HATING SIM - THE ONE WITH KOUHAI

yknow. Despite Kouhai most likely being the start of my hating sim craze back in 2022 I just..... neglected to talk about him until now? I mentioned him quick in the intro post of Hating Sim, but who exactly are they, other than Senpai's friend?

here's a recent doodle i did of him (5/17/25)! I'll be showing some of his old art in this post as well, just under the cut ^_^! Now. Let's talk Kouhai.

WHO IS KOUHAI?

Kouhai, unlike the other Hating Sim characters mentioned, is an NPC. which....... also may be why he was overshadowed often. Oooopps. But its okay because we're talking abt them now.

Oh yea! I refer to Kouhai by they/he, but in game, he's explicitly referred to as he/him. But I Can Do Anything.

Kouhai only appears in Senpai's route, not even appearing in Seven's route. I'm debating whether he has a few scenes sprinkled in or a couple of them. Just not a lot. In the end, Senpai's route revolves around you and Senpai. Kouhai's rooting for you, though!

You come to know Kouhai as a nerdy, bookish underclassman (probably your grade? Idk but I see him and Senpai the same age) with insomnia AND possibly Senpai's only friend. They seem to be the only one that Senpai doesn't entirely hold in disdain, like he holds the other love interests. I don't think you ever dive deep into Senpai and Kouhai's relationship in the game. It's okay because this is where hating sim fans can shine guys.

KOUHAI IN THE META

Now. Because Kouhai is only a minor character in only ONE route, they tended to be overshadowed in art and fanfiction back then I say. Fucked up. Interestingly, Kouhai is like. the only minor character who gets a distinct sprite, I'd say? Like yes. I think you still see the Background Freaks ingame in some routes, but they're kind of also??? part of me wants to say cookie cutter designed but idk. you can get.

I think Kouhai x Senpai IS one of Senpai's ships in the meta though. As for me personally Kouhai in my mind is arospec n i lean qpr/just besties but either way i really enjoy kouhai and senpai's relationship forever. one day i should talk abt my own thoughts on senpai's sexuality bc i have many (a good few .) thoughts abt it. at the same time I think there's people who think Kouhai + Senpai's relationship is STUPID and BAD!!!! and then GF fucking flames them. KOUHAI OUTSIDE THE BASE GAME

You may have noticed that I haven't mentioned Kouhai's actual name. Or you believe he doesn't have a name since he's a minor name. And you're right! They DON'T have an official name. Fans call him Tomo/Toma (i'm partial to the latter), i.e. in reference to "tomodachi" + Kouhai being Senpai's friend. I also wanna say that outside the base game they do legit have a closer relationship

As mentioned in any posts w Senpai, Senpai is self-aware! One of the very, very few. Kouhai is no exception. I do think that Senpai sometimes gets caught offguard with the Spirit, but luckily people are usually taken in by his charisma. That doesn't mean he always gets off scottfree...

ya. i'm aware that kouhai is referred to as "Toma" here . Writing this I am a little torn btwn him having an actual name since he's a minor char or not. Plus you never really have people actually refer to underclassmen as "kouhai" as a title like Senpai is, as far as I'm researching?? but also they're kind of matching. Much to think about.

anyways moving from this. Toma can tell that something's bothering Senpai, but they can't tell what. They always have Senpai's back! Senpai's like. never getting them involved with that though. He's. Normal.

KOUHAI IN FNF

SO! In the initial creation of Kouhai, I imagined that in the uninterrupted version of Week 6, Kouhai comes in to battle BF! There's also another version where Kouhai comes in and joins Senpai in a duet! maybe gf would've joined bf for that ^_^ butttt. Kouhai ended up being absent due to sickness + the Spirit burst out so. Ya. I wouldn't really say that those two events are related, though...

I don't have any drawings related to this yet, BUT! I always thought of Kouhai being the only other person the Spirit tolerates, most likely because of them being Senpai's friend. Also Kouhai brings them sweets that Senpai usually lets the Spirit have (althought the Spirit has to have them with no one around) so the Spirit may be a little biased. Let him be ok.

KOUHAI'S INITIAL CREATION

i kinda lost what else I wanted to talk about for Kouhai so . i'm just using this to share Kouhai's initial creation in 2022!

I initially created Kouhai being inspired by some other Hating Sim fanart (dont ask what bc i dont remember but i do remember one fanart being bf in the game), but also I really wanted to give Senpai a friend because I love giving comfort chars friends. Yknow Kouhai was also made the same day as Substitute Teacher! ^_^ this is how hating sim and baldis can win guys. Trust. Anyways. Here's their first reference sheet + doodles

I actually forgot some of these points. that's actually so sweet kouhai got inspired by senpai to sing??? THAT'S SO SWEET.

in my head I think bf + gf COULD be ambiamorous but also as a package deal. Like Dave and Jack (<- guy who misses them). Also on one hand I see them being fine w being casual w other people but also they're each others' #1. Theoretically another person could ALSO share thst spot but it would be very rare for someone to reach that spot. Do we hear this
