SOURCE MATERIAL

These are a series of photographs taken of me for the self-ish project. I used these photographs for my self-portraits, stencils and print textural collage mainly. I am happy with this series and I feel that these were very useful and efficiency with giving me source material to create my studies from. These was taken at the very beginning of the project and have helped me throughout.

COLOUR AND TONE - PAINTING AND DRAWING

I chose option 1 for my task which was selecting one object with a coloured background. My chosen object for this task was a flask with the matching cap alongside it. I chose this object because I knew various colours would be reflected and create an interesting outcome. I was proven right by the blue reflecting from the windows and red from the tablecloth. I completed this on a section of a A3 page using acrylic paint and paint brushes. This painting took me the lesson and an extra three hours. I kept a record of every tints and shades I used which is the photo located top right. The aim of this task was to achieve accuracy and realism. There are strengths to the study. The painting has detail leading to the object becoming 3-Dimensional and life like. This is great because great depth is added creating a foreground and background to the painting. Another strength is that the red background contrasts against the flask nicely making the colours within the flask such as the blue and peach tones pop. This makes the light and dark areas easy to distinguish and add to the realistic appearance. The shadows are also nice since in nature there is natural black, so I mixed purple with the red to create the shadows. This is because I saw purple in the shadow and because this gives a nice deep definition to the shadow. These are strengths to the painting. A weakness is that I did not add the pattern on the tablecloth because I felt this would be too busy and take away from the flask. I would not change the outcome if compared to the photograph this is the only aspect different lacking the realistic effect. Overall, this is a painting I am very pleased with and would not change. I belief I have achieved a realistic painting and successful outcome.

Photography - ‘Self-ish’ Final Outcome And Evaluation.

This is my final outcome which consists of 8 photographs of myself exploring my identity. For my outcome I have expanded my original concept by following through my suggestions such as editing on software. The concept illustrates the series as if the viewer is conversing with me. At the beginning the full face and blank skin represents how when we first interact with an individual, we do not know anything apart from how the person looks that day. The shadows in the background created by double exposure are my own shadow which I manipulated to create various forms, and this represents our past identities which make up who we are today. Even if we do not know someone every individual as a history of identities which rounds and shapes us to who we are today. As the series progresses more patches are revealed, and these represent various aspects to identity such as personality and likes or dislikes. As this happens more and more makeup is removed alongside more patches being revealed and the shadows fading all leading to the last image which represents my identity today. Identity is always changing and adapting to our own self-discovery, so I left my identity blank because there is never anything set in stone. I completed the make-up, body art, taking the selfie by myself. This inspiration was sparked by looking at Cindy Sherman’s work and I liked the aspect of doing everything behind the camera myself. Since I completed this from home this also seemed the most practical method. I used my phone camera to take the photographs and then edited them on Adobe Photoshop to achieve my end result. The black and white reminds me of Francesca Woodman’s work and I think this goes well with the series and atmosphere. I achieved this look by selecting this filter in the adjustment panel. I kept the necklace on since this is my christening necklace and I do not take this off under any circumstance. This has become a part of me. There are successes and weaknesses to the series. A success is that compared to the last series the viewer can definitely tell that the make-up is gradually removed. When looking back at my original photos and feedback I can see that the make-up is not strong visually regarding the removal so this time I went heavier on the eyes so this would be more recognisable. I met this goal. Another success is that I was able to capture the headshot well by taking my own photographs allowing me to add the shadows into the background for an interesting composition. I really like the black and white filter because this works well with the style of the shadows and patches creating a balanced and coherent series. I think this is a very strong direction that I have took the series in and I feel that this is very strong and successful. A weakness is that the patches once drawn did not appear as big as I anticipated resulting in me having to squeeze in words and not having as many down as I would have liked. Because of this the writing came out messier than I would have liked which is another weakness. To solve this, I would do larger patches and cover more of my skin to make these stand out. Lastly, a weakness is that I only had gel eyeliner compared to the liquid pen version which I would have liked. The gel is a factor to the messy appearance, and this occurred last time as well and I wanted to prevent this. However, I was not able to get this item and to solve this weakness I would get gel eyeliner. Under this circumstance I like the outcome still. Even with both successes and weaknesses I am happy with my final outcome given circumstances, available equipment, and media.

Stencil Outcomes And Evaluations.

For my stencils I decided to use a photograph which I took and completed a watercolour painting of at the beginning of the project. I chose this specific photograph because I knew the flowers would create interesting shapes and bring an interesting effect to my final outcomes. I chose a three-layer stencil so I could add both shadow and highlights. The first layer is the top right, and this is the main layer, the bottom left is the second layer and is the shadows and the bottom right is the third layer which is highlights. First of all, I printed out my photograph in black and white, so It was easy for me to see what the main colour, shadows and highlights was. I then traced the photograph onto my first piece of card making sure to leave gaps between the areas to keep the sectioned outline. Then using an exacto knife I cut out the sections leaving my outcome in the photo on the top right. Now I repeated this process for the remaining two stencils however, I only drew where there were shadows or highlights on each and cut these out.
OUTCOMES 1 - 4:
1.

For my first outcome I used acrylic paint, a sponge and experimented with grey, black, and white in a monotone effect. The eyes and other facial features came out very successful and detailed. All the stencils layer perfectly and create a strong study of my chosen photograph. A weakness is that I did not add detailing for the hand on the shadow layer which would make the hand more 3-Dimensional and striking.
2.

For my second outcome I used soft pastel and experimented with this type of media by blending into the gaps with my finger. A success is that I was able to layer the red of the yellow through the layered stencil adding an attempt at definition. However, this media was unsuccessful. The media smudged everywhere once I removed the stencil and was hard to apply in small spaces because some of the stencil broke. I learned that soft pastel did not work so I chose to stick with acrylic paint.
3.

For my third outcome I used acrylic paint, a sponge and experimented with analogous colours such as yellow, green, and orange. These colours show up well against each other and capture details on areas such as the forehead, neck and hand which haven’t shown up as vibrant as before. The eye also has a lot of detail. A weakness is that at some points the stencil shifted causing the details on the left to not match properly.
4.

For my fourth outcome I used acrylic paint, a sponge and experimented with complimentary colours such as purple, yellow, and white for highlights. The yellow and purple work nicely against each other bringing the details out. The facial features worked well again especially the eye and eyebrow. A weakness is that the highlight on the hair on the right smudged a little making this area a little messy.
WHAT THE FIRST A3 DESIGN SHEET LOOKS LIKE:

Looking across my first four outcomes the least successful was the soft pastel which was my second attempt. I found this media a nightmare to work with my stencil because the media smudged everywhere, was faint and because my stencils are delicate from the rubbing back and forth pieces detached and fell off. The most successful in my opinion is the grey, black and white outcome which was the first. This is because this combination works great against each other and really brings out the detail. The stencils were also perfectly against each other leading to a successful study and experiment. The other two outcomes were still successful and are great further studies of the endless colour combinations that can be created. For these first four outcomes I chose to experiment with colour and see the effects before playing with composition which I do for my last three. Because acrylic worked as the best media, I chose to continue using this for my last three.
OUTCOMES 5 - 7:
5.

For my fifth outcome I played with composition by placing each layer slowly to the right each time. I chose the colours pink, black and silver. I used acrylic paint and a sponge. A success is that the colours work well together, and movement is created by the continuous shifting. A weakness is that the bottom smudged a little due to me forgetting to apply masking tape around the edges. Apart from this there is not much I would change.
6.

For my sixth outcome I played with composition by placing the first layer the right way up, the second layer upside down and then the third layer the right way up. I chose the colours light blue, dark blue and orange. I used acrylic paint and a sponge. A success is that the layers can be seen and that an abstract effect is seen which is interesting. An interesting composition is achieved. A weakness is that the blue can be seen through the orange, so I wish I sponged on a thicker layer of orange.
7.

For my last study I played with the stencils by reversing the order in which I layered them. By this I mean I placed the third stencil first, the second one second and the first layer third. I wasn’t sure what was going to happen, but I am pleased with the result. I chose pink, green, and brown since the brown would contrast nicely against the other two colours. Interestingly the green and pink layers can be seen through the brown which still adds definition to the image. This concept works especially well for the face and hair. Also, the colours can be seen subtle behind the brown. I really like this since I was not expecting this result and even though I reversed the layering a different and interesting image can be seen. These were all successes. A weakness is that because of the reverse layering detail on the flowers and shirt is left out which makes this feel incomplete.
WHAT THE SECOND A3 DESIGN SHEET LOOKS LIKE:

Looking across my last three outcomes the least successful was the last study which was the reversed layers. This study was still successful however, looking at the composition aspect I feel that my first two are more interesting to look at. The most successful in my opinion is the fifth study (first outcome on this sheet). This is because I really enjoy the colours against each other and the pulled apart movement. The details are also placed in interesting positions and this came out very successful. These three are great further studies of the endless composition combinations that can be created.
CONCLUSION AND EVALUATION:
Looking back over all of my outcomes I think that acrylic was the right media to use and that my stencils came out very well. I was not sure how to do my stencil but by experimenting and watching a few tutorials I managed to create my three-layered stencil which works perfectly with what I wanted to create. I am very pleased with my outcomes, experimentations, and stencils.

Relief study and painting
Possible compositions I made:

Final composition and outcomes:

Here is my relief study and painting. These studies are influenced by Ben Nicholson. I completed the study and template so to speak by using white card, scissors, and glue. I cut out squares, triangles, rectangles, and circles among layers and layered these to create the outcome. For the painting on the right, I used cereal box card and acrylic paint. While painting I had my template next to my laptop which explains the blue and yellow tones to the card. I completed both studies in under 2 hours each. A success is that I feel I have captured Nicholson's style in my template and painting creating interesting layers, effects, and tones. Also, another success is my composition since I feel this works well and is balanced. I like the colours in the painting, and I think I have achieved what I envisioned. The only weakness I think is that the painting could have had more blending especially with the blue, but I had trouble with the paint drying before I could blend. I feel that my work is effective with the cutting, construction, and painting since I have a strong relief and response to the artist. Overall, I am pleased with my outcomes.

Study From Journey

This is my response to my journey in which my chosen destination was Moneyhole Lane Park. I walk my dog, Wyatt, with my dad there every day and I have memories from going there as a child in the play area. For this study i looked back at the photographs I took for my mood board and withdrew the most important objects and words to express my journey. I used a combination of media such as watercolour paint, acrylic paint, marker pen, fine liner pen and biro. I drew the objects free hand from my reference photos and wanted to keep them connected but separate at the same time. Firstly, I painted my background with watercolour and the colours merging together are meant to represent my emotions and what they mean to me. I realised that from the childhood memories, topics me and my dad talk about , serious and light-hearted, there are so many emotions I feel every time we go. Because of this I chose the emotions which come up the most often and this is happiness, calmness, interest, and sadness. Yellow is happiness, purple is calmness, interest is orange and blue is sadness. I didn't want these too bright and to clash against the objects since this journey is pleasant and I wanted to convey that through harmony and balance in the work. I chose to paint and fill in my objects in a silhouette style because I can still keep my personal connection by keeping the details to myself but yet I am still allowing the viewer in to see the objects and feel my experiences. Lastly, the typography expresses key words which come to my mind when thinking about this place and journey and these can be seen on my mood board as well. At first, I was not sure how to approach this task, but I was able to gather inspiration from going on the walk the next day and start to plan my work such as representations, style, and colours. Not an easy or simple process but I really like the end study. Everything comes together very well, and this is a study which I think is successful and proud of.

Print Textural Collage - Part 3.
Mixed Media Rubbings
Here are mixed media studies I have completed using my textured collage from a couple posts ago. Mixed media is combining materials together such as biro and watercolour to create a finished outcome.
1.

I used 2B pencil, Highlighter, Oil Pastel and Charcoal for this work. I like the sectioned effect by using media in split areas to create division and movement within in the work. The colours also blend together and I like the textures I was able to pick up with the pencil and emphasise with the other media over the top. In addition I like the texture of the charcoal from where I have rubbed this along the bottom and sides. I would have liked the textures to come across more though in the base layer to create more depth in the work. I like this work.
2.

I like the abstract approach I took to create this piece. I used pencil, felt tip and oil pastel to create this work. I used one media and shades small areas over the page moving my collage underneath. I moved this around and rotated it to create interesting sections and textures. I repeated this for oil pastel and this creates an effect as if I pieced this work together seperatly. I enjoy the outline with maker pen to enhance the fractured effect which I really like and is a strength. The colours also work well together and clash against eachother nicely creating a contrast. Another effect I like is that the textures can be seen especially with the yellow and card swatches. A weakness is that I wish I layered the colours and areas more to choose any gaps and create a piled effect. I like this work because of the abstract and wacky approach.
3.

I experimented with red and blue paint and biro. For this study I did not move around the collage I wanted to see how the colours look once layered. I watered the acrylic paints down with water to thin them out and using a brush I lightly glided across the page. I started with the red first and I was easily able to pick up textures and definite features especially the hand and face. The blue further picked up texture especially around the hair compared to the red and I created harsher patches with more product on purpose around for an unblended look. Once dried using a biro I was able to outline areas where texture was picked up the most and with the heavy paint switches I outlined around following the brush strokes enhancing the effect. The red and blue work together strikingly and create a contrast I really enjoy. The style I also like and the textures with the biro also pop adding depth and dimension. Out of these mixed media experiments this is my favourite and most successful in my opinion and the second study is the least successful for me.
4.

I used coloured pencils, charcoal, oil pastel, marker pen and 2B pencil. I took rubbings of the face in red, orange and yellow coloured pencils across the page and the I worked over the top using the rest of the media for sections. This method creates a collage and overlapped style which I like and reminds me of abstract artwork. A strength is that the textures come through well and are distinctive showing the textures clearly. This imagery creates an interesting layer and brings movement to the work. Another aspect which is strong is that the media works together and to me appears balanced and a chaotic appearance which to me works well. A weakness is that the yellow rubbing of the face did not worm and this could be due to how light this is. This is strong.
5.

I used a 2B pencil and blue acrylic paint. I took a rubbing of the entire portrait in pencil and then turned the portrait upside down and took a rubbing in watered down acrylic. A strength is that the acrylic paint is not too thick and the pencil rubbing is visible underneath. This works really well and I like the layering effect. Another strength is that the colour blue works well since this is bright and contrasts nicely with the pencil. The acrylic also seemed to pick up several textures which was successful. A weakness is that I wish the pencil was darker so the first layer shined through more brightly creating more contrast. This will be down to me not pressing down enough. Overall, this is among my favourites of mixed media studies. Simple but very strong.
6.

I used 2B pencil, charcoal, red pencil, oil pastel, biro, magazine, tissue paper and book page. I took a 2B pencil rubbing and then torn sections of the different media stucking this down. I then lined my page with the texture portrait and went over the sections with different media to fill in the gaps. A strength is that this looks like a collage and I like the use of new surface media such as tissue paper because more texture is added. This also makes the work more interesting. A weakness is that the red coloured pencil was not very strong and failed to pick up textures. I do not like this study since this came out different to how I expected.
Working with mixed media has been fun and allowed me to explore avenues that the single rubbings did not. I played around by moving the collage, experimented with composition, layers and colours to create these works.

Business Cards - Graphics
Business Card Research (Moodboard):

Here are my business card research pages. On the first page I explored various designs for inspiration and on the second page I explored ethics and sustainability. All information and websites has been referenced.
Business cards:

I chose to design business cards over business logo and this is my design sheet. I came up with four ideas for me as a photographer, illustrator and artist. The information on the back is from a fake address generator. All of the cards have features which coincide with the career and each of the designs I think are really strong. I like the first business card because to me this comes across very sophisticated with a touch of glam which represents myself in a way. I like idea two because the colours come together nicely and the way I added the maker reminds me of waves. I don't like how blended it looks since I aimed for a blotchy approach but this card still works well. I like the idea I had for the graphics card because if put together one side has the woman and the other side has the man which is a nice concept. I also like how these are my own quick drawings to promote my own work on the front and back too. I don't like how there is no colour on the sides with the figures. I think touches of colour would have made these looked even better. Lastly, I love the paint effect with the camera and it suits my style as an artist and accentuates the camera nicely. The camera was a rough sketch and this came out nicely. I don't like how square the card is on the left hand side. Cutting the edges off around the camera would have given a nice effect I think. Overall strong business cards which I like equally and feel represent myself professionally and accurately.

Print Textural Collage - Part 1.
From looking across my self portrait studies I decided to go for my tonal drawing of my hand over my mouth for this. Once decided I printed of my photograph that I used for the drawing A4 sized and collected textures around the house to use for my print textural collage. I made a sample board.
Chosen Drawing:

Sample Board:

I played with plenty of textures such as wool, sandpaper, yarn, rice, strips of card, tin foil, layers of card, rolled up paper, torn card, tissue paper balls and ridged paper. I was intrigued to see how these would come across with rubbings. I was skeptical about the wolf and squished tissue paper balls. I took 4 rubbings in various media such as oil pastel, 5H pencil, charcoal pencil (Dark) and 2B pencil.
Below are my rubbings:

Surprisingly, the wool didn't show up on any of the rubbings which could be due to sticking it down the way I did but I am not sure. The pulled apart side came up more than the lines however even the pulled apart showings was very faint. Sandpaper, lines of card, tin foil and the ridged card came out the most successful with wool and rolled up paper the least. I am not sure why I could never pick up any detailed textures. I like the 2B rubbing the best because the 5H was too light and the 2B was able to pick up more details. Due to the 5H pencil being so light this rubbing came out as my least favourite. With my samples complete I traced my A4 photograph using a HB pencil and baking paper. I made a comtomour drawing and transferred this to my card.
Contour drawing on card and baking paper:

Collage started:

First I approached with the hair and rather than stuck with one texture I went for a couple such as ridged paper, tin foil and strips of card. This was the start of my process. During my process I took samples mainly of the hand area to see if i needed to alter any parts before moving on to achieve my desired effect. My other sample was of the sandpaper to see if the 150 sample or 6p looked better for the sleeve. This was to see if I was heading in the right direction.

These are the samples I took and the hand came out the best I could make it for sticking to a max of three layers of textures in height. I can identify what it is and tell the dark and light areas creating the contour drawing effect. Successful. I decided to use the 60 sand paper rubbing since the specs came out much more potent which when looking at the photo the jumper appears to be. Because of these samples I was able to tell what to use where and what texture suits each area allowing me to complete my print textural collage successfully.

Print Textural Collage - Part 2.
Finished result:

I am very happy with how the textural collage came out since this replicates the photograph perfectly and in addition I achieved the contour style. I like my use of placement because I can tell that the textures should give me a close rubbing and interesting textures which should work together. Using A4 printer paper and various media such as oil pastel, soft pastel, 2B pencil, 5H pencil, HB pencil and Charcoal pencil.
Here are the results:

All rubbings both have strengths and weaknesses. For oil pastel, the media was easy to use, I can see different textures and the outline. These aspects make this a strong study and collage. However, a weakness is that the media has a blurry effect to it which make some aspects hard to distinguish. This is not the best nor worst. For the soft pastel this was a total experiment to see what the outcome would be like. A strength is that a brief outline is seen. A weakness is that the media was messy, powdery, failed to pick up most textures and smudged everywhere. This led to a unsuccessful study and the worst media to use. For the pencil studies I wanted to see which one would pick up details the best and the 2B pencil did. The 5H and HB were light and failed to pick up textures or outlines compared to 2B. This led to less distinguished and weaker studies. Through using these three options and my samples the best pencil to use for rubbings is 2B for the best outcome. This is my favourite out of all six. Lastly for charcoal, I was able to pick up textures, outline and details which was good. However, like oil pastel this smudged a lot, several textures like sandpaper was not picked up compared to other media and the eyes came out slanted. This could be due to the paper moving. My print textural collage formed the photograph accurately making it successful. I like the various textures and outcome. My favourite rubbing was the 2B pencil and the least was soft pastel due to my evaluation above.

Painting With Scissors - Analogous Colours
Possible compositions I made:

End result:

Here is my outcome for experimenting painting with scissors and analogous colours. The colours I chose was yellow, light green and dark green which are next to each other on the colour wheel. I used coloured card for all three colours. This was to experiment with composition and positive/negative shapes. I used natural objects such as plants, leaves, apple and plant pot e.t.c as my subjects. I like the composition I came up with and everything balanced each other out. This is a strength. In addition I enjoy the yellow and shades of green against each other because this has a calming atmosphere. A weakness is that this took me too long to do and next time I will learn to be quicker. I've learned to be spontaneous since this led to stronger compositions compared to thinking about it too much. Overall a really strong study which I really like.

Painting With Scissors - Complementary colours
Possible compositions I made:

End result:

Here is my outcome for experimenting painting with scissors and complementary colours. The colours I chose was yellow and purple. I used coloured card for yellow and white card painted purple for the purple card. This was to experiment with composition and positive/negative shapes. I used natural objects such as plants, leaves, apple and carrot e.t.c as my subjects. I like the composition I came up with which works really well with the purple and yellow. This is a strength. In addition I enjoy the texture of the brush on the purple since this replicates a wood surface and texture. A weakness is that this took me too long to do and next time I will learn to be quicker. Overall a really strong study and my favourite out of my two studies because everything works well together.

'A Journey'

For my journey I chose to document moneyhole lane park as I visit here everyday with my dad for a walk to walk my dog and have childhood memories here. In the top left I have mapped out the park in a smaller scale and dotted the journey me and my dad took around in which we walked over for around an hour. Below I have a couple sketches of aspects from my drawings in biro, pencil and marker pen. I took this aspect from photographs I took which are on the bottom right of the page. Lastly, I have documented my thoughts, memories, sounds and observations through the two brief paragraphs, individual words around the page and the thought bubbles. Overall I am very happy with my outcome and the way I have presented my journey.

Identity - photography

Here is my collection of 9 photos I have produced to express my identity. I wanted to produce a series so the viewer can engage, and a relationship can be built. The idea behind the series is to show how I am first seen with the first photograph and then gradually my physical attributes, personality and interests come out alongside the makeup slowly coming off leaving me in the last photograph. The last photograph is what a bare faced realistic me is. I wanted the series to feel as if you are learning about someone by stripping back the layers from what you first notice to the second and third. I really like this idea of expression an informal interaction to the viewer.
A strength is that the series came out exactly how I wanted then photographed with the headshot and composition. Another strength is that the face paint I used for the writing was easy to apply and remove so this was a plus with working with the media. In addition, I feel that my message comes across well and can be perceived how I wanted by the viewer. I like the fact that everything works together compared to separate photographs. A weakness is that some of the writing is faint and this comes across especially in the last couple of photographs. This can be due to the flashlight or lack of product. I do not like this because the writing becomes uneven and anaesthetic to the face. Next time I would use a eyeliner pen since this will be dark and more precise to use. Overall, I am pleased with the outcome.

Tonal Study.

This is my finished tonal study completed using a HB and 3H pencil, eraser, sharpener and cotton bud. For this image I created a still life, drew it and then in the four boxes I took other features within my drawing and drew these in. This has created nice contrast and composition within the drawing and formed a more interesting overall image. I like this approach because everything works nicely together and has a balanced look towards the work. This can be due to having four boxes as well which is even. A success is that the objects seem to go well together composition wise and create an interesting combination I feel. In addition, I think my use of tone works really well with this drawing and all the objects look realistic and I achieved this by looking at the objects closely before drawing and while drawing so I could create the wide range of tones. A weakness is that I wish I the drawing was up the page more rather than the bottom since there is no space towards the top of the page and nothing at the bottom. In addition, I wish the boxes were bigger especially the ones with the mug and disaronno. This would have seemed like a more filled out drawing. This drawing took me 5-6 hours to complete and is successful.
I am very content with the tonal drawing and I enjoyed drawing the boxes since this is a different approach I take to studies.

Tone paper drawings.

Here are two tonal drawings of a sheet of paper under different lighting conditions. I used a HB pencil to create these.
For my first drawing I placed the folded paper on a piece of plain paper and placed these on my windowsill. The natural light casted interesting shadows for me to transfer through tone on the paper. I used a cotton bud to blend out the pencil and also an eraser to add highlight back in or erase. A strength Is that the outline and shading is very accurate to the paper that was on my windowsill and the various tones add dimension into the sheet. I think it is easy to see where the folds are and the directions everything is in. A weakness is that I wish I had more time to deepen the shadow under the paper to add more composition and context to the drawing. However successful overall.
For my second drawing I placed the folded piece of paper on plain paper and placed under artificial lighting. I used a cotton bud to blend out the pencil and an eraser. A strength is that through the accurate shading and depth it is easy to see that half the paper was folded over and stayed in the air. This added interesting composition and placement to the drawing compared to the first one which was just flat. The shading is very accurate which is another success. A weakness is that although I finished the shading on the right hand side I was not able to add details due to limited time. A strong and successful study I am happy with.
I enjoyed trying something new and I think both drawings came out great.
