David doesn't take his eyes off the map. In fact, he doesn't even really acknowledge that he's been spoken to, more than an involuntary tap in the bond. He keeps squinting down at the atlas, the roadmaps and teeny tiny words littering the page like ants. And just as unable to keep still.

Dwayne watches from the doorway for a few moments. The nest is, wonder upon wonders, quiet. Michael, Marko, and Paul went out for various errands - whether or not most or even some of them would be completed by the end of the night is negligible. The point is, for once in a long time, it's just the two of them. And David had chosen to spend his time giving himself a headache anyway.

Levering himself away from the wall, Dwayne approaches.

The roadmap booklet had been stolen from a local tourist shop. There were road ways listed, as well as major highways, but there was also nature trails, hiking trails, and other paths of interest that most people just coming in from distant cities and towns wouldn't know about, or know very well.

This is there territory now. Best to know it, as well as, or better-than, the people who lived here.

Dwayne frowns a little at being so ignored, and reaches out. Poking at the space between David's eyes, making him jerk. "Hey. Put it away."

David scowls and bats away the hand. "Stop-"

"If you want to go out and trace 'em, we can. Bette than this," Dwayne retorts, running a finger along a trail marked for bikes that circles the base of the mountain. Better to find good lookout spots.

Hiding spots.

Normally, David might agree. But now he just pulls the map closer and tries to refocus on the words.

"Thought you were reading," he says.

Dwayne crosses his arms. "Was. Book's boring."

David glances up. "That's never stopped you before."

"Yeah, well, I don't usually have to work through someone else's frustration, either."

David looks back down, and toys with the edge of one of the pages. His face is flat, pinched. He sits hunched in the chair like if he can just get his face close enough to the small print, it will stamp on his brain.

"Sorry," he growls. "I'll make more of an effort to keep it down."

The edges of the words are sharp, and a wall juts up in the bond. Shoved into place.

Dwayne hums. David doesn't respond.

Dwayne reaches down and rips the map from under David's hands.

"Dwayne-!"

"You could make an Olympic sport out of beating heads against brick walls," Dwayne says over him, waving the atlas around in one hand, stepping back as David gets up to follow after. Dwayne doesn't let him get too close, keeping just out of arm's reach, dancing back and using a little levitation to keep light on his feet.

"And you would win the gold for finding more ways than anyone else to be an annoying motherfucker just to get your own way," David retaliates.

Dwayne raises an eyebrow, mouth quirking into a taunting grin. "Oh, don't let Paul hear you say that."

The memories of the lengths Paul would indeed go to just to retain the title of the more irritating of them for fun or profit makes them both groan.

David pauses, eyeing Dwayne over, and Dwayne waits, content as anything to see what David plans to do. Then, David raises a hand to his head, a knuckle digging into his forehead. The pain isn't bad yet, but now that he's not trying so hard to distract himself, it radiates out in a way not even the mental wall can truly silence.

"C'mon," Dwayne says. "Anything's better than this."

He tosses the map down onto the large collection of blankets, pillows and mattresses that make up their sleeping space. David follows it with tired eyes.

"For my health?" He snarks.

Dwayne shrugs. "And my sanity."

"Oh," David intones with a rolls of his eyes, "wouldn't want to compromise that. You have so much to lose."

"More than some people," Dwayne shoots back. But it works. David is moving to grab up his coat, and Dwayne does the same.

The night is young. Plenty of time to add their own marks to the map.

Horses and oxen!

Did you know that horses are still used for logging? Not just as a way to keep traditional handicrafts alive, but because horses are genuinely better at some jobs than machines?

Horses are much gentler on sensitive ecosystems, they're more flexible in rocky terrain, and they don't topple over on a hillside.

They can enter dense forests and drag out one specific tree without damaging the other trees and without compacting or eroding the soil.

They also run on hay instead of gas or electricity. Horses don't pollute the ecosystem with either oil leaks, gas stench, or noise.

So I went to an antique show and found these couple of tapestries. They’re not exact replicas of what Marko has on his jacket but they’re similar colors! Got them for $1 a piece so I couldn’t say no. I’ll chop them up for a jacket once I get a base. I like horses and deer better than partially naked women and peacocks anyway lol. I think I’ll need one more to have enough fabric so I’ll keep an eye out
