You ever realize all the millennial energy that Jessie, James, and Meowth give off? Case in point…
they’re 25 years old (Meowth is probably a young adult in pokémon years) who
are frequently broke and can barely afford basic living expenses
often waste money on stupid shit they don’t really need
but will always sacrifice funds for their friends
Jessie has many ambitions but lacks the money, skills, and resources to make them happen
James rejected the lifestyle and marital expectations of his parents in the pursuit of his own freedom
Meowth wasted his energy to learn a skill that didn’t lead to the life of happiness he expected
they work for a “company” led by a dismissive boss, fully expecting to be promoted for their hard work
frequently take on part-time jobs (which they’re very good at) to support their long-term career goals
James collects trinkets that are ultimately useless besides sentimental value
Jessie partakes in hobbies/competitions that are typically outside her age group for the fun of it
Meowth craves affection to the point that he projects fantasies onto his boss
Wobbuffet is a one trick pony, but does that trick very well
are often depicted as having horrible book smarts, but carry a lot of emotional intelligence
will jump at the prospect of free food
When we were kids, we all wanted to be like Ash Ketchum.
But we all grew up to be Team Rocket.

YES I can’t emphasise how important this is. I’ve had a surprising amount of work stolen on other platforms in the past- and it seriously sucked, even though I don't rely on my art to earn an income. This is why I keep adding watermarks in my art although I find that they make the piece look weird.  This is a prevalent problem across the internet and it’s actively destroying the livelihoods of people trying to make a career out of their talent, blood and sweat. This is why so many of my friends who are artists don’t want to post their art online. A few suggestions in relation to this:
1. Check your sources- If the blog seems to post a huge number of posts with extremely inconsistent art work to the point that you cannot tell that the same artist did the work (especially in a short period of time), it is very likely that the work is simply a repost. Look out for blogs that link back to the source and indicate that permission to repost the art from the actual artist, and support those instead. It won’t hurt to do a reverse search on the art either.  2. ASK THE ARTIST if you want to use the work- Especially if what you are using it for is publicised (On an account, etc.) 3. Check the account of the artist- See if they indicate any terms of use regarding their art. Some artists specifically mention that you are allowed to modify their work, some only allow reblog. If nothing is shown then just reach out to the artist and ask if you don’t know. Many artists accept inquiries about their art.  Overall, just remember that an artist is not an art generator robot that vomits art for everyone to use. Artists are living, breathing humans that work hard towards their achievements. They deserve recognition for their art and should not have this taken away from them because people want a shortcut to pretty up their blogs. I don’t and never will promote the idea that having your art stolen is “flattering”. Yes, maybe it’s nice to see that your art was nice enough for someone to like your art so much that they decided to use it for their own image. But the lack of respect shown to just TAKE A FEW MINUTES of time to simply ask overrides that completely. It would not be “flattering” if you relied on your art to put food on the table and you lose opportunities to earn. Support would be spreading the name of the artist whose art you like so much and encouraging them. Taking works without asking and credit and saying that you are spreading the art around as “Promotion” or because you simply like it/found it is harming them. This really isn't addressed enough and as a result of this people who enter or are exposed to the art community may not understand this. Like the original post says, we need more awareness towards this legitimate issue and the actions we take. Spreading this could help promote a better art community especially towards the artists that we know and love.
What Stealing Artwork Does to an Artist
Financially
They can get sued. If they work for a company or studio, their artwork is usually copyrighted. Japan has strict laws about that. If their employer or the company finds one of their works floating around, they can get in trouble, and face lawsuits.
Many artists participate in doujinshi groups, or cons. To ‘advertise’ their future prints, they sometimes show samples, sometimes even full ones, that can be stolen. And when they try to sell their artwork prints, they get very little revenue, because it’s ALREADY FLOATING AROUND THE INTERNET, so why spend money for it?
Again, Artists also rely on commissions to support themselves and their loved ones. For those who are seeking jobs in the industry, having one of their drawings floating around can be very detrimental to their chances of landing a job. If their employer has already seen it on the internet, it looses it’s ‘effect’ once they see it from the artist themselves.
Basically, a LOT MORE.
Emotionally & Psychologically
It can make them LOSE THEIR CONFIDENCE to draw more artwork, because people keep claiming them as ‘theirs’
It can make them DEPRESSED AS HELL, and their family and friends will notice.
It can make them feel PARANOID about putting ANY of their works ONLINE.
It can make them lose SLEEP, APPETITE, MOTIVATION and INTEREST in doing what they USED TO LOVE TO DO.
Socially
Makes them lose their TRUST in letting foreigners see their art
Makes them UNCOMFORTABLE sharing their artwork AT ALL
Makes them feel so INSECURE that they make their accounts PRIVATE
Makes them feel that the best thing to do to stop the problem is to DELETE THEIR ARTWORKS or LEAVE ART SITES like Pixiv
You didn’t think it would have this much of an effect, did you? Of course, many people do not even think about these things. Posting an artwork is as easy as right-click save and paste. But the people who suffer for it are the artists.
This is why it is SO IMPORTANT to ASK PERMISSION. They NEED TO KNOW where their art is going, WHO is allowed to reprint from them, so they can keep track, and WHICH ARTWORK it is. Because some are OK, while others are not. Communication is the KEY to bridging gaps, and fostering TRUST, and building a positive relationship with ANYONE.
Btw, if anyone wants to add a point on there, feel free to message me, and let me know. I’m just putting this here, because many times, we do not even think about how our actions effect other people.
Edit: THIS is not limited to just Artists. Creators/Scanners/Translators (especially on tumblr) are also applicable to this, for the last two categories. I have some SEEN people STOP TRANSLATING/SCANNING for a certain fandom or group because their translations/scans are often STOLEN and pasted to other sites.
