Shot blasting is a process of shooting a high-pressure stream of abrasive media (also known as shots or blasting material) against the blasting surface of a metal piece or part.

Shot Blasting is two types: Wheel Blasting & Air Blasting

Wheel blasting is directly converts electric energy into kinetic energy by rotating a Blast wheel. The capacity of each blast wheel goes from approx 60 kg per minute up to 1300 kg per min. With these large amounts of high velocity shots, shot blast machines are used where big parts or large parts have to be derusted, descaled, deburred and cleaned in some form. The method of conveying of the components to be blasted will be defining the type of equipments.

Air blasting machines can take the form of a blasting cabinet, the blast shots is pneumatically accelerated by compressed air and projected by sandblasting nozzles onto the component. For special applications an abrasives + water mix can be used, this is called wet blasting machines.

In air and wet blast the shotblast nozzles can be installed in fixed positions or can be operated by manually or by automatic nozzle accumulators. The blasting task defines the choice of the blasting media; in mostly case any type of dry or free running abrasive media can be used.

SAND BLASTING

Sandblasting can be defined as one of the effective methods with which a surface can be shaped, cleaned and smoothened and all foreign material is removed. It can be stationary or portable in nature. Stationary sand blasting is done in cabinets or booths whereas portable sand blasting is done in portable sand blasters, hopped blasters. Thus it is also known as portable abrasive blasting, portable shot blasting, and portable grit blasting. It can be related to sandpaper for their similar effects. The material receives a completely new look and a better finish. All nooks and corners get completely clean. This method involves air blasting whereby very small material pieces are shot at a very high pressure in order to etch or clean or to smooth them. Surfaces are typically metal, glass, brick or even wood.

Air compressor + selected abrasive (blasting sand) + blast pot + appropriate nozzle + on/off control + blast surface = high-speed erosion (removal of dust particles from the blast surface.)

PORTABLE SAND BLASTING MACHINES

Portable sand blasting machines or mobile sand blasters are the machines which can be movable from one place to another easily. Sand blasting is the operation of forcibly propelling a stream of abrasive material (blasting sand) against a surface under high pressure to smooth a rough surface, roughen a smooth surface or to remove the surface materials. Sand used to be the most commonly used material, but since the lung disease are caused by extended inhalation of the dust created by sand, other materials are now used in its place (such as copper slag, steel grit, baking soda, glass beads, dry ice and walnut shells). 

To avoid such major diseases we can use safety devices such as air blaster helmets, operators’ suits, hand gloves, gum boots.

One thing you should never sandblast in portable abrasive sand blasting machine other than yourself is sheet metal. This will twist regardless of pressure. The common misunderstanding is that heat is warping the sheet metal. If the blast media is harder than the metal blasted, material is removed leaving a texture. This stretches the blasted side of metal. Use sanding methods for flat panels, or use a softer abrasive like Walnut shell or plastic media.
