Cowboy Carter is a mix of country, funk, soul, blues, and gospel. Hell even folk. Beyoncé is a student of music. She is a master of her craft. This album was an EXPERIENCE. This album was a SPIRITUAL JOURNEY.
This ain’t a country album. This is a BEYONCÉ album.
“You simply cannot fit more America into a single incident than a man dying a horrifying death in protest of war crimes while a first responder screams at cops to stop pointing their guns at him and go get fire extinguishers. If you were to pick a single moment in history to sum up the essence and expression of the US empire, that would be it.”
Caitlin Johnstone, The Most American Thing That Has Ever Happened
Scott’s and Theo’s strange journeys to the underworld have clear parallels, as @momentofmemory has shown in her recent gifset. Both are instigated by Kira’s powers, both are repeated scenes that begin in a body locker, and both are described with the language of dreams.
Before Scott goes under, he asks a question (“Time of Death”):
Scott: What happens while I’m out? Am I gonna feel anything?
Noshiko: It might feel like you’re dreaming.
Scott: Good dreams, or bad?
Noshiko: I suppose that’s up to you.
After Theo comes back from underground, he answers one (Memory Found):
Liam: Theo?
Theo: I’m fine. Just, just thought I was somewhere else for a second.
Liam: Where?
Theo: In a bad dream.
Both dreams are up to them, in some sense, shaped by their fears. What’s interesting to me is how similar those fears seem: mirrored versions of the same thing.
a gentle fact about this world is that people will want to help you. a cruel fact about it is that you do have to put on your big boy pants and open their contact on your phone and say some human words to ask them for it
Quinta Brunson just became the second Black actress in Emmys history to win Lead in the Comedy category, 42 years after Isabel Sanford won for The Jefferson.
