âOkay, be honest-â Chris let out a sigh before opening the box for the other to see. The necklace inside sparkled just when the light hit. Revealing one of the Valentine gifts Chris had bought for Noami. â-is this too much? Do you think Naomi already has something like this?â
Eyebrow arches and a sharp whistle leaves their lips, hand lifting to run fingers through their hair. âThat -- is awesome first of all,â Nix murmured as they leaned back against the bar behind them. âI donât think she has anything like that. Thatâs one hell of a necklace.â

dimitri appreciated their honesty. he knew how easy it was to tell someone what they wanted to hear. so, he appreciated their honesty beyond words. âthank you for being honest,â he murmured truthfully, fearing that his sincerity wouldnât be heard through his words. âmaybe i should just lay it all out. even if it doesnât make any sense.â he mused gently.Â
nix nodded, a small smile on their lips. âcourse. itâs easy to just spout what you think someone needs to hear. truth works jsut as well,â they answered quietly. they could tell how sincere dimitri was being and it made their heart twist just a little in sympathy for them. âdonât feel like you have to, but if you want an outside ear iâm always around.âÂ

âpencil dick?â jenna repeated to him with wide eyes, attempting to hold back laughter but that proved to soon fail. âoh my god.â her head shook for a moment before she looked around the bar. âthatâs not that shitty if you think about it though, because he was doing a shitty thing so he sorta-in a way-deserved it. you know? itâs like logic.â
a smile twitched at the corner of nixâs lips as she laughed, a shrug lifting their shoulders. âyeah it was hilarious,â they said with a grin. âpeople donât know how to take no for answer. the number of times iâve had to tell people theyâre not my type is --- obnoxious.â they poured jenna another drink before pouring one for themself. âtrust me. i can be an ass when i need to be. comes with the job.â

eyebrows raised subtly, he took another swig of what was now probably his fifth round. â â this an intervention? at least let me get to a respectable level of drunk first.â
nix made a face and shook their head with a roll of his eyes. âno. no god no. just sayinâ. thereâs usually a reason.â a shrug lifted their shoulders as they poured a drink for another patron, watching pete out of the corner of their eye. âso there a reason? or you just hate people?â

The majority of my work has been in television, in film, and on a podcast. As amazing as those platforms and mediums are, there is something about all three that live in the ether. Thereâs a forever quality about those platforms that is much less tangible than a book that you can hold in your hand. In that moment when I had it, I knew people all over the world were going to have that same feeling holding my book â holding any book really â but the fact that I could put something into the world like this, that I created from my spirit, is just so special.

dimitri surprised even himself by being so open about his own frustrations when it came to communication. normally he just kept quiet, figuring that everyone was better off not hearing about his own problems. he sighed softly, hoping that they were right. that was the only hope dimitri had at this point. ââ and if it never comes?â
nix chewed their bottom lip for a long moment, hand lifting to run fingers through their hair. âi mean --- sometimes it doesnât,â they answered quietly. âi have some shit i still canât talk about. but thatâs not good. mental health wise i mean. bottling it up just makes it worse when it all eventually explodes. thereâs no rush though. take your time.â

now that answer had jenna leaning even further over her seat. ââkay so what is the most shitty thing youâve had to say?â picking up the shot between two fingers, the brunette looked them over for a moment before her head tilted. âwhat? am i doing this alone?â
nix frowned for a moment, a shrug lifting their shoulders as they tried to think. âi mean it depends on the situation. i had to tell a guy who wouldnât stop hitting on this girl that no one wanted to touch his pencil dick. that was a fun one.â

ârelaxing,â lina answered, resting her palm flat on the countertop. pursing her lips to one side, she considered the answer. she hadnât been there too long, but there was no sense in denying how awkward she felt. after tapping her index finger twice, she continued, âi mean, supposedly relaxing. bossâs orders after she caught me stressing over seed packetsâ but Iâm kind of doing an awful job.â
âsometimes being forced to relax makes it harder to relax,â they answered, chewing on their lower lip before they leaned against the bar. âit adds this crazy pressure to it and all of a sudden RELAXING is a chore.â they got it. it was part of the reason they spent so much time at work. âwhat do you normally like to do to relax?â

their question brought jenna to burst into laughter before her lips pressed into a smile as her head nodded at them. âokay, okay, you got me there. you make all your customers feel like shit or am i just the lucky one today?âÂ
a shrug lifted nixâs shoulders as they moved to pour her another shot. âhoney thatâs literally the LEAST shitty thing iâve had to say to a customer. people have no sense of boundaries,â they said with a shake of their head.

dimitri took a moment to consider their words. he wasnât completely opposed to the idea, he just wasnât sure how it would work for himself. âhow can i talk about it â if i donât even know what to say?â dimitri let out with a slight shake of his head.Â
nix was quiet for a moment, taking the time to carefully pick their words. dimitri made a valid point. it was hard to talk about something you didnât know how to put into words. âi think, and this is just my opinion, youâll know what to say when the time is right,â they answered slowly. âit doesnât have to be right away. it probably WONâT be right away. youâll know when, and who and what to say.â

her own glass hit the bartop rather roughly and on cue, jenna perked up on the stool to lean closer towards them. âisnât it sorta bold of you to assume iâm not waiting for anyone?âÂ
a shrug lifted nixâs shoulders as they leaned forward to look at jenna. âfair enough. how long are you gonna wait for your âdateâ before you realize theyâre not coming?â

dimitri raised a brow at their response, it was a first to hear and yes and a no. dimitri huffed gently after he heard the alternative, his grip on the glass in his hand tightening. âtalking isnât the most appealing option.â ever since everything had happened, it never had been. talking was⌠the most difficult thing for dimitri more often than not. maybe drinking was the best option he had here. he could forget. for just a little while.
they nodded, pausing only for a moment to pour someone else a drink. they could tell something was on dimitriâs mind, but it wasnât in their personality to push. they knew what this was like, having something youâd rather forget, even if it was just for the short term. âi get it. just --- before it gets too much you should talk. before it starts eating you up inside. from personal experience.â

âOof, I feel ya.â Okay, thatâs a lie- but to the eyes of everyone else, Holly Benson was single. While their reply wasnât exactly what she was hoping for, she continued to smile and be upbeat. âI do see your point, yes. But, itâs so much more than that. Itâs about reminding us to love and celebrate our loved ones: our partners, our friends, our families, our precious furbabies. To even remember to love ourselves, which can be hard at times. Sure, people like to focus on the romantic aspect; But, thereâs so many other things to love and to remind ourselves that itâs okay to show our love for these people in our lives. Itâs about reminding us not to take those we love for granted. And, okay, the inventory and candy and stuff is pretty neat, too. Thatâs a bonus.â
Another shrug lifted Nixâs shoulders, teeth moving to chew at their bottom lip for a long moment. âI mean I get that. I understand why people enjoy the holiday. I just --- celebrating the people you love and cherish is something you should do every day. The fact that a whole holiday was invented to do something that should happen naturally is bizarre to me.â Maybe it was the fact that they hadnât had someone to SHARE the holiday with in a long time. âThe half price candy the next day is killer though.â

It was hard not to watch every one of Nixonâs motions as they tried to balance work with conversation, for people like the pair of them it came with an eerie ease but they still admired it nonetheless. âYouâre complimenting me, again. Is that cuz you gotta live with me?â Freddie joked, trying not to get caught up on the warm feelings that replaced some of their upset. Being here wasnât such a bad idea after all.Â
An incredulous look crossed their face as the conversation progressed, shaking their head and placing their hands on the edge of the bar, âOh no no! Was just a thing I thought was going well.. but I was wrong! No kicking ass, youâre working!!â
A soft laugh left Nix as their cheeks warmed, a light blush passing over them. âNo. I compliment you cuz itâs the truth. Also I have to live with you so ya know anything to make THAT easier.â Their tone is light, the statement an obvious joke as they lean back against the bar in front of Freddie.Â
âYou sure? Cuz I can kick ass if you need me to.â A hand reached out hesitantly, giving Freddieâs own a light squeeze before pulling back. âSo wait. If youâre not working tonight why come here? You miss this face that much?â

Freddie knew how odd it seemed to divert the conversation but the mere thought of airing their dirty laundry out in such a public place unsettled them. But of all the people that would understand, they hoped it would be someone they spent quite a bit of time with. âCanât help but think thereâs somethinâ wrong with me.. I dunno..â they answered, trying to keep everything behind a wall, âI feel like maybe.. if itâs not that then Iâm coming on too strong..â
Nix made a face as they thought for a moment, arms folding to rest on the bar in front of them. A shrug lifted their shoulders as they straightened up to mix a drink for another patron. âI mean...sometimes you have a lot of energy. I donât know if everyone is ready for that. Anyone who gets to know you will see how great you are though.â They paused long enough to pass the person their drink and take their money before turning back to Freddie. âWhy? Whoâs ass am I kicking?âÂ

Maybe it wasnât such a good idea to divulge the gory details, in hindsight Nixon was the last person that they wanted knowing about anything unsavoury. Being roommates had hardly afforded either of them privacy, so they didnât want to overstep the mark, a diversion seemed like the best thing. âPersonal opinion totally allowed here⌠would you say I was a bad person?â Freddie was reaching, hoping for some words that would stop them from feeling so awful, but given how their luck was running it seemed a fair question to ask.
A frown immediately crossed Nixâs face at Freddieâs question. Well that seemed to come out of nowhere. Theyâd been roommates and coworkers for a little while, and they thought they had a pretty good handle on Freddie as a result. âNo. Youâre not a bad person. Not from what I can tell,â they answered. âWhy? I mean it seems a little RANDOM ya know?â
