Alright. Uh, important. Kinda awareness? I do not know how to like classify this.

look I’m getting this out of the way. I wasnmt planning on making this, but then some asshole said grooming and SA requires contact and/or rape.

So, I’m making an informational thing about what grooming actually is. In real life and out of reality.(Online, etc.)

Grooming is a form of SA(Sexual Assault) which usually happens between an adult and a minor. Despite this, it can happen to any age, gender, and it’s still grooming. No matter the person.

Grooming is usually used by an abuser to slowly get a victim to have the abuse normalized to them. I’ll be more focused on grooming outside of online spaces, since that’s what I’ve researched, but I plan on making a followup.

Alright, to start. Usually a groomer is somebody with power over their victim. Let’s say a popular celebrity, and a fan. A boss and an employee. Or somewhere where they can just contact the person, like a close friend, or a subject of obsession.

It can start off normal, like it’s just people being friendly.

Then they can start giving you a lot of gifts, or attention and praise if not gifts. It can usually be praise on work or something you’re proud of, or some expensive, unneeded and unasked for, gift. Its usually used in trust building stages, and a gift can be anything. If the groomer is a trusted adult (babysitter, parent, aunt/uncle, pastor, or more if the person is a minor) they might let them break rules. Might let them stay out more, take them to the movies, treat them like an adult. If an adult says “You’re so mature for your age!” And/or treats you like an adult, that’s a red flag.

Usually the groomer would try to isolate the victim. Maybe if the person vented, they’d say, “Well, nobody really understands us!” It could be trying to get an us/versus them mentality, or trying to pit them against their friends or trusted adults or family. So, they’ll be less likely to tell anyone if they were assaulted by the groomer. If the victim is a minor and the groomer let them break rules, or gave them things they aren’t allowed to have, they might say things like “Don’t tell your mother!” Or even try to say things like “Oh you know how your parents are!” To make the kid trust their parents even less.

Next is sort of, ignoring/breaking boundaries. These can be sexual or nonsexual. Let’s say you ask somebody to not mention a car crash. A groomer might anyways just to get you used to the idea that they ignore your boundaries. They’d then most likely make it more sexual boundaries, like slowly bringing up something sexual to a minor. A groomer may also show their victim smut or porn kind of to desensitize them. Or send pictures of themselves either nude or in revealing attire.

Not all grooming has the end goal of rape, but this could be common. The tactic could be used to make a child be more unlikely to tell an important figure if that did happen. But, sometimes they do only use grooming as a way to get a child to act as a servant.(A certain content creator did this, as well as just sexualized minors. Will not name but you know who I’m talking about.) Sometimes it can be to get somebody, usually a child, to do what you say. Using this content creator as an example, she would make the victims sometimes spam the comments of people calling out her predatory behavior so that it seemed fake.

In short, grooming is usually a tactic used by somebody in a position of power (at least over the victim) to usually get them used to sexual stuff, as well as make them less likely to tell if an assault does happen. It usually has the patterns listed above but can happen differently. I will probably make a follow up on online grooming, I just didn’t look into that as much today since I’m not as knowledgeable.
