Questo è il punto più bello e terribile dell’Islanda. Lo sguardo non ha ostacoli, abbraccia una distanza infinita, e in ogni direzione ci sono solo montagne di terra così scure da sembrare blu e macchie di ghiaccio che resistono ancora al disgelo, e striature di zolfo, e neanche il minimo segno di una presenza umana. Ed è strano, mentre il vento gelido vi incolla addosso i vestiti, appoggiare la mano al suolo e sentirlo caldo. In questo luogo così elementare vi sforzerete di elevarvi, di essere spirituali, penserete all’anima: dove se non qui? Ma non c’è traccia di spirito, solo materia, è ridicola anche la più remota idea di trascendenza, uno pensa ai suoi morti e capisce che sono spariti.
