more than the fresh corpses of people you know you didn’t miss by very long? More than the skeletons, long dead, left where they were when the bombs fell? Even more than the mannequins in weird places? More than the burned out of husks of the Scorched?

The bloody skeletons vaguely held together by whatever tendons haven’t been torn off. Someone or something tore the flesh from these bones, and rather recently. The bones are damp with blood. They are not so much evidence of where a person died, but where a person was processed and discarded.

Environmental storytelling is something Bethesda is very good at, and i was concerned that it’d be hard to keep that up with people wandering around… but that was. Something. That and like, the dude that was locked in a fridge and recorded himself screaming for help and eventually suffocating to death on audio. And the letter from the little boy about how he lost his parents, followed by a follow up written years later by the same boy accepting that his father abandoned him and didn’t actually die. 

It works very well to unsettle you and point out: Shit Has Gone South. 

Normally you find holotapes and no bodies, or dry dusty bones. Notes are on half working computers or probably on crumbling paper. Now, though, you know very well you walked in late to the suffering. Not even that long of late, either– a year? Months? Weeks? Some might have died days before you got there. 

You are rebuilding civilization on top of fresh graves. You are the ghost here. You are not the inheritor of the land, you are a scavenger, picking the corpse of what you knew.
