I had gone to Fred Myer with my mom the day before Mother's Day because she wanted to get new flowers for one of our flowerbeds and also some new flowers to plant. I do enjoy flowers, a lot, but I realized that we rarely get many butterflies flying through unless it's Thanatos sending one just to get my attention so he can say hi. However, since Milkweed plants attract butterflies and other pollinators, we had got one.
Here's the issue with pre-grown Milkweeds you can buy at stores; most stores if you don't want to go to a plant nursery or don't have one close by likely sell Tropical Milkweed. Which we bought. It wasn't flowered yet (thankfully).
Tumblr media
Something that people aren't aware of is that Tropical Milkweed is harmful to Monarch Butterflies.
National Wildlife Federation
The NWF link brings you to their main website while the other is their Garden for Wildfire website.
Garden for Wildlife
If anyone is planning on making a devotional garden for Thanatos, besides Poppies, milkweed is a good plant for him, but there's also the common milkweed and swamp milkweed which are different colors.
If you want you can plant this flower for anyone else (especially those who accept animal conservation as an act of devotion) and not just for Thanatos.

Hello! I was looking through your blog and saw this and I felt that reblogging would be more appropriate due to the limit with post comments.
As someone who works a bit too closely with Thanatos, who I am assuming is now looking over my shoulder or was for a moment, he is actually rather understanding about things like that. He may seem a bit hesitant at first but as long as you explain your reasons for not being able to keep up with him and assure him that it has nothing to do with him (example being the fact that he had instantly became hesitant the first time I interacted with him due to feeling that he was overwhelming me due to my sensitivity to spiritual presences but calmed down once I explained it wasn't his fault) he's likely to relax and allow you to go at your own pace.
I'm unsure the type of relationships you have with your current Patron Deities (if it's mostly worship or devotional or if it's more friendly and casual), but as long as you're open and honest with Thanatos about your own personal comforts and needs he'll do his best to accommodate to it. I will warn you that if you end up developing a rather close relationship with him he's likely to become protective, at least from my experiences with him.
My blog has either reblogs of posts about Thanatos or my own posts about him. Reblogged posts and my own posts have the tag #thanatos worship while my personal posts about him will have #thanatos devotee
I’m kind of feeling this sort of pull to Lord Thanatos. I have for awhile, and I’ve always been quite intrigued by him, but.. I don’t want to start something I won’t be able to keep up with. I already have enough trouble trying to keep up with Lord Apollon and Lord Hypnos. I wish my mental health would improve faster.

Bought 6 candles today, Thanatos picked one with a butterfly on it, and then tried to burn me before I could even light the candle and the candle was literally RIGHT next to me. Be careful when you have a deity who becomes excited over getting their own candle that fits their preferences (Thanatos doesn't like candles that have a really strong scent), otherwise you might accidently get burned, but then again I used a match since I have weak little hands and sometimes can't get a flame to spark on our lighters.

Other than that, play around a bit with different types of offerings and figure out what he likes, I've only offered him dark chocolate which was also torture to myself since I enjoy it as well, but thankfully he was understanding that I mean no disrespect if I ended up eating it (which I did), though now I have two bags of dark chocolate I got for Easter just sitting in my room unopened.

As soon as I had reached out to Thanatos through my Tarot he answered almost immediately, however as someone who had only done a reading once and correctly translated Hestia's message to a friend who was confused on what she was trying to say I am not good with any other Tarot spread as the friend had used a custom spread that was similar in layout to a Yes/No spread. The type of spread I use is the Yes/No spread, where you lay out five (5) cards with Major Arcana and even number Minor Arcana being for "yes" and the Suits and odd numbered Minor Arcana being "no". Personally I prefer this as it's easier for me to understand with my silly little Autistic brain.
The first thing I did after connecting with him through Tarot was actually ask him how he was doing, I don't know why I chose to ask him that, but I said "yes is for if you're doing good, and no is for if you aren't" and then placed out my cards. His answer to me was "No" with a hidden message within the cards in order to explain to me that something didn't go well that day and he was upset, to which I replied with an apology for the fact he was feeling upset and then I asked him if he'd like to just hangout and sit with me the rest of the day, his answer was a yes and as soon as he answered I began crying. I'm naturally sensitive to the presences of beings that aren't exactly within our plane of existence; such as ghosts, spirits, demons, and deities, it's just with everything else besides deities I get a shortness of breath but all presences give me that same sort of tingly feeling one might get when they look down from somewhere up high or are in an elevator and it's going up/down.
From that single interaction alone I've learned that Thanatos is a rather kind individual and enjoys interacting with others. I always thought he was more of a reserved and quiet individual as one may think Death to be, and while he is rather quiet he's far from reserved. The best way to explain him is someone who wants to be around others but can easily become a bit anxious if he feels as if he's making the person uncomfortable and depending on his mood he can become rather introverted. If you feel like he's possibly becoming anxious over something the first time interacting with you, especially if you're as sensitive as I am to the presence of other beings, the best thing to do is reassure him that it's alright and he doesn't have to limit his interactions with you. I had told him near the end of the day that from now on he can come and hangout whenever he wants without me getting his attention first, but he instantly became unsure and worried that he'd overwhelm me due to my sensitivity. Thankfully he calmed down after I explained to him that I'm not overwhelmed and explained my sensitivity to him.
I've only seen him twice in some dreams, the first time he had gotten lost in it (as my dreams are chaotic and I can't control them if they choose to shift to something else) after like 10-20 minutes into the dream, but from that first appearance, he chose to appear as a mix of how he really looks like and the design of the character Thanatos from the game Hades. Turns out, after asking him about it the next day, he had chosen to appear that way just to mess with me and to be funny. Second dream I remember nothing about other than the fact he was there looking normal. Third dream he wasn't there but at the end of it he did send some butterflies in order to say hello.
Normally, Thanatos doesn't need to try and reach out to me, he's done so once through a butterfly, a few days after our dog had passed away but that was just to say hi and for no other reason. I had also drawn the Death Tarot, which was reversed but there was no hidden message. He seems content enough to come and sit with me without me knowing or to watch over me, plus most the time I'm the one suddenly getting his attention by talking to him at random and he's fully aware that due to my Autism and ADHD I wont exactly go and grab my Tarot to talk to him and is content with just listening, dealing with me being extremely random, or, something he did yesterday (28th) and yesterday night (27th) was sit directly next to me on my bed and lean in extremely close just to stare at my laptop screen. I'm unsure if he was trying to comfort me after Hecate scared the fuck out of me with a spider because I was paranoid and refused to sleep at all even after coming to an agreement that no more spiders will be sent into my bedroom with Hecate.
Based on that interaction, I feel as if Thanatos can become rather protective over people he's taken a liking to, his presence itself being rather warm, comforting, sometimes it's enough to make me feel like crying because suddenly all my anxieties, everything is just gone and I feel as if I don't have to worry about anything. Sometimes I'm unsure if I'm smelling lavender or some other floral scent, or even chamomile, which sometimes makes me think he's literally gone and gotten into my teas. I believe at times he's also gone and woken up Hypnos some nights just in order to get me to sleep. While writing this, I've felt warmth against my ear, cheek, felt peaceful, I smell a familiar scent that smells floral of some sort, so another thing is that Thanatos also seems to be rather curious once he's gotten used to someone. Although, as I don't find many people talking about their interactions with him, and based on how he told me that no one had ever really offered to let him just hangout whenever he wants with them before, I have a feeling that a lot of this is actually Thanatos feeling as if he is free to just be himself and that he's in a safe place because when I interact with him I don't see him as Death itself or as a literal Greek God/Deity, instead I treat him as if he's just like anyone else, I don't reach out to him for advice or help, I reach out to him because I genuinely enjoy interacting with him and I'm one of those few people who aren't afraid of death or dying, at least, not the concept of dying, as I would never do anything that actually puts me at a risk of death out of fear of being forgotten and also because I want to enjoy life as much as I can before it comes naturally.
I've also had a natural affinity towards death and the concept of an afterlife and Gods of Death, so to me, Death is a friend and is my friend, which I believe is why Thanatos interacts differently with me.

Thanatos
Tumblr media
So, now that I have this tumblr blog set up for myself, I wanted to share some things that have happened to me. I've seen people on here post about how Thanatos has come to them in a dream, and that's something I have experienced at least perhaps three times? The first time he had chosen to appear looking very similar to the design of the character from the game Hades; his skin tone around the same, the same exact outfit, except he was still also how he's described in Greek texts and legends; with black hair and black feathered wings. I had asked him through tarot the next day if he had done that on purpose as a way to kind of make it obvious to me who he was or just decided to do so to mess with me, in which his answer was that he had done so just to mess with me. The second time he came to me in a dream, I literally don't remember anything that happened, I just remember him being there looking like himself but in an outfit that I tried my best to replicate through drawing. Third time he came to me in a dream, he wasn't actually there, but at the end of the dream I just remember some butterflies coming over to me and landing on me and my instant reaction in the dream was to go; "Hi Than!" in response.
Thanatos does actually try to avoid my dreams, which is kind of sad because a lot of the times I'm lacking motivation to grab my Tarot and interact with him through them, and my Autism and ADHD doesn't help with that either and I've told him he can try and interact with me through dreams. It's just, my dreams have always been a chaotic mess; I could be dreaming about Minecraft and then the next thing I know it's no longer Minecraft related and I'm suddenly somewhere else. Thanatos literally had gotten lost within my first dream in no less than 10 minutes.
Either way, my art style is obviously a bit far from realistic, but yeah, Thanatos is a pretty boy and he knows it.

I need to remind myself to find more stuff for the Persephone and Hades shared altar, I could make one for Artemis too, but since I already basically decorate the area with nature stuff, I think if I tried to make an altar for her it'd be a bit of a mess. I like to think that our pasture is our altar for her since we do get deer naturally passing through. Anyways I had reblogged someone and posted old screenshots of my Thanatos altar, but now I get to show the slight changes as well as the Hades and Persephone altar.
But here's the link to the original thing.

How to pray to the chthonic gods 🪦 🌒
Position
When praying to underworld deities, we should direct our prayers downwards. An example of this is seen in the ninth scroll of the Iliad when Althaea prays to Haides and dread Persephone by kneeling and beating her hands on the ground. Whereas women wore their hair up or covered for ouranic rituals, they wore their hair down in chthonic rituals. The prayer should be murmured.
Offerings
Chthonic Theoi received special nighttime offerings of black animals, unmixed wine and special libations of milk and honey. Animal sacrifice was always done in a holókaustos--a sacrifice where the entire animal was burned and none of the meat was saved for human consumptions.
Homer in the Odyssey writes Circe advising Odysseus how to perform a libation to the dead:
"Draw near then, as I bid you, hero, and dig a trench two feet square, then pour a libation all around to the dead, first of milk and honey, then of sweet wine, thirdly of water, sprinkled with white barley meal."
Prayer format
The format is the same as when praying to any other theoi: Invoke the god, introduce yourself, make an argument as to why they should listen to you, and make a request .
Who are the underworld deities?
- Haides, King of the underworld
- Persephone, Queen of the underworld
- Hecate, Goddess of magic
- Thanatos, God of death
- Hermes Athanatus Diactorus, the chtonic aspect of Hermes in which he guides souls to the underworld
- Nyx, primordial Goddess of the night
- Hypnos, God of sleep
- Charon, ferryman of the dead
- Cerberus, guardian of the underworld
- The Furies, goddesses of vengeance and retribution

Maiden / Mother / Crone Goddesses
In both Wicca and Witchcraft, there is an archetype of the Triple Goddess. The three archetypes - Maiden, Mother and Crone - are used to represent different aspects of life, particularly the lives of women. While it has had some controversy associated with it, it's still a popular way of grouping folkloric goddesses by similarities in theme.
However, as this system is not entirely perfect, generally viewing women and goddesses through the eyes of men, I've decided to merge it with another common set of archetypes - Goddesses of Life, Death and Regeneration. It's the same basic idea, but without the reliance on visual appeal and such. I hope we're all fine with that.
So, without further ado, here's a general list of goddesses grouped by archetype:

Text
When you step into sunlight, you honor Apollo. When you admire the moon, you honor Artemis. When you admire cloud shapes, you honor Hera. When you smell petrichor, you honor Zeus. When you laugh at a joke, you honor Hermes. When your body twitches to dance at a particularly upbeat music, you honor Dinoysus. When you enjoy the first bite of your breakfast, you honor Demeter. When you choose your peace over any conflict, you honor Athena. When you warm yourself up by sheltering yourself in blanket, you honor Hestia. When you listen to Ocean sounds, you honor Poseidon. When you smell flowers, you honor Persephone. When you admire the coolness of first day of Autumn, you honor Hades. When you wear your favourite jewellery, you honor Hephaestus. When you smile, you honor Aphrodite. When you exercise, you honor Ares. When you light a torch in a dark room, you honor Hekate.
Your body is a shrine to Gods, your being an act of devotion for them. You, by yourself, are enough for them.

Offerings to Persephone
With the fact that Persephone prodded me a few months ago, and I’ve get to figure out why, I thought it might be useful to take a look into offerings for her. Bats have been particularly fond of flying over my head lately, while I’ve been turning over this idea, so I’m taking it as encouragement. Below is a list of offerings, both from research and a bit of personal speculation/UPG. If there’s something more anyone thinks of, please feel free to let me know or add on.
Offerings to Persephone:
Pomegranate, and pomegranate flavored/derived things (ex. Pomegranate Wine)
Asphodel
Lilies/Poppies/Roses
Spring Flowers/Wildflowers
Wreath of Flowers
Mints (Lemon Balm, Spearmint, Peppermint) [Mint should be torn, smashed, boiled, or otherwise destroyed]
Bat shaped items/imagery
Ram shaped items/imagery
Wheat/Barley/Grains
Parsley
Black/White Poplar
Weeping Willow
Cypress
Incense (particularly sweet or floral scents)
Honey/Honey Wine
Infused Waters (herb or fruit infused)
