The man suspected of carrying out the Christchurch mosque shootings is to be charged with 50 counts of murder, New Zealand police say. He is due to appear in court on Friday.
The Australian man accused of killing 50 Muslim worshippers in a shooting spree at two mosques in New Zealand will be charged with 50 counts of murder and 39 counts of attempted murder at a second court appearance on Friday, New Zealand police say.
Police added that other charges "are still under consideration." The suspect had earlier had a single representative murder charge filed against him for the killings on March 15.
Brief court appearance
The man, 28-year-old Brenton Tarrant, will appear via video link from a maximum-security prison in Auckland. The hearing is to "ascertain the defendant's position regarding legal representation" and other procedural issues." The man will not be required to enter a plea, the court said. He has sacked a court-appointed lawyer, raising fears he will use the trial to air white supremacist views.
Media photographs will not be allowed and reporting will be restricted to avoid prejudicing the potential jurors.
Wounded still in hospitals
Twenty-four people are still in hospital receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the attack, four of them in critical condition, including a 4-year-old girl, health authorities said earlier this week.

What conclusions has New Zealand drawn from the attacks? New Zealand has moved quickly to tighten its previously lax gun laws, among other things banning the semi-automatic and automatic military-style weapons used in the attack. The government has said it will also review laws dealing with hate speech.
Read more: New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern's fight against terror, guns
Will the accused be tried for terrorism? The attacks have been termed a terrorist act by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. However, New Zealand's complex and seldom-used anti-terrorism laws, introduced after the 9/11 attacks, could make prosecution more complicated. Prosecutors may still apply them to make it clear that extremism of any kind, whether Islam, right-wing or left-wing, is equally dangerous. Charges of murder and attempted murder are easier to pursue, however.
How is the accused being held? New Zealand's Corrections Department said last month that the accused was being kept away from other prisoners and was without access to television, radio or newspapers. It said he was also not allowed to receive visitors.

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez mocked President Donald Trump on Twitter on Wednesday after he again claimed that an audit meant he wouldn't release his tax returns.
"We didn't ask you," tweeted the freshman representative, who has established a reputation for battling Republicans on social media.
Earlier Wednesday, the Democratic chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee formally requested six years of Trump's personal and business tax returns from the IRS under an obscure code.
Read more: Democratic lawmaker asks IRS for 6 years of Trump's tax returns
As a presidential nominee, Trump broke with decades of precedent when he refused to release his tax returns, saying they were under audit by tax officials.
Only one other major-party presidential nominee has refused to disclose the information: Gerald Ford in 1976 released tax summary data but not full returns.
When asked by reporters on Wednesday whether he planned to release the returns, Trump again declined and said they remained under audit.
"We're under audit, despite what people said," Trump said. "We're working that out as — I'm always under audit it seems. But I've been under audit for many years because the numbers are big, and I guess when you have a name you're audited. But until such time as I'm not under audit, I would not be inclined to do that."
The IRS has said there are no rules preventing a person from sharing tax information while they are being audited.

Life can be exhausting, and when you're not getting a good night's sleep, it's hard to be productive, balance your emotions, and stay healthy. We all know the importance of eating right and exercising, but sleep is just as key to promoting a healthy and happy life.
Just as you track your steps or count your calories, you should be keeping tabs on your sleep routine. But unfortunately, the Apple Watch doesn't come equipped with a sleep tracker.
While we patiently wait for Apple to add that functionality to their Health App, you can try downloading one of the four apps below (all available on the App Store).
We tested out all four in order to provide accurate reviews of each.
AutoSleep offers a super quick setup — you don't even need to make an account. Perfect for people who like to lay in bed and watch TV or read a book, AutoSleep requires you to tell the app that you're going to sleep (through its Lights Off function). In other words, a six-hour, unmoving Netflix binge will never trick it into thinking you've fallen asleep. You can activate Lights Off directly from your Apple Watch and track how long it takes you to fall asleep.
You can view your sleep session on a graph that plots how deep your sleep was, as well as your heart rate against time. It will show the peaks and troughs in your sleep that indicate when you woke up and when you were in sound slumber.
The sleep rings show your time asleep, your time having quality sleep, your time in deep sleep, and your sleeping heart rate. You can set goals for each of these, and the rings will compare with your goals, letting you know how well you've done.
There's also a feature to show your sleep bank for the week. This is based on you getting a full eight hours a night. If you sleep less, you'll go into debt, and if you sleep more, you'll have extra credit.
Overall, AutoSleep provides a decent amount of data and you can compare day-to-day to see how your lifestyle affects your sleep. For the one-off charge of $2.99, it's a great value.
Sleep++ is the most basic of the available sleep apps, but it's free to download and has no hidden extra costs. You can choose to have your sleep tracked in auto mode or manual mode. Auto mode will automatically track your sleep, using your movements — or lack thereof — to know when you're in dreamland. If you use manual mode, you'll have to tell the app when you're going to sleep and when you wake up. Press "Start Sleeping" and then "Stop Sleeping" on your Apple Watch or in the iPhone app.
You won't get much data from this app, just one bar showing you how deep your sleep was. However, it's totally free and a great place to start your sleep-tracking routine.
Sleep Cycle has the unique feature of a built-in alarm with a "Wake up phase," that automatically wakes you up at the optimal time, based on your sleep pattern. Set the time you need to wake up by, and the app will wake you (using haptic vibrations on your watch) up to 30 minutes before, when you're in your lightest phase of sleep. You can adjust that time frame in the app if you want a longer window of time before you're woken up.
If you buy the paid version (you get a 1-month trial to test it out first!), you'll unlock premium features, like a sleep aid to provide you with soothing sounds, weather alerts when you wake up, and heart rate monitoring.
Although the features may be better than the other apps, you won't receive a data analysis of your sleep cycle.
SleepWatch provides the most data of any of the tested apps, but you'll have to buy a membership to make the most of it, as well as receive heart rate comparisons and comprehensive sleep analyses. The paid membership will give you a numeric value for your quality of sleep — think of it as your sleep credit score!
You'll also get data based on your sleep patterns, a ratio of light-to-restful sleep, and your heart rate. You can view this data on your Apple Watch, as well as on the mobile app.
You can set your sleep goal and adjust the sensitivity of the sleep detection. The Smart Bedtime Reminder is another paid feature that will remind you to go to sleep at a certain time to improve your sleep rhythm. If you love to analyze data and see how changing your lifestyle can affect your sleep, then this is the app for you.

A Quebec couple won US$750,000 in the lottery after finding a winning ticket that had been forgotten in a book for months, the province’s Loto-Quebec organisation said on Wednesday.
Nicole Pedneault and Roger Larocque only realized last weekend that they had a winning ticket from an April 5, 2018 drawing.
While looking through a book about Japan to help her grandson with a school project, Pedneault noticed something had fallen from the pages. It was a lottery ticket the couple had bought for Valentine’s Day last year.
“If my grandson had not asked me to give him some things for his presentation, I would not have ever found the ticket,” Pedneault said.
“The first thing I did when I found the ticket in the book was go look at the deadline for claiming winnings on the Loto-Quebec website,” she said.
The ticket was still valid, but not for long – only until Friday.
“It’s all just by chance that we found it at the last minute like that,” the winner said as she claimed her check.

Indonesia may temporarily shut an island that is home to komodo dragons in a bid to fix problems created by mass tourism and thwart attempts to smuggle the world's biggest lizard, the local tourism agency said Thursday.
The proposed closure, which is awaiting central government approval, would start from 2020 but does not apply to nearby islands where the giant, slavering carnivores are also found, the agency said.
Thousands of tourists annually descend on the cluster of islands in the eastern part of the sprawling archipelago nation -- the only place in the world where komodo dragons can be seen in their natural habitat.
Komodo Island is home to some 2,300 dragons, which can grow to around three metres (10 feet) in length. An adult typically weighs from 70 to 90 kilograms (150 to 200 pounds).
"Mass tourism is already happening on Komodo Island and it's really disturbing," local tourism agency head Marius Ardu Jelamu told AFP.
"When there are too many tourists in sensitive areas like Komodo National Park, the dragons can be adversely affected," he added.
Jakarta has agreed in principle to temporarily shutter the national park, Jelamu said.
During the proposed closure, conservationists would work to rehabilitate endemic plants and boost the number of deer, boars and other natural prey.
"We want Komodo Island to be like the Galapagos islands... so we need to rehabilitate the flora and fauna," Jelamu said.
The move would also include tighter visitor quotas and a new ticketing system that would require tourists to book online ahead of time rather than paying on the spot.
Last year, the provincial governor sparked a controversy when he proposed charging visitors $500 to see the dragons, about 50 times the current entrance fee.
Security would be tightened to prevent bids to smuggle the endangered lizard, Jelamu said Thursday.
Last week, police in East Java foiled an attempt to smuggle five komodo dragons, and arrested a group of traffickers linked to the case.
Those dragons were not smuggled from the national park, however, according to the environment ministry.

The United States Congress has voted to end American involvement in the Yemen war, rebuffing the Trump administration's support for the military campaign led by Saudi Arabia.
The bill now heads to President Donald Trump, who's expected to veto it. The White House says the bill raises "serious constitutional concerns". It's the first time Congress has invoked the decades-old War Powers Resolution to try and stop a foreign conflict.
The chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee New York Rep. Eliot Engel says Congress “is no longer going to ignore its constitutional obligations when it comes to foreign policy".
The Yemen war is in its fifth year. Thousands have been killed and millions are on the brink of starvation, creating what the United Nations calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

The boys who were stranded in a flooded Thai cave complex last July were given ketamine to prevent them from panicking during their risky rescue.
Ketamine is primarily used as a horse tranquilizer, but also has human medical applications, and was used during the rescue as a relatively simple way to anesthetize the teens as professional divers guided them out of tight cave paths one by one, the New England Journal of Medicine reported Thursday.
The 12 soccer players and their coach were stuck in the Thuam Lung cave complex in northern Thailand after it flooded during a monsoon, blocking the only exit.
Trapped for 17 days without food or water, they group were at risk if running out of oxygen, or drowning in rising flood waters.
Narrow passageways with strong currents made it so hard for rescuers to reach the boys that a retired Thai Navy Seal died while making the crossing. It was important that the boys, none of whom knew how to dive, remained calm throughout the carefully planned rescue operation.
The divers administered the boys with "unspecified doses of ketamine" and gave them positive pressure full face masks, the medical report said.
According to the World Health Organization, ketamine can be a safer option than other anesthetics because it does not depress breathing or lower blood pressure. It also does not require expensive equipment to monitor the patient, so it is often used in areas with unreliable access to running water, electricity, and oxygen.
Dr. Richard Harris, an Australian anesthetist who contributed to the report, told the Daily Mail he had to teach rescuers when to re-sedate the boys. The timing was crucial: If they received too little, they could panic. If they were rendered unconscious, they might not have been able to respond to an emergency.
"The fact that our rescue strategy worked, and not just once but 13 times, still seems beyond the realms of possibility and I'm pinching myself that this has been the outcome," Dr. Harris said.

The Taliban launched a brazen attack under the cover of darkness early on Thursday on an Afghan government compound in western Badghis province, killing at least 20 soldiers and policemen, officials said.
It was the latest attack by the Taliban who target Afghan forces on a daily basis even as they hold talks with a United States peace envoy. Fighting continued into the day and early afternoon in Badghis, and officials expressed fears the casualty tolls would be much higher.
According to Mohammad Nasir Nazari, a provincial council member, the “massive attack” in Badghis took place before dawn, targeting the local government's headquarters in the district of Bala.
The Taliban first stormed all the security posts around the compound. The attack put the lives of some 600 members of the security forces deployed there at risk, he added. Jamshid Shahabhi, spokesman for the Badgis governor, said intense fighting was still underway on Thursday afternoon.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yousf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement to the media.
The attack came as US peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad was heading to Islamabad for talks with Pakistani officials after visiting Kabul where he lobbied for "intra-Afghan dialogue" talks that would encompass prominent Afghan figures, government representatives and the opposition, as well as the Taliban.
Khalilzad has held several rounds of talks with the Taliban, most recently last month in Qatar where both sides said progress has been made.
But despite the talks, the Taliban still inflict staggering casualties on Afghan forces and now hold sway over half of the country. The insurgents refuse to talk directly with the government in Kabul, considering it a US puppet.
In other developments on Thursday, a bombing at a clinic in the city of Puli Khumri, the capital of northern Baghlan province, killed a doctor and wounded 18 civilians, according to Javed Basharat, spokesman for the province's police chief. Two children and a woman were among the wounded.
In eastern Nangarhar province, a sticky bomb attached to a mini bus wounded five people, said police official Zaman, who, like many Afghans, uses only one name. No militant groups immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks in Baghlan and Nangarhar.
In Kabul, the country's intelligence agency the National Directorate of Security (NDS) said its officers arrested at least six suspected members of the militant Islamic State group trying to recruit young Afghans for attacks through social media.
The statement also said the NDS arrested 10 members of IS with 250 kilogrammes of explosives in eastern Nangarhar province.
