I'm halfway through a rewatch of "Daria," which was one of my favorites back in the late 90s. It's still witty, and relevant, and absolutely entertaining to watch. And even though I'm nearly thirty years older and wiser than I was when I first developed a crush on Trent Lane, I completely understand why I did. And why many millennial women STILL harbor their old Trent crush.
Tumblr media
When we first meet her, Daria Morgendorffer is a sixteen year-old high school student who wields cynicism like a weapon and purposely acts unpleasant as a defense mechanism. Trent Lane is the twenty-one year-old brother of Daria's best friend Jane. He's an underemployed slacker in a terrible metal band who can't be trusted to meet deadlines, but he's stupidly hot, incredibly kind, and the one source of stability in Jane's life.
Thus, Daria has a massive crush on him for a solid three seasons.
And I firmly believe that Trent's PERFECT handling of Daria's crush is 90% of the reason why so many people my age are still drawn to him after all these years.
Some argue that Trent didn't know how Daria felt about him, and thus his kindness is actually just obliviousness. Except he definitely knew. If Daria's blushing and rashes and Jane's not-at-all-subtle comments didn't give it away, we are directly shown that Trent knows in "That Was Then, This Is Dumb."
Here's the dialogue:
JANE: Why are you staring at my brother? DARIA: Selfless concern. I think he stopped breathing. JANE: Nah, he's entering a dormant stage. In about ten years he'll emerge as a butterfly. [Pause.] And I guess you're gonna wait.
Look at Trent's face at the end of this exchange:

So yeah, Trent knows about Daria's crush. He breaks the fourth wall to tell us.
And what does he do with this information?
He buys her a soda and listens to her vent about her family. He doesn't make it weird.
Later in the series, Trent continues to be a friend and unlikely voice of reason for Daria. He reads the room and avoids situations that might embarrass her, most notably during her ill-fated job selling nuts. He dates age-appropriate women. He makes it clear in the most complimentary way possible that Daria is not an age-appropriate woman for him to date. He expresses genuine fondness for Daria while never leading her on romantically*. He never infantilizes her or invalidates her feelings. And by the final season, he's arguably the most emotionally intelligent character in the entire ensemble. Trent might be an unreliable burnout, but his advice and insights are consistently solid. Especially in later seasons when he repeatedly steps in to smooth over the Tom mess with both Daria and Jane.
The creators could have VERY easily turned Trent into a creep willing to take advantage of Daria's inexperience. But instead, they illustrated a perfect gentleman, and the model of how every high schooler SHOULD expect a cute older guy to behave around them.
Looking back, I feel so fortunate that "Daria" had such a profound effect on my formative years. I was a young teenager when it first aired. I related to Daria. A lot. Still do, actually. And what did the show teach me to view as normal behavior if my 16 year-old self developed a crush on a 21 year-old?
Respect. Friendship. And no reciprocation.
Moreover, with Tommy Sherman, "Daria" goes out of its way to show that it IS creepy and inappropriate when someone Trent's age hits on high schoolers.
I'm so glad that the relationship between Daria and Trent was such a big part of my teen years, because it was absolutely perfect exactly the way it was. Unrequited yet kind was 100% the correct move with these two characters.** And they taught my young self valuable lessons about the type of respect and emotional intelligence I should expect from men. Especially hot men.
*Because it always comes up: yes, "Pierce Me," when Trent convinces Daria to get a navel ring so he can get a half-price deal on his own piercing, is commonly cited as an outlier where Trent does take advantage of Daria's crush. But I'm willing to let it slide for three reasons. First of all, the episode treats piercing as a sex metaphor -- and at this point in the series, Daria was overdue for some typical-girl-problem growth. It was an important character maturity moment for her, and Trent was the perfect catalyst for her pseudo-awakening. Second, if this is a sex metaphor, Trent is a conscientious lover; he holds her hand, makes sure her first time doesn't hurt, and ensures she's not embarrassed afterwards. And lastly, I can easily believe that Trent really was all about snagging that two-for-one deal on the piercings. He might be emotionally intelligent, but he's also cheap and broke.
**I have to admit: a tiny sliver of my heart hopes that Daria and Trent were able to have one ill-advised hookup in their late 20s that they then laugh about well into middle age. I might be a realist, but I'm also still shipper trash.

I was CRYING watching Roger's documentary when in the locker room after the match Rafa clearly said "fucking Tiafoe" (who had just beaten him and Roger) and Prime's subtitles put "indistinct" instead of his name, like WE BOTH KNOW YOU KNOW WHAT HE SAID DON'T CENSOR HIM
Rafa was going through it™ that day, I swear EVERYONE was catching strays
