Mulching for Soil Health and Water Conservation
The sheen and bounty of Ramdeen’s crop never cease to amaze his fellow farmers. A matriculate, he has proved that good farming requires sensitivity towards eco-friendly farming techniques, a visionary approach, and a will for constant improvement, besides a decent education. Soil health and water conservation are his biggest ‘mantras’ for success.
Indian farmers certainly have a lot to learn from Ramdeen in terms of maintenance of soil health and water conservation techniques, of which mulching is the foremost. These techniques are integral to protective farming, which seems to be catching farmers’ attention given the increasing need for protecting their crops from increasingly erratic weather conditions and other threats.
Soil health is of paramount importance in protective agriculture. If the soil is not healthy, the crop will fail. Only a healthy tree can bear healthy fruit. But what is it that keeps the tree healthy? Obviously, the soil! The healthier the soil, the healthier the tree would be.
Ramdeen learned to keep his soil healthy by resorting to the protective farming practice of mulching through the use of a plastic mulch film, years ago. But what does it take to keep the soil healthy? The answer is simple — the right mulch to maintain the adequate ratio of nutrients and moisture content in the soil.
Mulching is good for enhancing soil health as it entails spreading a cover of organic mulch comprising cut grass, hay, shredded wood and leaves, compost with earthworms in it, straw, and stubble, as well as inorganic mulch as plastic mulch film, rubber mulches, and crushed stone.
What is mulching?
The process of preparing the soil for the purpose of cultivation is called mulching. It is an essential part of what has come to be known as protective farming, the aim of which is to protect the natural resources, including soil and water, used in agriculture, besides ensuring an abundant and healthy harvest of crops being grown on a piece of land.
What does the process of mulching entail?
The process of mulching entails overlaying the soil to be cultivated or under cultivation with a layer of nutritional and protective material called mulch.
In doing this, the farmer enriches the soil by adding earthworm enriched compost, fertilizer, or other nutrients and covering it up with hay, stubble, straw, shredded leaves, or chips of wood, all of which fall under the category of organic mulch, which has high nutritional value for the soil.
In some cases, the farmers also use crushed stone, a layer of rubber or plastic mulch film, these being the examples of inorganic mulch, which despite the lack of a nutritional value, play an essential role in mulching in that they help prevent soil erosion and reduce the rate of evaporation of water from the soil.
Both the organic and inorganic mulches are allelopathic in nature, which means that they do not allow weeds to grow in the periphery of the cultivated area. Also, they protect plants against pest attacks and keep the soil insulated and suitable for plant growth in different climates.
How is mulch laid?
A farmer cleans, weeds, stirs the soil, and waters the soil bed where the seeds have either been planted or are to be planted. He, then, adds fertilizers or compost to it and covers it up with a layer of mulch, which could either be organic or inorganic. This is how mulching is basically done.
Meanwhile, whether the mulch should be laid before or after planting the seeds continues to be a debatable issue. It all depends on the needs of the plants. Though in some cases mulching is done before planting the seeds, in others it is done after, depending on the nutritional needs of the plants one is growing.
There are some plants that thrive well when mulching is done after planting the seeds, there are others that need a layer of mulch in place prior to the planting of their seeds to protect them from birds, pests, and weeds.
How does mulching improve soil health?
Mulching is extremely important for soil health these days. Mulch covers the soil, to which fertilizer or compost has been added, and which has also been duly watered, with a protective layer.
This layer holds the duly watered soil in place and ensures that it does not get eroded along with the nutrients that have been added to it, due to excessive irrigation. It helps maintain the alkalinity of the soil, which allows the plant to get an adequate amount of nitrogen that it needs to grow.
a. Mulching and water conservation, what is the connection?
As mulch covers the soil, it helps keep it cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Since the layer of soil does not come in direct contact with the sun, the rate of evaporation of water from the soil is reduced, which helps maintain adequate moisture in the soil itself. This reduces the need to water the plant every now and then, and prevents the resultant wastage of water used for irrigation, thereby aiding water conservation to quite an extent.
b. Which mulch is the best for soil health?
Technically speaking, both organic and inorganic mulches are. Therefore, both can be used either in tandem or singularly, depending on the cultivation needs of the farmer and the requirements of the crop. The organic mulch that is added to the soil lends greater nourishment to it as it mixes up with it as it decomposes.
The inorganic one, like its organic cousin, is allelopathic in nature and protects plants from pests, but doesn’t have any nutritional value, although it aids the soil in retaining its intrinsic alimentary value for the plant.
Mulching is a science:
Even as most farmers still prefer the traditional, organic mulches, mulching has emerged as a science due to the scientific breakthroughs in agriculture. This scientific approach toward agriculture mandates precision in mulching, which is sometimes not possible with traditional mulches.
This is because most farmers find it hard to ascertain the ratio of nutrients and protective material to be used in laying out an effective mulch cover. This is where plastic mulch films come in handy. Factory-made plastic mulch films are not only easy to use and maintain but are also known to be as effective as traditional mulches.
These have a high aesthetic appeal too as they mingle well with their surroundings. Plastic mulch films work like any other traditional mulch and help the plants have a well-rounded growth.
So, if you care for your planet and its natural resources, we advise you to opt for mulching. We assure you that you will not regret the decision. Not only would it allow you to reap a rich harvest each year, but also keep your soil healthy, besides conserving water and helping you win acclaim for your concern for the environment.

The ripple effects of the global fertilizer crisis on India
If the redundancy of agricultural practices tires you no end, you are welcome to switch over to the most innovative practices like mulching that will not only reduce your time, effort and expenditure, but would also grant you access to mulching benefits of professional and financial kind.
What is Mulching?
The application of a protective and nourishing layer of organic or inorganic cover, known as mulch, is called mulching. Naturally available in the form of organic mulches, mulch covers include layers of shredded wood, leaves, straw, stubble, compost and grass clippings, which lend nourishment to the plant as they decompose.
Organic mulches are nowadays also being produced in factories dealing in the production of state-of-the-art agricultural supplies. A farmer could also use inorganic mulches including plastic films, rubber sheets and gravel that lend weed protection and beauty to the venue where they are used.
In simple terms, Mulching is the answer of scientific advancements in the field of agriculture to the global fertilizer crisis.
How? Well, mulching enhances the productivity quotient of the fertilizers mixed in the soil by preventing soil erosion and the resultant leaching of essential nutrients during irrigation.
Crops need adequate quantities of nitrogen for their healthy growth. Nitrogen is naturally available in the soil, but in a very limited quantity. This necessitates the use of fertilizers to boost the productivity of the soil.
However, rampant irrigation of cultivated soil and various natural calamities often lead to soil erosion thereby resulting in loss of essential nutrients in the soil and cause damage to the plants.
We’re sure that by this time you would be interested in the augmentative properties of mulch with respect to fertilizers and pesticides.
Mulching ensures that the soil stays in place and prevents it from being eroded come what may, thereby helping it retain the nutrients added to it in the form of fertilizers and compost.
Mulching reduces evaporation of water and essential nutrients from the soil, thereby maintaining adequate moisture in the soil and minimizing the need for irrigation and the resultant soil erosion and washing away of nutrients added through the administration of fertilizers.
As it packs the soil tight, the fertilizer added to the soil covered by mulch does not get washed away.
Its allelopathic qualities prevent weeds from growing near the crops being cultivated, which boosts the ability of the pesticides to control pests.
Mulching benefits: While only a farmer can give a detailed account of the myriad mulching benefits these mainly include increased production of healthy crops, high quality of agricultural produce, good retail price of the crops for the farmers.
