As a black woman. A woman of color. Writer. Artist. Creative. My work is not a literary zoo. For you to come observe. learn. about the animals Or a space to publicly. loudly. dominantly. flog your privileges. Nor is it A warm. indiscriminate. cavernous. lap to lay in. It is a boundary. I am a boundary. - unmammy, nayyirah waheed

Sometimes I can be in a room full of people and still feel very alone. I can yearn for interaction, get it, but still feel unfulfilled. Even in all of this, I still see the value in being understood by people you love and people with similar experiences as you. @talk_yana is an online platform that created space for people to talk openly about their mental health struggles. On the last day of #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, remember that You Are Not Alone. @talk_yana is spearheaded by @clevan_ and as a man of color, a group too often left behind in the mental health discussion, he is sharing his journey boldly. If you're looking for a space to write, share, connect with other around mental wellness, check out @talk_yana [image via @abbeymag]

Truthfully. It should never have been a hashtag. Don't get me wrong. I get it. Community and visual representation matter, especially when people around you can't or won't support you. Social media is the tool. But first and foremost - before all of that - it should have been difficult conversations with our mothers, daughters and sons. Quiet contemplation in the mirror. Poetry and media criticism. Tears on the shoulder of a best friend. Diary entries. Solo vacations. Meditation. Critical thought and public discussion. Policy and social change. Instead of doing the work first, its all before and after pictures, screenshots, misquotes, cliques, capsule collections, commodification, misrepresentation, a contest, a way to stand-out and fit-in. But this is where we are now. So we have to deal with it. What is the future of #bodypositivity? Where do we go from here? #thoughtscaughtinmyfro (at Houston, Texas)

#denimday TRIGGER WARNING: SEXUAL ASSAULT.....................……........................................................For the past 18 years, Peace Over Violence has run its Denim Day campaign on a Wednesday in April in honor of Sexual Violence Awareness Month. The campaign was originally triggered by a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Read more on ThoughtsCaughtInMyFro.Com #LINKINBIO

Now on the blog, the revival of my series on body-image and cultural relativism: "WOW, typing up that last paragraph made me realize that my body positivity isn't always as inclusive as I thought. I realize that I focus on size a lot, when size is not the only issue that exists within the body positive community. That in and of itself is something that I need to be mindful of. Disabilities, colorism, and body dysmorphia are all body posi issues that need to be addressed and sizeism cannot be the only focus. I feel like while tying this I got a huge slap in the face from reality. I would definitely say that body shaming and erasure is extended way past just sizeism and that body positivity is an umbrella term that should be extended to all of these areas and more, but in our culture it has become easy to focus on one aspect and believe that you are doing a good public service. If you ignore the issues of other only to focus on the one that suits you or affects you the most, that's as bad as white feminism." READ MORE on thoughtscaughtinmyfro.com

The new site will feature a curated playlist each week, released on Sunday! Check out my first one at the link in my bio. You can follow each playlist as songs get added to them 🤳🏾 I'm also looking for guest curators, so if making playlists is yo thang, let me know. It's my favorite way to discover and share new artists, and we all could use a soundtrack for the week! All music (including instrumental) welcome as long as it doesn't include any kind of hate speech.

I did not take any women studies or gender studies courses while in college and as I get older, I'm starting to regret that. I really do value the work theorists put into examining the issues that people like you and me might throw a post up about in social media and keep it pushing. So I'm trying to make more of an effort to spend some real time exploring the theoretical issues around the idea of body, agency, gender, sex and race. I'm not saying you can't come up with your own opinions about these things without the backing of a college professor, but we do need to invest more time in exploring ideas beyond re blogging a Tumblr post someone from somewhere else. I'm rambling, but my pony is PLEASE POINT ME TOWARDS SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE THEORISTS AND AUTHORS. Because I want to read them. // photo is of the back of a Judith Butler book titled "Bodies That Matter".
