Togata was unambiguously the driving force behind the first half of Fire Punch but I feel as if his transness was heavily underutilized when it came to grounding the themes of the story. Togata’s whole thing is that he’s a man, but due to his regeneration ability is unable to get gender affirmation surgery and present as one. in order to cope, he lives vicariously through the cool, masculine characters in movies and picks Agni for the main character in his movie specifically because he intends to achieve cathartic affirmation through him. It’s more or less implied that the reason why he doesn’t go through half-way measures like wearing a binder and whatnot is because he believes that he wouldn’t be embodying the ideal version of himself that he wishes people to see, so he settles for shocking people by engaging in gender atypical behaviors (like ultraviolence and talking about jerking off…it’s important to note that the world of Fire Punch is deeply misogynistic so women aren’t typically allowed to act like this) in order to muscle people who would otherwise force him into the role of a demure woman. true to his fixation on movies, he is playing a character. and the more effective he is at playing one, the less people can see and hurt the real him.

When Togata talks to Agni about his dysmorphia, Agni asks him if he would prefer being referred to as a “big brother” as opposed to a big sister. Togata sighs and tells him that “big sister” is fine, and that he hates that Agni even has to ask that – both due to the fact that it means he’s not playing his role as a sly woman correctly and that it’s like Agni is contending with a new thing he’s learned about Togata as opposed to seeing Togata as how he wants to be seen. This is probably the most human arc in this whole series and the least flowery depiction of the themes of what it means to be authentic when faced with limitations. When Togata dies and Agni lives with Judah, it does not feel like it’s carrying the torch of what was previously set up at all as much as it is a different approach to the subject altogether – which would have been interesting if the series didn’t have a habit of starting a thread then dropping it.

The main takeaway from fire punch

It’s going to take me a while to process this story, but one thing managed to make it past the miasma that is my brain currently

I feel like I’m victim blaming, but this line right here feels like the main takeaway in this story. Agni at multiple points in the story could just move on, try to build a life again. I know that’s a tall order since he spent 8+ years in fucking agony. Everyone tells him to live, that they want him to be happy, and he just refuses to do it. Even Sun left him alone for 10 years because he wanted Agni to be happy.

There are many themes surrounding perception that I think influences Agni. He’s been Agni, Luna’s brother, firewood, inhuman, fire punch, a god, and a devil. Agni doesn’t know who he is and he only exists according to others’ views. In the end, Agni is no longer himself. It’s been eons and all that’s left is him and Luna/Juddah. He has to completely wipe the slate and even then…

I don’t know what precisely Fujimoto was going for, but this story is meaningful. It’s a very cynical analysis of using religion to cope, the desperation of people, our desires to create hierarchies to exert control, and a lot else. Some aspects are a little rough around the edges, but I do think it has better pacing than Chainsaw Man. Though the latter is more refined in characterization.

Also, don’t read this story if themes of SA, CSA, religious zealotry trigger you. I’m not easily triggered but this manga made me more depressed.
