I will also explain that how you can change the DNS on your computer and router as well.  There are various of using these free public DNS servers, on that I will be discussing later. In previous article I had discussed about what is DNS and what is DNS Hijacking. But this article is related to DNS so I will tell you about DNS in short.

What is DNS?

DNS stands for Domain Name System. Every website on the internet has unique IP address and the internet fully relies on DNS. DNS is like a Phone book. Each website has unique IP address, but remembering those numbers is impossible. IP address is consisting of numbers such as 172.20.1.1 which give the domain a unique identification. How You Can Change DNS On Your Computer?

On Windows operating system, it is very easy to change the DNS servers. Right now, I’m using windows 10. So, I will explain according to that. Go to the Control Panel.

Click on Network & Sharing Center

    In the left corner, click on Change Adapter Setting.

  There you will see Network Connections.

If you are using Internet via WI-Fi, then that will be active and if you are using Internet via Ethernet cable, then that will be active. Right Click on the network that you are using and click on Properties.   Then, Double click on “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)”

  Tick on “Use the following DNS server address” and enter the DNS server you want to use.

Click OK to save all settings and now your DNS is switched to Google Public DNS. This is how you can enter any third-party DNS server.  

How To Setup Third-Party DNS Server On Your Router?

This can be quite difficult because not all of use same router so settings might be different for different routers. Right now, I’m using Digisol router. If you are using same router, you can just log in in to your router’s setting. Go to Dashboard >> Service.

Internet fully relies on DNS. The DNS stands for Domain Name System. Each and every website on the internet has an IP address, but remembering those numbers is quite difficult for all of us. Hackers do this attack either to steal your sensitive information or to generate clicks on their ads. Hackers use malware or malicious software to override your computer’s TCP/IP settings that include DNS settings. This attack is done by the use of malicious software or by changing the settings of the server. Once the attacker performing the DNS Hijacking have control of the DNS, they can use it to direct traffic to different sites. DNS Hijacking involves infecting computers with DNS Trojan attacks or Malwares. This attack also hacks certain websites and change their DNS addresses so that visitors from these websites end up visiting completely different destination.

How Does DNS Hijacking Works?

Every website is hosted somewhere on server and each of this server has its own IP address which corresponds to its location. It means, if a website is located on a particular server, then it will have a unique IP address. If you enter that particular IP address into address bar of your browser, you will be taken to that desire website. But it is impossible to remember IP address of every website. That is where DNS comes into picture, which translate IP address into alphanumeric domain name. domain names are easy to remember. When you try to opening Facebook.com, DNS does its job and matches this domain name with its IP address and then the desire website is presented to you. When your computer’s DNS setting is hijacked, you probably end up visiting completely different websites that you have not requested. When your PC get infected by DNS Hijacking, hacker succeeds in changing your PC’s DNS settings and it will no longer have the ability to correctly make the connection between a domain name and its original IP address. Which means you will be directed to the fake websites.

Now you know how does DNS Hijacking takes place, it is also important to know the reasons behind DNS Hijacking is used. ISP Hijacking Most of ISP’s use this technique. You won’t be able to access the websites that you want to open, because they will redirected you to collection of fake sites with ads. Hijacked DNS Can Be Used For Phishing Phishing means designing fake website to steal your sensitive information such as username, passwords, emails, credit card details etc. For example, hackers might create a fake webpage that exactly look like your Facebook login page. When they hijack your DNS, they redirect you to their fake site instead of real Facebook login page. You don’t know anything and you enter your login credentials and hit enter. The moment victim opens the Two Factor Authentication code into the fake page, the user is redirected to the Google Drive document just like it would in a normal case. What Happens At Hacker’s Side: when you are logged into your Gmail account and click on Google Drive link, you wouldn’t be asked for logging in as you are logged in already. So, the Google Drive is fake page created by the hacker to ask for victim’s login details. The victim put his login credentials on behalf of the hacker, and the Authentication code that victim would enter would also be for the hacker to login into victim’s Gmail account. If victim is not alert, something terrible would be happen to his account.

Google has now extended the Interpreter mode on its Assistant to smart speakers and other third-party devices. This “Interpreter” mode will help users to have real-time conversation with their devices and can also translate them into other languages.
