Shu-Jung CHAO is an interdisciplinary artist. Her works focus on the ideas behind fundamental human experiences such as memory, travelling/time travel, culture/language and aspects of consciousness, as well as “globalization” issues in the public sphere. Shu-Jung grew up in Taipei, Taiwan. After long residence in France, she evolved a lifetime ambition to the video, new media, transdisciplinary media and contemporary art. In 2009, Shu-Jung graduated from Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Art de Bourges with a Master’s degree in Fine Arts. In 2011-12, she participated in the Post-graduate programme at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratif de Paris. Her works can be found in various prestigious video art festivals around the world and she is the only Taiwanese artist whose work had been thrice selected to be aired on ARTE Video Night (2014, 2013, 2011). Following the ARTE airing, CHAO went on to exhibit her works at the Cinémathèque de Toulouse in France, the La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris, and the Palais de Tokyo, also in Paris. Her 2017 solo exhibit was reported by Japanese broadcasters, NHK and RSK. In 2011, CHAO was received the Taiwan’s Emerging Artists award from the Ministry of Culture (Made in Taiwan). Many of her works have been selected by the NTMOFA Collection – Young Artists and the MOC ArtBank for preservation. Once upon a time, there was a Chinese fishing boat 3089… The boat crossed territorial sea, so it was detained by the Taiwan Coast Guard. Little by little… people almost forgot that it existed. Unconsciously…Purple morning glory flowers have been covering its wooden body. They have been its only companion for many years. This is it ! 3089 had been lying quietly in the recycling station of Kinmen for more than half a century! It is waiting to meet you, him(her) and me…

This is an installation artwork about time & space/ memory & flow. The work unfolds through the old wooden fishing boat abandoned with a history of more than half a century. It includes visual and auditory components that bridge the local nature, humanities, fishing culture, and human lives of Kinmen to form a unique story. Human and nature jointly shape the landscape of time. The accumulation of time and space has carved a sculpture artwork. Let us observe and explore this world with a childlike curiosity and naïveté. . 今晚颱風天,來聽聽藝術家~趙書榕《跟你說個故事》。
就在金門縣金湖鎮新湖漁港,正展出趙書榕《跟你說個故事》作品,是一艘廢棄的50年前木構漁船,上面佈著爬藤與紫色牽牛花,經趙書榕以海廢媒材用一個月的時間改造,拖著藍白綠漸層流刺網編織的長長尾巴,綴著各式貝殼串起的叮咚鈴響,在海風中悠揚的唱著自己的旋律。

This book focuses on the development of Taiwanese women’s art between 2003 and 2023. The book includes 135 women’s art practices in Taiwan in the 21st century, with a theoretical consideration of historical narratives, diasporic aesthetics, ethnic identities, everyday life, gender politics, textiles and folklore culture, abstract art and spiritual exploration, posthumanism and cyberfeminism.

以自身為中心點,訪談了周遭十多位客籍親朋好友,客家文化已經深入我們的生活當中,將對於他們自身情感和家庭的珍貴照片或物件重新用翻模的方式,以磚推砌的流動意象,並且加入其他珍貴小物件,藉由一塊塊大大小小的「磚」所延伸出的多種思考角度 : 民族植物、食材、容器、烹調、歷史人文、人類遷徙、地理…,更重要的是串起人與人之間的那份情感,猶如時間空間記憶的封存和結晶。
「磚」和「行李箱」的堆疊展示猶如客家人勤儉樸拙的個性,各種新舊記憶間堆疊出生命的迴廊意境,並象徵著客家族群在臺灣各地深刻的發展,同時作品將給予觀者一層層回憶,隨著不同角度觀看,有不同的驚喜及呈現方式,同時觀者也將成為作品的一部分。

Take myself as the center point and I interviewed more than ten Hakka relatives and friends around me. Hakka culture has penetrated deeply into our lives. I used epoxy resin to mold and added precious photos and objects that were meaningful to their emotions and family. Through the flowing image of “bricks” and the various perspectives of thinking extended by “bricks” of various sizes: ethnic plants, food ingredients, containers, cooking, history and culture, human migration, geography… What’s more important is the connection between people, which is like the sealing and crystallization of time and space memories.
The stacked display of “bricks” and “suitcases” seems to symbolize the diligent, thrifty and simple personality of the Hakka people. The stacking of various old and new memories creates the artistic conception of the corridor of life, and symbolizes the profound development of the Hakka community in various parts of Taiwan. At the same time, the work will give participants several layers of memories and accumulations. The participants can take a walk freely and discover this artwork. The participants will find different surprises and presentations through different kinds of perspectives of the work.
Thus, they become an integral part of this installation.

新媒體錄像作品《異鄉巴別塔》靈感源自聖經中的「巴別塔」故事,延續我自2005年以來對當代藝術多重主題的探索與關懷,涵蓋懷鄉情懷、身份認同、離散、情境偏移,以及對烏托邦的想像與追尋。這些主題不僅根植於我個人記憶漫遊的私密經驗,也映照了全球化時代中普遍存在的處境:人們在多重文化與語言環境中穿梭,在「地方」與「非地方」之間遷徙,於漂泊與扎根之間尋找身份的定位。
作品聚焦於臺灣的臺中清水眷村的在地歷史與文化變遷,交織史前中社遺址、台灣原住民文化、日治時期新高港的建設,以及戰後國軍眷村的發展脈絡,呈現地方記憶的層層疊構。同時,作品也融合我長期關注的其他場域與經驗素材──如台北南機場公寓,見證都市演變與庶民生活的現場;亦如東南亞新住民社群,映現台灣多元族群共構的���化風景。透過這些跨域記憶與影像的交織,《異鄉巴別塔》試圖搭建一座象徵性的「文化巴別塔」,回應當代社會中多語、多元與多重身份共存下的張力與可能。
The new media video work « Tower of Babel in a Foreign Land » draws inspiration from the biblical story of the Tower of Babel. It extends my ongoing exploration since 2005 of multiple interwoven themes in contemporary art, including nostalgia, identity, displacement, spatial dislocation, and the pursuit of utopian ideals. These themes are rooted in the intimate realm of personal memory drift, while also reflecting the broader conditions of a globalized world—where individuals navigate through multilingual and multicultural environments, migrate between “places” and “non-places,” and search for a sense of identity amid the tension between rootlessness and belonging.
The work centers on the local history and cultural transformations of Qingshui Military Dependents’ Village in Taichung, Taiwan, weaving together layers of historical narratives—from the prehistoric Zhong-She archaeological site and Indigenous cultures, to the construction of Shin-Ko Harbor during the Japanese colonial era, and the post-war development of military dependents’ villages. These intertwined temporalities reveal the sedimented memory of place. At the same time, the work incorporates other sites and lived experiences I have long engaged with—such as the Nanji Chang Apartment Complex in Taipei, a witness to urban transformation and grassroots life; and the Southeast Asian immigrant communities, which embody the multicultural mosaic of contemporary Taiwan. Through the convergence of these cross-regional memories and visual fragments, « Tower of Babel in a Foreign Land » aspires to construct a symbolic “cultural Babel”—a structure that reflects both the tensions and possibilities of coexistence in today’s multilingual, pluralistic, and multi-identity society.

« 翻 ∞ 憶 » 清水篇則是將眷村、家庭、書信重新用翻模的方式,以新舊紅磚和藝術家特製的「語言水磚」推砌的意象,並且加入其他珍貴小物件,新舊記憶間堆疊出生命的迴廊意境,體驗著生命中的去與留,並提出「World without Strangers」之想法,以及城市、建築、環境、歷史…多元漫遊的呈現。

« Molding ∞ Memories » Qingshui Chapter is the In Situ Mixed Media Art Installation that the artist repurposed the letters from military Kindred villages and immigrant families in the way of re-molding, and using old and new red bricks and the artist’s specially made “language water bricks”, and also adding other precious small objects. The stacking of old and new memories creates the artistic conception of the corridor of life. Participants experienced the leaving and staying in life, and puts forward the idea of ​​"World without Strangers", as well as the presentation of diverse wanderings in cities, architecture, environment, history…

« 眷戀清水日記 »是藝術家初到清水眷村的水墨日記書寫,蜿蜒屈伸於空間中,對於眷村所觀看的新穎視角,以及與藝術家生命有所連結的感性書寫和圖畫,流動穿梭於各個時空的影像和記憶,給予觀者一層層的回憶和堆積,並且留有多個小驚喜給觀者於展場中去探索和發現,不同角度的觀看,不同的驚喜和呈現,觀者也將成為作品的一部分 (身體 <-> 記憶<-> 流動)。

« Diary of Nostalgia for Qingshui » is an ink diary written by the artist when she first arrived at Qingshui Military Kindred Village.
The work meanders and stretches in the space, offering a novel perspective on Qingshui Military Kindred Village, as well as perceptual writings and drawings that are connected to the artist’s life. The participants travels through images and memories in various time and space as the works flow.
They give the participants several layers of memories and accumulations. The participants can take a walk freely and discover this artwork. The participants will find different surprises and presentations through different kinds of perspectives of the work. Thus, they become an integral part of this installation.

書榕的錄像與複合媒材作品,往往探討有關 「游離」、「漂泊」、「旅行」等課題,她的《Taiwan Venus》作品以台灣自然植物與種子編織成一小禮服,以表演及物件的形式呈現富有台灣區域性特質的作品,以及一種充滿對於美麗、 烏托邦和女神的想像,作品亦包含一水墨素描長卷軸(植物收集研究 (Plant Collection Research/Diary 46 cm x 15000 cm) ,以水墨繪畫及文字書寫方式記錄製作此禮服所採用的樹根和種子,及數件藝術家穿著此禮服,於台灣各地具���雕塑感的老建築自拍的影像作品,呈現跨越時間和空間的記憶模式和材料的漫遊旅行。
Chao’s work often combines videos and mixed media to discuss memories, traveling, diaspora/disassociation, wandering and being away from home.
Her « Taiwan Venus » is an artwork brimming with the characteristics of Taiwan through the forms of performance and object, in a dress made from Taiwanese plants and seeds. Through the artist’s re-imagination of beauty, Utopia and the idea of “goddess,” this piece becomes possibilities of different materials.
The artworks also includes a Chinese ink sketch in the form of a long scroll (Plant Collection Research/Diary, 46 cm x 15000 cm). Here, Shu-Jung describes how she collected the natural materials to make the gown, as well as the illustrations. In addition she has included a selection of color “selfies”, which the artist took in several sculptural architectures in Taiwan.

This is an installation artwork about time & space/ memory & flow.
It includes visual, auditory, and tactile components that bridge the culture, archaeology, soundscapes, and human lives of military village to form a unique story.
I repurposed the letters from military villages and immigrant families in the way of re-molding, using the image of bricks and adding other precious small objects, stacking the old and new memories to create the artistic conception of the corridor of life.
They give the participants several layers of memories and accumulations. The participants can take a walk freely and discover this artwork. The participants will find different surprises and presentations through different kinds of perspectives of the work.
Thus, they become an integral part of this installation.

此錄像行為表演記錄為2022年���麥提舞團合作, 在疫情期間藉由自己身體的行動行腳於自身居住周遭所在地域。藉著「個體」與「場域」對話的當下進行就地創作。
藉由自己手中的鏡頭,在行腳之間將景物捕捉,也將創作記錄著,同時把當下蒐集的影像媒材,利用網路平台即時分享,讓藝術家帶著參與者在這後疫情時代透過鏡頭也能隨心所欲的遨遊台灣。
透過平台連結人、土地、藝術表演,藝術家回歸身體以行腳的方式,達成藝術創作與實踐,產生出觀眾參與雲端戶外空間及觀賞藝術的新模式。透過此計畫,將藝術家們的能量散播至台灣全國各地,對正面臨疫情期間浮動的社會氛圍,能有多一些正面影響,產生連結及抒發。網絡將人、土地和藝術表演串連,透過雲端帶領觀眾走出被限制的生活圈外、參與創作當下,倚作疫情與藝術創作共存下衍伸的新模式。 
This video performance documentation captures a 2022 collaboration with the Mai-Ti Dance Company, undertaken during the pandemic. Through personal, bodily movement within the artist's immediate surroundings, the work unfolds as a site-specific creation, fostering a dialogue between "individual" and "environment."
Using a handheld camera, the artist captures scenes and documents the creative process during these explorations, sharing collected footage in real time via online platforms. This allows participants to virtually experience Taiwan alongside the artist, roaming freely through the post-pandemic lens. By connecting people, landscapes, and performance art through digital platforms, the artist reinvigorates the body as a means of creating and practicing art, opening a new mode for audiences to engage in outdoor, cloud-based spaces and to appreciate art.
This project radiates the artists' energy across Taiwan, aiming to bring a positive influence to the fluctuating social atmosphere during the pandemic by fostering connection and expression. The internet links people, land, and performance, guiding audiences out of confined spaces to participate in the moment of creation. This approach presents an emerging model of coexistence between pandemic conditions and artistic creation.

由「船 」所延伸的多種思考角度,猶如象徵著客家族群在臺灣各地深刻的發展。蜿蜒屈伸於百年老樹中,流動穿梭於各個時空的影像和記憶,給予觀者一層層的回憶和堆積,不同角度的觀看,不同的驚喜和呈現,觀者也將成為作品的一部分 (身體<-> 記憶<-> 流動)。
Through multiple perspectives of the “boat” and the extended meanings of the “boat”, those are metaphors that the Hakka group has developed profoundly throughout Taiwan.
Ninety boats are sailing, winding and stretching among the century-old trees. The precious historical patterns on the boats travel through time and space. They give the participants several layers of memories and accumulations. The participants can take a walk freely and discover this artwork ( The Hakka Culture & History, this big Banyan tree with rich history…). The participants will find different surprises and presentations through different kinds of perspectives of the work.
Thus, they become an integral part of this installation.

在遠處,參與者隱約先被聲音所吸引著,隨著慢慢地走進而發現若隱若現的網狀編織隱藏於樹林中,接著映入眼簾的是多個大型蜘蛛網,結合公園內的自然媒材(蛤、昆蟲蛻變留下的殼、種子(銀葉樹、欖仁、海檬果、槭樹…)、鹹草繩、藤蔓、榕樹根、月桃葉、樹皮、蘆葦、…) ,以及餐廳回收的海鮮殼類來象徵這塊土地豐富的生態(潮間帶、蟹、貝殼…)一起裝置成屬於我個人特色的作品,除了有童趣可愛的編成組織,更包含了視覺上的量感,當觀者可自由穿梭漫步其中,漸漸發現了作品的’‘音景’’(關渡人文、公園動植物與人類生命的故事),觀者也是作品之一,同樣的觀者也是在被觀察。在這個人情感經驗和外在世界的結合,配合關渡自然公園所呈現的空間意象,呈現出超越地域與物質性的氛圍與精神,猶如經歷一場時間空間之旅,隨著時間的流逝,作品將有著不同的變化,作品會有植物成長延展的痕跡,昆蟲和生物將慢慢寄居其中,作品最終將回歸於自然,變成關渡自然公園的一部分。
This is an installation artwork about time & space/ memory & flow. It includes visual, auditory, and tactile components that bridge the culture, archaeology, soundscapes, flora and fauna in the Nature Park, and human lives of Guandu to form a unique story. Human and nature jointly shape the landscape of time. The accumulation of time and space has carved a sculpture artwork. Let us observe and explore this world with a childlike curiosity and naïveté.
From the distance, participants were attracted to the site by sounds. They walked slowly into this mesh woven piece hidden in the woods and saw many large spider webs. The natural materials used for this artwork are from the Nature Park, including clam, shred insect shells, seeds of Looking Glass Tree, Indian Almond, Common Cerberus Tree, Maple Tree, straw ropes, vines, Banyan roots, beautiful galangal leaves, tree barks, reeds, as well as recycled shells of sea food from restaurants to signify the abundant ecological diversity (intertidal zone, crabs, seashells, etc.)
The whole installation reveals my own style, such as weaving work of childhood fun and cuteness and visual sense of volume. The audience can take a walk freely and discover the soundscape of this artwork ( the local culture, flora and fauna and local residents’life stories in Guandu ). The viewers are an integral part of this installation. The observers are also being observed in such space full of images of the Guandu Nature Park, where personal emotional experiences are connected with external world. We are taking a special journey in time and space in an ambience and spirit beyond locality and materiality. The artwork changes with passing time. There will be traces of insects and other living creatures and plants growing onsite. The artwork will eventually return to nature and become part of the Guandue Nature Park.
