"THIS WAS NEVER MEANT TO WORK OUT, YOU KNOW."
Vera froze at his words, hand hovering over the doorknob she was about to twist open before he spoke. The heavy ache in her chest quickly draining and instead her heart surged with anger. Slowly, she turned around and narrowed her eyes at Soren.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” She questioned him through gritted teeth.
“You know what it means,” he responded solemnly. He stood tall, looking Vera straight in the eye and at first, he almost had her fooled. But his strong facade quickly fell when he broke eye contact and looked down in clear remorse of his earlier words.
“Well clearly I don’t, if I did, why would I be asking?” The blonde snapped in annoyance. She dropped her bag on the floor and slowly approached Soren, her arms crossed defensively across her chest. “Tell me, Soren.”
“No,” he shook his head, “forget I said anything. Just go. Please.” Vera’s anger only flared further. Now he was shooing her away? The male turned away from her, eyes cast downward at an attempt to avoid eye contact, but Vera was adamant. She tilted her head to meet his gaze and with a stony glare, she repeated herself.
“Tell. Me.” Looking up to finally face her, Soren studied her features for a moment. Was this it? The last time he’d ever be able to see her face this close up? Telling her would only make things worse, he knew that but maybe if it got her to stay longer.. he didn’t even need to think about it. Once again he had stupidly let his heart make the decision for him.
“I- you know, okay? It’s just.. you were with Lukas first, then Roman and I- I should’ve hated you. I should’ve stayed away. I shouldn’t have let myself-” Soren paused as he looked at Vera, his eyes wide and distraught. “I shouldn’t have let myself fallen in love with you like that,” he finished exasperatedly. “I knew this could never work out. It was just.. too good to be true,” Soren muttered bitterly, looking away. Vera furrowed her brows in confusion.
“Soren, you couldn’t have known-” .
“But I did!” He exclaimed angrily. “Before we even started dating, you always had your issues with relationships and I had mine. Look at us, Vera, we are the epitome of dysfunctional. I mean if you couldn’t love Lukas, of all people how could you-?” Soren’s voice faltered at the question and his shoulders slumped as he looked back at Vera. Both their eyes were moist and red around the edges as they stared at each other. Vera’s bottom lip quivered and she gave a slight shake of her head before giving Soren a strong smack across the cheek.
“I did, Soren. More than anyone I had before. Don’t disrespect me by ever doubting that.” She stated icily. Still stunned, he held a hand up to the stinging spot on his cheek, and the male simply looked at her. Tired and dejected, he hung his head and said no more as Vera made her way to the door for the second time that day.
