Steve: went back to the past leaving Bucky and all his new friends behind, lived out his life with Peggy and is an old man now who’s given up the mantel of Captain America

Tony: Married Pepper, had a kid, got to build his farm and retire to it (All of which was skipped over and we didn’t even get to see) only to end up pulled back into the fight and dying to save the world

Marvel: look, they both have happy endings!!

Does it ever torment you that Tony actually sways toward Steve here, and if Steve had realized that Tony would welcome it, and if Pepper hadn’t run up just then, maybe, just maybe, Steve would have hugged Tony? Can you picture that hug where they both close their eyes and sag against each other in sweet relief, and Steve’s worried about how frail Tony feels in his arms, and Tony just revels in how warm and solid Steve is as Steve takes his weight?

steve finding out that there is a level of concentration that tony gets into when he’s working where he will make noises like he’s listening but he genuinely cannot hear what you’re saying he just tunes it all out and won’t remember what you said to him afterwards

steve getting into the habit of saying things to tony he wouldn’t usually say while tony is in this state, like sex stuff he wants to try but doesn’t know how to ask tony for, or how he loves how disgruntled by everything tony is after just waking up, and how he gets kind of annoyed when tony just throws money around like it’s nothing, and at one point he says how he really wants to marry tony but he’s scared tony will say no if he asks

what steve doesn’t know is that tony found out about this whole thing years ago and now has jarvis play back the tapes of when he gets in that state so he can hear what steve says

and he listens to this particular tape and that’s how tony gets up the courage to propose

sometime, decades later, tony lets slip that he has jarvis play back the tapes of steve telling him things when he zones out and steve stares before blurting “oh god you heard ALL OF IT DAMNIT TONY I HAVE BEEN DOING THAT FOR FOUR DECADES EVERYTHING MAKES SO MUCH SENSE NOW”
