The Canadian Association of Nigerian Physicians and Dentists is launching the first Black health journal in Canada. The Canadian Nigerian Medical Journal serves as a place where diagnoses, targeted treatments, and ongoing research are shared as they pertain to the Black community, with the goal of improving health outcomes for Black Canadians. The launch took place this weekend in Edmonton, and the journal's editor-in-chief, Dr. Moses Ademola, hopes it will serve as a platform for unique insights and contributions from the Black medical community.

The City of Atlanta Georgia has decided to demolish the research and conservation center of the Amphibian Foundation. This organization works tirelessly to conserve the Frogs, Toads, Salamanders, Newts, and other amphibians in the United States. In addition, they provide key education for herpetologists on the care, conservation, and preservation of reptiles and amphibians.
This emergency need is compounded by the government mass firing of conservation officials and the pulling of funds from many of the country's conservation organizations.
If you can help please donate here:
Key points from the Amphibian Foundation.
Our building will be demolished in 2026, and we need to identify a new location (or locations) for 7 labs and over 1,000 animals, many of which are endangered and part of critical conservation programs.
We've identified a new location for most of AF, but not our research and conservation programs. We have an amazing lead, but it's not confirmed yet.
Our first fundraising project is the AF Emergency Fund as the minimum cost estimates to move this many labs and animals safely is $50,000. (It costs about 50 USD per animal to move them)

Algal growth is accelerating in lakes across Canada, including those far from human development, and a new study shows that climate change is the primary driver. A research team led by scientists at McGill University and Université Laval examined lake sediment cores from 80 lakes across Canada to uncover long-term changes in algae levels. The study, published in Communications Earth & Environment, reveals a dramatic uptick in lake algae production since the 1960s.

An epidemic that's been sustained for 44 years might finally be quelled, with the milestone approval of the first HIV drug that offers 100% protection with its twice-yearly injections. It's a landmark achievement that stands to save millions of lives across the globe. The makers are also providing affordable access to the drug in the US and beyond, signing royalty-free licensing agreements with six generic manufacturers to produce and supply it. In the US, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the novel lenacapavir – sold under the brand name Yeztugo – a class of drugs known as capsid inhibitors, which provide almost 100% protection against HIV infection, which currently affects 1.3 million people every year. In 2024, the journal Science named lenacapavir the Breakthrough Invention of the Year, and we've extensively covered it on its way to market. The pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) provides HIV-negative individuals around 99% protection from contracting the devastating virus through sex.

Researchers led by Gen Kurosawa at the RIKEN Center for Interdisciplinary Theoretical and Mathematical Sciences (iTHEMS) in Japan have used theoretical physics to discover how our biological clock maintains a consistent 24-hour cycle—even as temperatures change. They found that this stability is achieved through a subtle shift in the "shape" of gene activity rhythms at higher temperatures, a process known as waveform distortion. This process not only helps keep time steady but also influences how well our internal clock synchronizes with the day-night cycle. The study was published in PLOS Computational Biology .

An international study led by the University of Liège proposes a new map of the potential for natural vegetation on Earth, far beyond forests. By incorporating the role of fire and herbivores, researchers are paving the way for a more realistic and inclusive approach to ecosystem restoration. The study is published in Nature Communications.

This Snake Can Only Be Found in One Place in the Entire World, Taal Lake
A sea snake that doesn't live in the sea, the Taal Lake Sea Snake is one of only two true freshwater sea snakes in the world.
Taal Lake has one of the more peculiar ecosystems known to man. It has once been home to bull sharks and still has a considerable population of Maliputo and Tawilis in it. And even has snakes, a particular species that is among the rarest in the world. Unfortunately, it faces rapid extinction. Hydrophis semperi, better known as Garman's sea snake or the Taal Lake Sea Snake, defies nature in a sense. It is one of only two true freshwater sea snakes in the world (the freshwater sea snake species Laticauda crockeri being the other). The oftentimes harmless, venomous sea snake is only found in one place in the entire world, in the volcanic caldera that is Taal Lake. “The Lake Taal Snake is becoming rarer and has been classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as vulnerable. If you wish to see one, take a kayak or small boat, paddle around, and wait for one to pop up from the depths to take a breath. Don’t approach it—just observe from a distance and marvel at its Slytherin-like grace,” Gregg Yan once told Esquire Philippines...

Plastic pollution remains one of our largest–and growing– environmental threats. From wildlife entanglement to the ubiquitous microplastics contamination inside our own bodies, it’s clear that our penchant for single-use plastic has serious consequences. But when it’s everywhere, what can we really do about it?  New research indicates there’s at least one strategy that works to curb an especially problematic and unnecessary form of plastic trash. Local and state level bans on plastic bags successfully mitigate plastic bag litter along beaches, lakes, and rivers, according to a study published June 19 in the journal Science.

Giant viruses play a role in the survival of single-celled marine organisms called protists. These include algae, amoeba, and flagellates, that form the base of ocean food webs. And since these protists form an important part of the food chain, these large DNA viruses are often responsible for various public health hazards, including harmful algal blooms. A new study from scientists at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science may help unravel the many types of viruses present in our waterways and oceans. This knowledge could help local leaders better prepare for when a harmful algal bloom may be impacting their coastline or if any other viruses are present in local bays, rivers or lakes.

A new study suggests that Anna's Hummingbirds in the western United States are not only keeping up with human influence on their habitat, they're thriving. According to a recent study in Global Change Biology, a journal focused on environmental change, the use and prevalence of hummingbird feeders — like those red and clear plastic ones filled with homemade sugar water — changed the size and shape of the birds' beaks. The range of the hummingbird also spread from the southern part of California all the way up the West coast into Canada.
