Last strecht in Belgium for campaign to protect cultures and traditions of national minorities in EULászló Pesty, the head of the campaign SignItEurope.com, held a press conference on friday 30th of April to explain what the initiative is about. He also wants to make a final effort to collect as many signatures in the heart of Europe as possible, the last week before closure. Pesty is an former Hungarian war correspondent, television producer and video reporter who documented the Eastern European regime changes from 1989. He is the founder of the Gerilla.hu Think tank, the group that is organizing the petition for the rights of national minorities in the European Union. He is also, from his mother’s side, a member of the Sekler community, a Hungarian minority in Romania.

Our collection of signatures is in danger! - Romanian sue against our initiativeIt's so typical of minority hardship that only the launching the European Citizens’ Initiative for national regions needed a lawsuit lasting for years. The European Commission refused to register both initiatives: Minority Safepack and Sign it Europe both had its legal fight with the European Commission. Romania intervened in the lawsuit by the side of the European Commission, while Hungary did the same supporting the organisers. At the end of the legal fight the organisers could register and launch the initiative. However, Romania hasn't give it up and appealed to the Court of Justice of the EU to annul the collection of signatures for the European national regions. This lawsuit will be on the agenda of the the Court of Justice of the EU on April 29.We have collected 1.4 million signatures so far - the limit is 1 million.We have reached the minimal threshold in 10 countries - the limit is 7 countries.What can you doFollow our Facebook page for being up-to-date! The first Earth Day – April 22, 1970 – is sometimes said to have marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement.
