dr dre - compton

verdict: A

a victory lap sixteen years in the making. while it’s far from dre’s best album or even half of what he’s capable of producing, he proves that he can make a “contemporary hip-hop record” with seemingly effortless ease. 

detractors will say that this is over-produced, that it’s no chronic or 2001, and honestly they’re not entirely wrong – the thing is, it fucking works. we’re left with a hollywood-tinged, big-budget action movie view of dre’s compton, of the sound he pioneered as he reflects on a three-decade career, and while it isn’t without a few moments where the dust collects in the corners – cameos from ice cube and eminem fail to connect in a way that matters, violence against women remains an overused (if dramatically reduced) trope – the album is still replete with moments of genius. 

From production on songs like “Genocide,” “Darkside,” and “Satisfiction,” to myriad newcomer features from the likes of Anderson .Paak and King Mez, to the most visceral skits I’ve heard on an album since Dre’s last full-length, Compton declines the first-class ticket for a private jet to consideration for album of the year. 

It’s not that this is Dre’s best – it isn’t. It’s that he made the best and most shocking hip-hop album ever made, twice, and that he doesn’t need to make Detox to prove he did so. Taken at face-value, which is the big-budget Hollywood version of Dre’s body of work we’re about to get more of on the back of Straight Outta Compton, Compton is an effortlessly replayable and enjoyable record that shows growth and maturation for the west coast’s finest. 

It’s not at all that this is Dre at his best – it’s that Dre at 50% can drown out the rest of the game on 110%.
