Writing Crime
Anonymous asked: I’m doing crime fiction in school and have to write a short story, but I’ve never written crime before and I don’t really know how. Do you have any tips? Maybe something on writing action scenes, creating suspense, and leaving clues? Thanks for any help you can give me!

I'm writing a story and I feel like I'm more telling than showing. I try to fix it but I'm have difficulty because most of what I'm writing is dialogue and actions. And everything I find about showing vs telling is about settings and character personality. Not really sure what I'm asking but if you could help that'd be fantastic.
My show don’t tell tag.
My descriptive writing tag.
My post about storytelling around/without dialogue.
Hope something in there helps!

Hi! I was just wondering, what's the best way to make/write out a plot?
Guide: How to Outline a Plot
The best way to write out a plot isn’t the same for everyone, and sometimes it’s even different from story to story. There are lots of different methods, and most writers use a combination of them, so you just have to try different things to see what works best for you. Here are some of the most common methods:
1. Just Write
Some writers are what’s known as “pansters” meaning that once they have a story idea in mind, they prefer to “fly by the seat of their pants” and start writing without any planning in place. The key to making this method work is to remember that you’re only writing the first draft. Nothing you’re doing is set in stone, so don’t feel the story has to be perfect in one shot. Follow your gut and write the story to the best of your ability. Worry about tightening and polishing in subsequent drafts.
2. Synopsis
Some writers prefer to start by writing beginning to end summary of the story, describing all the important details and events in the order that they unfold. Summaries can be a great way to flesh out an idea for a plot, and they can also serve as a nice guideline if you want to “just write” your story but need a bit more structure first.
3. Old-Fashioned Outline
Do they still teach outlining in school? I don’t even know… when I was a kid, we learned how to do outlines with Roman numerals for the main points, capital letters for the minor points, and numbers for sub-points. If you’re good at outlining, this can be a great way to outline your plot.
4. Timeline
Creating a timeline for your story can be a great way to map it out. All you need is a beginning event, climax event, and end event. From there you can start filling in the events that follow and precede those events. Even if you don’t know the exact date for when a scene takes place, you can still mark it down in the right general place.
5. Scene List
If you have a pretty good idea of the scenes that need to take place, or at least a good number of them, you can start by writing out a scene list. It’s nice to do them in a table if you can so you can organize important details, like chapter, scene number, date and location, who’s in it, and then a short summary. Though, how you organize it is up to you. If you prefer, you can just write the scene number and then a brief summary.
6. Story Structure Map
Some writers like to map out their story according to whatever story structure they want to follow. They’ll pull up a graphic or chart of the structure, transcribe it onto paper or into a document, and then note each relevant event for each structure “mile marker.”
7. Subway/Tube Map
This is a new one I recently heard about. I haven’t had a chance to try it yet, but I think it’s fascinating. And there are even subway map creators you can use if you don’t want to draw it out. Ultimately, the goal is to map out the events of your story in the style of a subway/tube map. This method makes it easy to illustrate subplots and see how they relate to the rest of your story.
8. The Mind Map
Mind maps can be a fantastic way to get the most important parts of your story out on paper, and to start figuring out where other parts fit in and how they relate to everything else.
9. Index Cards
Some writers have luck writing out key scenes, moments, bits of dialogue (or anything else they have in mind) on individual index cards, which can then be laid out in order on a table, allowing for cards to be easily moved around, added, subtracted, etc. until a more complete story starts to emerge. Some writers even invest in giant cork boards for this purpose. Others use a dry erase board and draw out the “cards” instead. A lot of story writing software, such as Scrivener, even includes digital bulletin boards and index cards that you can use to visualize your story.
10. Method/Theory/Template
There are numerous methods/theories/templates dedicated to building/fleshing out plots. Some to look into:
- The Snowflake Method- Dramatica Theory- Save the Cat! for Novels- The Hero’s Journey
If one of the above doesn’t work for you, you’re sure to find even more ideas online. Try doing a search for “how to outline a plot” or “outlining a novel” to see what comes up. You might even try searching for your favorite author’s name plus “outlining” to see if they’ve done any posts sharing their own methods. You may also want to look into books, software, and apps/web sites that offer ways to help you plot your story.
Good luck!

I made these as a way to compile all the geographical vocabulary that I thought was useful and interesting for writers. Some descriptors share categories, and some are simplified, but for the most part everything is in its proper place. Not all the words are as useable as others, and some might take tricky wording to pull off, but I hope these prove useful to all you writers out there!

Quick Mac-Fic whump
"Of guilt and forgiveness"
(probably unfinished)
________________________________________
#Mac-Fic-Whum
Macgyver 2016, Mac, Jack, Riles... if I continue maybe others...
disclaimer bla-bla not mine etc. (sadly)
Why? Because daydreaming about the Macwhumpee I am obsessed with at the moment is not enough.... need to share it... but might be... crap... especially 'cause I'm no native speaker.
So here goes nothing:
______________________________________
„Jack, it´s me, Mac…“ he held his hands up in a calming but also defensive way.
„Put the knife down. You won´t hurt me.“ He looked deep into the eyes of his partner hoping he would recognise him.
„Jack…“ his eyes were vacant yet burning with fury. They drugged him, told him lies. It was just a matter of time and the proper dosage until his mind was poisoned, reality distorted and lies turned into truth. He was in there too long. It took them too long to find him and now Jack was changed and didn’t recognise his year-long partner. He was under a disgusting spell that made him wanting to hurt his friends. His family.
„Jack, you´re drugged! You don´t want to hurt me, I know that, you would never hurt anyone of us. Snap out of it!“ Mac took a step forward keeping eye-contact but in the same moment Jack moved, raising the knife, ready to strike, eyes bewildered and fury burning within.
Mac managed to dodge just in time „JACK, STOP!“ The men stood still for a moment, both panting. Mac looked around desperately trying to find something he could take out his much stronger friend without actually hurting him… too much.
The room was empty. It was an interrogation room- like setup but without table and chair. Just some chains attached to one side of the wall and a huge mirror on the other side. A massive steel door that was locked a moment ago now lay unhinged on the dirty cold concrete floor. Ther was nothing he could build or construct. Attacking Jack was no option. He was way too strong for Mac and armed. Running was no option either now that they finally found him, he wouldn´t leave him behind. He´d probably run after him anyway, catch up an who know what he would be capable of in this state of mind.
The rest of the team were a few minutes out, all he could do was talk to him, try to „wake“ him up and of course, survive.
„Mac?“ He heard Riley´s voice in the hall outside and in that mere tenth of a second of distraction he lost eye contact with Jack.
Just as Riley turned yround the corner, stepping on the steel door with a few men as backup Jacks eye twitched and he dashed forward.
From a certain angle it looked like Mac took the big mountain of a partner into his arms welcoming him back to reality and soothing the pain and agony from the past few days in captivity.
From another angle, Riley´s angle, you could see that Jack´s hand was stabbing the knife into Macs ribs, blood soaking through and staining the shirt and flowing out on the attackers hands and drippling onto the floor.
„JACK NO“ she shrieked.
Jack blinked a few times and looked around in confusion. Where was he? Why did Riles look so shocked and his hands were so…sticky. Why did Mac hug him? What was going on. He backed away from Mac and saw a shaft of a blade sticking out from Mac’s chest. Mac didn’t move, held his breath. His eyes tearing up and staring into a void.
Jack looked at his hand smeared with blood and made the connection. He looked up into the kids pale face „Mac…no“ he whispered when his young partner tilted forward and collapsed into his arms. Jack lowered themselves onto the floor in disbelieve: „What have I done?“  He looked at Riley tears flowing from his eyes. „What have I done? Mac, buddy, I am so sorry, Mac, Mac, stay with me, please!“ Mac let out a gasp in pain. Jack started to rock the kid not knowing what to do just holding his freind tight. „MEDICS NOW“ je yelled angry, scared, hurting… Mac touched his hand and looked at him with droopy eyes „J’ck,“ he took a ragged breath „s‘ ‚kay“.
Jack just stared through blurry eyes. He didn´t understand what happened and how he could hurt someone he loved.  And how could Mac say it was okay.
Mac’s grip loosened, his hand slumped lifeless to his side, his head tilting onto Jack´s chest not feeling the shaking of his partner´s panicked breaths, not hearing the desperate cries for help, not tasting the hot tears dripping onto his lips.
Mac was drifting away.
