Heaptober Day 2: Eyes

Had a lot of fun with this tbh! Some headcanons and more ID below

OK OK. I have no idea how eye genes and inheritance works BUT I don't care I made uo headcanons anyway so ahoy

Marcellus is less purple bc while he is related directly to the Queens he isn't a Princess and I will simply assume that the royal eyes are at least a little magyk yknow? In my mind all special eyes in the SH universe can change a bit depending on the environment. This is why Jen and Cerys both have the royal purple, and why Cerys has a deeper color... and a little bit of greenish mottling in there. They also have the same general eye layout, with the techniques and the golden freckles. Marcellus is far enough back in the family tree that gis look different.

Zelda has the Heap lines in her eyes and is otherwise 100% witchy blue. (this is also supposed to have sky connotations, because of Theo and the Moon and all that) Marwick has a base of her color, but muted with brown and hints of green - because he's very down to earth, and because of Sep.

Marissa has much darker blue, because she cannot stop getting tangled up in darke nonsense. She also has hints of green, because I think under different circunstancesshe could have been an incredible wizard.

And the greens!! Silas is kinda the bluebrint here - his general pattern is handed on to all his sons. Simon would be very close to his, but this is hus darke era, and it shows. Nicko never took magyk that seriously, so he's less bright. Septimus has the Heap pattern, but Marcia's base colors. (Headcanon that @septimus-heap passed on to me that wizard eyes are affected by their teachers!)

Sarah has more of a grassy color, and less lines than Silas, but this muted area around the pupil - that got passed on to all her sons. The main Heaps are geneeally supposed to have very bright nature greens - while Marcia has morw of the Extra Magyk Extra Green going on. She also has some purple and golden flecks in there :)

Well, 2 years after that I redrew it.

And now, 2 years after that, I redrew it again !

I want to make redrawing this over and over again a tradition, to remind myself of how much I've grown as a person and as an artist, and to remind myself of the fact that Sep Heap was the first ever fandom I truly interacted with. This series and its fandom will always be held close to my heart 💜

When we learn Merrin's age for the first time, the narration tells us he is 10 and half years old. Except this is still during Jenna's birthday. They are on the Muriel. He wouldn't be 10 and half. He would be 10 that day. It's a nice way to foreshadow that Merrin isn't actually Septimus.

headcanon that wizarding green eyes aren’t all the same green, but exist in every shade and someone’s eyes will match those of the person who first starts to teach them magyk.

people in the castle, where magyk is common and taught in schools rather than just at home, don’t really care about or even notice the exact green of someone’s eyes, but in some parts of the world it’s a big deal. magykal lineages might be traced by eye colour rather than blood. a magykal kid’s eyes not matching their parents might raise questions or simply reflect poorly on the parents and their own magykal abilities.

so marcia spends weeks just… looking at septimus, wondering why he looks so different from the dozen other heaps running around when actually he looks exactly the same except smaller and she realizes it’s his eyes. he doesn’t have the same bright springy green eyes as his brothers and silas; his eyes are a deep jewel green like hers. and marcia starts to feel guilty because that’s something that she’s taken away from both septimus (whose eyes will always mark him as other in the family he’s still getting to know) and silas (who almost certainly would have wanted to teach his youngest son magyk, the same way he taught his other boys). marcia has no idea how to broach the subject with septimus and decides she will apologize to silas first.

“i just found out my youngest son isn’t actually dead and you think i care about his eye colour marcia what the fuck”

and marcia just sputters that some people would care and declares she’s never going to be nice to him ever again

“Oh, very funny. Hello, Beetle—gosh, what are you wearing?” asked Septimus.

Beetle flushed. “Oh,” he said. “You noticed.”

Septimus stared at Beetle’s new acquisition—a short, navy blue jacket adorned with a plethora of gold braid and frogging. “I could hardly not notice,” he replied. “What is it?”

septimus heap books changed my life but i will never forget the moment jenna got upset with septimus for killing the bridge toll man and instead of taking a moment to philosophize about killing people is wrong and you always have a choice like most fairy tales and fantasies will instead sep was like 'its nice that youve lived a privileged life without murder jen, but sometimes killing is the only choice you have; i dont feel guilty about it and id do it again' like DAMN yes this boy is a lot of trauma packed into a small pre-teen body but that mometn stayed with me, the moment the fantasy story i loved allowed itself to face grim reality
