The numbat is a small, insectivorous mammal native to western Australia. It was once common in southern Australia as well, and has only recently been reintroduced in that area. While it has sometimes been called the banded anteater or marsupial anteater, it has no relation to true anteaters. It is, in fact, a marsupial.
