lots of people say Emil is smiling in this picture. I don't think so, here's why.

I see a lot of articles from the time / users describing this image as "one last f you to the audience," they say he's smiling in a victorious way as if to show he won.

I think that's not true for several reasons- for one, no matter how much of an ego you have, if you've just been wounded 29+ times you probably wouldn't be in the mood to act triumphant. In fact, you'd probably be making a lot of pained faces.

I think it's more likely that the photo shows a grimace instead, considering the pain he was in and the fact that his face was on asphalt for over 10 minutes at that point.

Also, here is a picture of him clearly smiling, compare it to the picture of him on the ground.

Maybe at first glance it looks like a smile, but in my opinion I don't think it is.

I know this is me making a mountain out of a molehill, but maybe one of the four other North Hollywood Shootout fanatics out there will find it interesting.
