i've been thinking about these two doofuses a lot recently so woe, actual character references be upon ye.

see i told you you'd never be able to guess what those wips were for.

ANYWAYS, so basically i remembered that Mel existed around a week ago (i'm so sorry for forgetting about you my son 😔) and figured 'hey why don't i use him in the oc stuff i'm currently doing? that would be fun.' and that's true, it WOULD be fun.

the only issue is i had no idea how to go about doing that, since he doesn't exactly fit where he had been before in previous oc stuff (does this make any sense at all? whatever it doesn't really matter). so i did some brainstorming, and made a whole doodle canvas to get ideas out (which is the context behind the 'my son needs a home' image) and LONG STORY SHORT:

i REALLY liked these ones. so this is the idea i went with.

now you may be thinking: 'ok but who the hell is Aiko.' good question! Aiko is a character that i've had sitting around as a concept for years, and only finally actually designed/named last march (...or 2 marches ago??? march 2024) annnnnd then proceeded to do fuck all with. it wasn't like i didn't have ideas, honestly i've had her personality and interests and stuff nailed down from day 1, but like. idk i just never got to do much with her.

however, while thinking of characters that could be fun to pair with mel, i realized that 'oh. oh they're actually really similar huh. like both are very lonely and kinda pathetic and one thing away from snapping but like in a sad literally-about-to-cry way and kinda have trust issues.

yeah i think they'd have a funny dynamic.'

and then the top-right doodle was made and it fully sold me on the idea lmao

so yeah. basically at some point Mel gets onto Aiko's computer somehow, she finds out and ends up being way more chill about the uhhhh Sentient (alleged) Doomsday Virus that is now living in her laptop than she probably should be, but like. she feels REALLY bad for him. and is also SO desperate for literally anyone to talk to that isn't her discord friends who really just keep her around as a punching bag, which she is aware of, but she has LITERALLY NO ONE ELSE so she just kinda takes it and tells herself 'no it's fine, i'm just being paranoid, they don't hate me the bullying is just as a joke haha :]'

so needless to say. she's desperate.

actually i should probably explain Mel's whole deal too huh.

ok so Mel (full name Mel O. Ware) is a little guy, just a small fella, a poor little meow meow even, who just so happens to be a computer virus that was created with the intention of making a Y2K scale event actually happen. but instead of being able to do literally anything malicious he instead has Sentience (or sapience, or whatever the technically correct term is. he's a person with a consciousness and his own thoughts and feelings) and also needs glasses to see. because yeah sure that makes sense as something you could accidentally program, why not.

there is an answer to the question of 'who made him', but the character who did is uhh Not Mine and is a plot device, not a character so it actually doesn't really matter (if you're reading this: hi ceph :] i miss ned :[)

ANYWAYS he also has the ability to bring things into/take things out of the computer (not including himself, otherwise he'd have a LOT less problems) because. yes. and he uses this ability to... run an online business.

yup. he is exactly as much of a bulliable dweeb (affectionate) as he looks.

so he does that for a few years, hopping from computer to computer to escape Being Actually Killed By Antiviruses until at some point, someone puts an antivirus on the post office's computer, and uhhh wow there goes his only way to ship things out.

guess he's not doing THAT anymore.

so yeah he's basically just been. running for his life the entirety of his life. and understandably, this has not been too good for his mental health (y'know, on top of already being labeled a complete failure for not being able to do the one thing he was created to do). to quote myself from the 3rd of october 2021 when i was getting down the original concepts for Mel:

there's a lot of good Mel content back on the ol' ask blog. and also catboy maid mel. yes that exists, and no i will not be showing it.

...anyways did i mention that he has a crippling fear of death? because he has a crippling fear of death. fun!!!

but yeah, that's basically his whole schtick. have some doodles of him that were on the same canvas as the aiko doodles from earlier that i also really liked

...i forget if i was actually going anywhere with this whole info dump ramble thing. i'm kinda just saying shit about these two at this point lmao

oh yeah. so they become friends, because they're both just super lonely and desperate, and it's great for a while! it's nice! the fact that her only friend is the tiny man living in her computer is a bit of a hit to Aiko's already low self esteem, but also who cares about that, he's nice and actually treats her like a friend.

and then nothing bad happens.

there is no morally ambiguous supernatural investigation organization that discovers Mel's existence and wants to find him so they can figure out why he's Like That (read: a person).

that would never happen.

anyways i like them both a lot and put way too much effort into this. but like. they're both characters that i've been thinking about a lot due to certain similarities they have to a certain other character i've been thinking about a WHOLE lot, so y'know. classic shook being extra as hell because the brain worms demanded it.
