From my understanding, in the context of the Spiral specifically (as definitions vary across fantasy works), it's a rectangle-square situation. All drakes are dragons---Dragonspyre is a "world of dragons," after all, so it would be weird if drakes and Draconians weren't considered dragons. But not all dragons are drakes, just as not all dragons are Draconians.

Dragon seems to refer to any fantasy lizard in the Spiral, a nice umbrella term, anything from the Sky Dragons in Subata Skyway, to Dragon Prince, to Dragon King, to the wyrms in Avalon, to the Draconians and the battle drakes and the Dragon Titan itself. Drakes are a specific subset of dragon that may be paired with a human dragonrider. They are sapient but quadrupedal and not anthropomorphized. This distinguishes them from characters like Zarathax and Dragon Prince, who aren't drakes because they stand on two legs and wear clothes---but they're still dragons.

Dragon King and the Sky Dragons aren't drakes either because they have the wrong limb count. Drakes are shown to all have four legs and a pair of wings. Dragon King and any Sky Dragons we run into have a long, slender body and a pair of arms.

Are drakes and dragons different things or is this a case of having multiple names for the same thing?
