The Kid of Mars – Chapter 75 – The walls that we built from bottles and pills
Later that day Catherine dragged herself to bed. She was really tired, with Jared absent she had been accumulating more and more responsibilities at work, some of them weren’t even directly related to her original functions but someone had to keep the boat sailing and she knew that the only people Jared fully trusted was she and Emma. Moreover, the fact that she was almost eight months pregnant wasn’t exactly helping her either.
When she walked into the room Jared was still in a heavy sleep, all curled up and looking like a little boy trying to hide from something. “Honey, if you sleep like this your back will bother you tomorrow.” She tried to make him move, but the pills given to him were really doing their job, so she ended up moving his dead weight the best she could. Catherine laid next to him and wrapped her arms around his body. Usually he would react and protectively hug her back but that didn’t happen that night.
In the morning, when she woke up found Jared with his eyes already opened and staring at the ceiling. “Good morning sleepy head. How are you feeling today?” She tenderly caressed his head, placing his long hair away from his eyes. “Weird” He answered, his voice a little emotionless. “You’ll be better soon. You must be hungry…” That moment Shannon knocked on the door and Catherine told him to come in. He had spent the night there in case something was needed. “Hey bro. How high are you?” Shannon joked but after crossing eyes with Catherine realized that wasn’t the right mood. “I’m going to prepare something for us to eat.” She stood up and Jared tried to the same but almost felt to the floor. “I’m ok, just dizzy.” He tried to justify. “Do you want me to bring you breakfast here?” Catherine suggested, worried about him. “No. I’m not sick” He dryly answered. “Let me help you then.” Shannon wasn’t taking no for an answer.
After breakfast they were expecting him to start getting ready to go to the hospital but surprisingly he went straight back to bed, without a word. Catherine and Shannon looked at each other and followed him. “Are you still feeling dizzy?” Catherine was trying to understand what was wrong. “I don’t know. That shit they gave to me yesterday messed with me… I just need to rest for a bit.” At least they got a couple of sentences. “I’m going to the hospital Jay. Do you wanna come with me to check on Ricky? You can return with mom.” Shannon suggested, not really sure about what to expect. “I… I can’t do it today…” He was trying hard to find and excuse but they could see the sadness covering his features once again. “It’s ok honey. You don’t have to go. Just take the day to rest, it’ll be good for you.” Catherine cupped his face and kissed his head. “Yeah, you don’t have to worry. We’ll look after Ricky.” Shannon assured. “Thanks. Could you leave me alone for a while?” He didn’t asked that in an unpleasant or angry way. He just seemed tired. “Sure. Just call me if you need anything.” Catherine reminded before she and Shannon left.
“He’s not ok.” She concluded, the moment they were far enough from Jared’s room. “That’s not my brother. My brother doesn’t say he needs to rest and doesn’t go to bed after having breakfast.” It was time for Shannon to freak out. “But he really needs to rest. Maybe if he sleeps enough, he’ll be back to his normal self and the pills the doctors prescribed will help him…” Catherine tried to be rational. “I hope you’re right. But he didn’t even call my mom to know how Ricky’s doing.” She couldn’t deny that all his behavior was weird but justified. “You told me yourself the doctor said he’s depressed. A depression doesn’t go away from a day to another, we need to be patient with him.” Shannon ended up sitting down and took a deep breath. “You’re right. Honestly I don’t even know how he held up during all this time. I’d have gone crazy months ago.”
A couple of hours later Constance arrived home and hugged Catherine tightly. “Shannon told me about Jared. How’s he now?” She asked, obviously concerned about the wellbeing of his son. “He hasn’t left the room yet. Every time I go in there he just pretends to be asleep.” She confessed. “I’ll see if he talks to me.” Constance decided. She was clearly very tired too, but that mother instinct spoke louder. “How is Ricky?” Catherine finally asked, already mentally prepared do bad news. “He’s stable. Still asleep and connected to machines but not worse.” Not everything could be terrible after all. Constance finally went to check on his son and Catherine tried to work for a little but curiosity took the best of her so she decided to check what was going on. Before arriving she could already listen to the sobs and she didn’t had to enter the room to see Jared crying on his mother’s arms while she tried to calm him down. They stayed like that until late in the evening.
On the next morning Jared wasn’t by her side when she woke up. Catherine’s immediately thought that it was a good sign to have him out of bed. She search for him and found him in the studio working. That was nothing unusual but then she saw a cup full of something that was neither water nor almond milk. “Good morning.” Jared forced a smile when realized Catherine was watching him. “Jared, honey…” Catherine started when saw the bottle of whiskey. “You don’t drink in the morning or in any other hour and definitely not while taking medication.” She took that away from him. “I know, don’t judge me please. I thought that it would help me calming down.” He tried to justify himself. “I’m actually trying to work on something.” He smiled at her, looking for some approval. “I’m happy that you’re trying to work but maybe you should take it easy… Do you want to visit Ricky today?” His behavior was still odd. “Not yet. I’d rather stay here and work on some music. He isn’t conscious so it’s not like he’ll miss me.”
Catherine decided not to force him. However he refused to visit his son not only on the following day, but on the following week. Not only that but he refused to take his medication and to see any doctor or therapists and he had been drinking. Not that he was walking around drunk but it was becoming usual to find him with a bottle of some liquor next to him. “Dude, what the hell are you doing?” Shannon asked when caught him and while taking the glass out of his hand. “You’re the last person that can tell me not to drink, Shannon.” Jared got all defensive. “This is not about me. You’re better than this Jared and you know how this can end. If you were on your right state of mind you wouldn’t be doing this and you wouldn’t spend one week without visiting your son.” Shannon was grabbing him by his shoulders and almost shaking him. “You wanted me to come home and rest and that’s what I’ve been doing. Just let me live my life ok? Last time I checked you had your own shit to worry about.” He got free from Shannon’s grab and turned his back on him. “If it still concerns you, Ricky is getting better. Maybe they will wake him up soon.” Jared was already moving out of the room but stopped and took a deep breath. “Then what? He’ll get worse again?” He kept walking away.
Later that day Catherine headed to the studio trying to find Jared. It was already late in the evening and it had been hours since the last time she had saw him. Shannon had spoken to her about their incident earlier and she had decided that it was time to tell him a couple of truths. However she couldn’t find him at the studio neither anywhere else in the house. She tried to call him but he wouldn’t pick up his cellphone. She tried again, left some messages, always without an answer.  She was already panicking a little when decided to call Shannon. He was at the hospital with Constance and she thought that maybe Jared had gone there to finally see his son. But he wasn’t there either. Realizing how nervous she sounded, Shannon asked her to sit down and wait for him, promising that they would find Jared. Catherine did as she was told but didn’t stop trying to call him.
In a blink of an eye Shannon was back home and trying to comfort her the best he could. “I already called some of his friends, searched on social media, googled him…” Catherine was crying while trying to explain. “I should have checked on him earlier Shannon. I knew he was not ok.” She was panicking and blaming herself. “It’s not your fault. I was the last one who saw him and I wasn’t exactly kind.”  Shannon was also felling guilty, thinking how Jared had always been there to support him. “I’m going to drive around and maybe call some guys… We’ll find him.” He was trying to make a plan when they heard some noise outside. “Stay here.” Shannon ordered and went there to check what was going on. He saw a cab, a pissed driver, and someone clumsily trying to open the gate. It took a moment for him to realize that it was Jared. Shannon ran next to his brother without knowing if he should hug him in relief or hit him hard. He opened the gate himself and Jared immediately felt into his arms. “That guy is completely drunk. He yelled and cried all the way here. Is this even the right address?” The driver complained. “Yes it is.” Shannon answered while picking a ridiculous amount of money from his wallet. “I guess that’s enough. Thank you for service, please forget about this incident.” The pissed looked on the driver’s face was replaced by a grin when saw all that cash.
“Where is Catherine? I need to see her and explain…” Jared cried while his brother was trying to take him inside. He was terribly drunk. “She’s inside. Explain what man?” Shannon was trying to understand what he meant. Jared was about to answer but threw up on his own doorstep. “It’s ok. Just let it go.” Shannon told him as Catherine appeared at the door to see what was going on. “Oh my God Jared. I was so worried…” Jared threw himself into her arms the moment he saw her, missing his own puddle of puke for a tiny bit. “I’m so sorry. I really am… I didn’t meant to.” Catherine hugged him tightly without really understanding what he was talking about. “It’s ok honey. You’re home now.” But Jared kept crying and shanking his head. “No, you have to know. I was drunk and she sat on my lap and tried to kiss me but then I stopped. I swear that I stopped and ran away and got into a cab…” He said all of that in a single breath, without stopping crying. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” He knelt in front of her begging for her forgiveness. His beautiful blue eyes were red and he seemed lunatic. “It’s ok Jared. We’ll talk about it in the morning.” She tried to tranquilize him as Shannon was helping him back on his feet. She didn’t even know if what he had just said actually happened and if so if she should be mad. At the moment she could feel nothing but pity towards him. “No it’s not ok. You don’t deserve me. You should ran away and take our daughter with you. I’m a terrible father and I will never be a good husband.” Catherine didn’t know what to say anymore. The entire situation was just sad. Meanwhile Shannon was doing his best to carry his little brother to the room. “Come on Jay. Stop making a fool of yourself. You need a shower and to sleep.” However Jared was still offering some resistance. “Catherine, please. Forgive me and promise me you’ll stay here.” He begged once again. Catherine walked to his side and tenderly kissed his forehead, ignoring the mixed smell of vomit and alcohol. “I’m not going anywhere with this huge belly of mine. But we all need to rest. Go with Shannon and I’ll meet you in a bit.” Those words calmed Jared down enough for him to allow Shannon to drag him. “I love you and I want to marry you.” He said when no one else was expecting more words. Catherine didn’t know how to answer to that and stayed quiet, assuming it was also the alcohol speaking. Shannon just shook his head and forced Jared into his room.

Seriously, this is so sad, I want to cry. We need a miracle here. You gave me hope when you mentioned how the baby could help Ricky. Like, the world is so depressing some times, and read these stories is a kind of scape. Let's bring happiness!
well, well.. I guess the happy parts will seem even happier after these chapters. Assuming there will be happy parts of course.

The kid of Mars – chapter 74 – The Demons in My Mind
“Ricky, please you have to wake up.” Jared was screaming towards the lifeless body of his son. Suddenly he felt himself being pushed away from the bed and the room became full of doctors and nurses. “Please you have to save him, he can’t die.” He begged, his voice in a weird high pitch. “We are doing what we can, but you have to step away.” One of the doctors answered. They were ventilating the boy, his chest was already uncovered and his doctor was setting the defibrillator. Jared waited by the door crying compulsively as the doctor screamed “Clear.” It didn’t work since they kept making compression on his chest and were also injecting something into his blood.
Jared was feeling weird. His vision was getting blurry and narrowed, his legs were losing their strength and the air was getting trapped into his lungs. He wanted to scream, to ask what was happening but he couldn’t. All that came out of his mouth were sobs. He didn’t saw his mother and his brother getting into the room and also didn’t noticed that Shannon was the one that caught him when his legs failed while the doctors tried once again to resuscitate the child with the defibrillator. “He has to wake up. I promised him…” He finally managed to say, his brother still holding him. The doctor locked eyes with him and gave a couple more instructions to the other people. He was going to try with the defibrillator once again and meanwhile Shannon was already trying to make Jared look away. The moment they heard “Clear” being screamed once again, he was already crying like a little kid on his mother’s arms. After that everything went silent. For Jared it seemed like a pause that lasted forever, like everything was frozen while he could do nothing but sob and beg.
“We’ve got a pulse” Suddenly someone said. That took Jared out of this trance and he finally realized that he was being held by both his mother and brother. “It’s going to be ok honey, they brought him back.” Constance tried to comfort his son without letting him go, not even when he tried to walk to the boy’s side. “Is he going to be ok?” Shannon took the initiative to ask, since Jared wasn’t really in conditions to do so. “Ricky is really a little fighter.” The doctor commented, it seemed like not even him believed in the little miracle that had just happened. “He is alive but we need to check a couple more things. Maybe you should wait in my office.” That seemed more like an order than a suggestion.  Jared wanted to protest and to stay near his son but he couldn’t do it so eventually allowed his brother to drag him outside the room. His legs weren’t completely working yet and he had a weird felling on his stomach, so the moment he saw a rubbish bin, he knelt next to it and threw up. Constance knelt next to him and hugged his boy tightly once again, trying to hold the pieces that her youngest son was broking into.
A couple hours later, Shannon was driving home with a barely awake Jared by his side. They had to call some doctors to check on him and they ended up prescribing something to help him relax. Shannon almost had to carry him to the car and Jared didn’t say a word on their way. When they arrived, he had to support all of Jared’s weights as they walked in. “Oh my God, Jared what happened?” Catherine almost screamed when saw them entering. She wasn’t expecting to see them home, much less with Jared in such conditions. Then, terrible thoughts started crossing her mind. “Ricky is ok.” Shannon immediately said when saw panic crossing Catherine’s features. “I’ll explain later. I’ll just help him go to bed first.” She agreed, got out of their way and followed behind. Once inside the room, Shannon gently sat Jared on the bed and together, both he and Catherine helped him change into something more comfortable. When Jared was finally tucked in bed she caressed his face, kissed him on the forehead and excused herself out of the room, saying she was going to prepare some tea. Seeing his big blue eyes, always so full of passion, completely lifeless, was too much for her to bear.
Shannon sat next to his brother waiting for him to fall asleep. Instead he started mumbling some barely understandable words. “What is it Jay? I can’t understand you.” Shannon wasn’t even sure if was actually trying to say something or just kind of dreaming. “Ricky asked me to die.” Jared finally managed to say. “He wants us to do with him the same we did to Sky”. Shannon squeezed his shoulder in an attempt to comfort him. “He’s a small boy, scared and tired. I’m sure he didn’t really mean it. Besides, you saw how hard he fought today to stay alive.” Jared didn’t answered. He didn’t have the energy to do so. “Dude, you’re completely stoned.” Shannon joked, in an effort to change the subject. “I guess I am. I don’t even know what fucked up shit they gave to me.” Even Jared had to outline a little smile. “This makes me remember that time when you were in like… seventh grade? You went after me and tried to prove yourself to the guys I was hanging out with and then I had to drag your high ass all the way back home.” He didn’t even know if Jared was listening to him but at least he wasn’t talking about other things. “I had to get you to bed and I didn’t slept at all that night, afraid that something would happen to you.” Jared had already closed his eyes but smiled. “Mom was working on the night shift so she didn’t realize. I guess she would have killed me if she had found out what I led you into…” Nostalgia was taking over the room. “You felt like shit the morning after and I told mom that you had food poisoning” Shannon could see that his brother was almost asleep, however he still muttered some words that sounded like “Thanks for always catching me brother.”
After getting sure Jared was deeply sleeping, Shannon walked to the kitchen, where he found Catherine cleaning her tears and holding a cup of tea. “Hey, hey. No crying and no freaking out.” Shannon warned as he hugged her. “That’s bad for the baby and we don’t want the little one to be out in the world too soon.” Catherine also held him tightly, with Jared somehow gone, she really welcomed Shannon’s support. “What happened at the hospital?” She had to ask and was waiting for him to tell her the true. “Ricky’s heart stopped but the doctors got him back. He’s now in the intensive care unit, there’s a machine replacing his kidneys, another replacing his lungs and they were still trying to figure out if the time his heart stopped damaged his brain.” Shannon led Catherine to a chair and forced her to sit down as he was explaining. “But is he going to be ok? What about Jared?” She was nervous and Shannon was afraid she would go into labor or something like that. “The doctors are doing what they can, nothing is lost. Meanwhile, my brother had a nervous breakdown. They had to call a psychiatrist to check on him.” It was being hard for Shannon to verbalize that. Jared had always been the mentally strong one, the one who stood up for himself and helped the others to the same. “The doctor says he may be depressed. They gave something to him at the hospital and prescribed these pills.” Shannon took two little containers out of his pocket and gave them to Catherine. “Can I trust you with his medication? I don’t think he’ll take them as he should and I don’t trust in myself either.” He asked Catherine, who immediately accepted. “Of course Shannon. I’ve been telling him for weeks that he should visit a doctor, this was so predictable… I should have insisted.” She was feeling like she could have done more. “Don’t feel guilty. I should have also realized that my brother wasn’t dealing with the situation in the best way and was dealing with his own demons…” He was also starting to feel tears threating to fall but he had to stay strong for Catherine and for his unborn niece. Was the least he could do for Jared. “Who is going to be with Ricky, now?” She ended up asking, trying to move forward. “I and mom are going to make shifts. And you’re going to focus on taking care of yourself, the baby and keeping an eye on my stubborn little brother.” He quickly added before she said anything else. “And that’s already a very demanding job. You can count on me for whatever you need, ok? ” Shannon pulled her into one of his famous bear hugs as he tried to make his point clear.

The kid of Mars – chapter 73 – Rescue Me
“Daddy, how do you think it feels like when we die?” Ricky suddenly asked. His dad was sat by his side, sending some e-mail on his mobile phone when almost dropped it due to his son unexpected question. “I don’t know buddy. But why are you asking that? Have you already finished your book?” Jared tried to change the subject. “Not really. But what do you think it feels like? I need to be ready.”
His father felt that familiar feeling in his eyes. “Maybe it’s like falling asleep…” He tried to say something but it wasn’t being easy. “But I don’t like falling asleep. I always have bad dream” Ricky muttered. He was searching for a comforting answer but his dad wasn’t giving it to him. “Always? I thought you were doing much better…” Jared was confused and it occurred to him that they had been so focused on Ricky’s disease that they almost forgot his other issues. “They got worse again. But this time they are different because I can’t wake up and think that is what will happen when I die.” Jared sat on the bed next to him and pulled the boys head against his chest. “You could have told me already that you were having nightmares again.” He was doing his best to keep his voice firm and his tears away. “I’ll talk to your doctor and to your therapist so we can fix it, ok?” He kissed his son’s head but he knew that it wasn’t the answer he was looking for. “And you don’t have to worry about dying, that won’t happen for the next one hundred years.” Ricky looked his dad in the eyes, clearly showing he didn’t believe in his words. “I know that I’m really sick now. Everything hurts…”The boy rarely complained but that pain was well portrayed in the kid’s beautiful blue eyes. “It will be over soon buddy, I promise.” It really would, one way or another, but of course he didn’t say that. “You just have to hang tight for a couple more weeks.” Jared snuggled the boy on his arms and hugged him tightly, like it would prevent him from leaving. “Have you already thought in a name for your sister?” He ended up asking, trying to change the subject once again. “Yes. Can we call her Maggie?” The boy promptly answered, making his dad realize he had been thinking about it. “It would be a beautiful homage… we need to discuss with Catherine first but I guess she will agree with us.” Jared smiled at his boy, who was already looking a little bit tired and fighting the urge to close his eyes. “Why don’t you try to take a little nap?” He suggested. “I don’t like to sleep. What if I can’t wake up? Then I would be having the bad dreams forever…” Jared sighed. They were back at that topic again. “Do you remember when you were afraid of wetting the bed and I promised that I would wake you up so you could go to the toilet?” Ricky nodded. “And it worked…” The boy agreed once again. “I swear that I’ll do it again. I’ll always wake you up, every time you need and rescue you” It seemed like Jared’s words helped the boy, since he felt the little one relaxing against his chest. “Do like you did before. You just have to close your eyes and think about good things. Think about home, about our family, about your sister, about the trip we are going to do to the snow…” As Jared spoke, the child felt asleep, leaving him alone with his own thoughts.
On the following week everything went to hell. Ricky got another lung infection, his kidneys were also failing, he couldn’t stand up anymore and the doctors didn’t even know if the boy would be able to tolerate the medication he needed to receive before the transplant. “Come on buddy, you need to make an effort to eat something.” Jared was trying to feed the boy like he was a baby, since he barely had the energy to feed himself, but it wasn’t being easy. “I can’t. I’ll throw up again.” He replied in an almost incomprehensible voice. “Maybe you won’t, we have to try.” Jared insisted while holding the spoon. “You heard what you doctor said earlier. You need energy and if you can’t eat they will have to place a tube down your throat…” There weren’t soft ways to tell him the things anymore, however Ricky seemed unimpressed. “I don’t care. I already have tubes everywhere.” His father dropped the spoon, realizing it was useless. “Why don’t you just do with me what you did with Sky?” The kid asked. “What?” Jared had no idea of what he was talking about. “Yes, dad. He was very sick and you took him to the doctor and they put him to sleep forever. You told me he wouldn’t suffer anymore that way…” When it finally hit Jared what his son was trying to say he felt like he was about to have a break down in front of the boy. While holding his tears he looked at the door, with the hope of seeing anyone coming in that would save him from that conversation. “Don’t be silly Ricky. That’s something we just do with animals.” Jared tried to reply, battling the knot in his throat. “Why? I’m also very sick and I’m also suffering. It’s the same.” Jared had to stood and turn around in order to calm himself and swipe away his tears. “No it’s not. He was an old dog ok? You are a little boy with your entire life ahead of you. I know that you’re uncomfortable, and in pain and suffering but we know how to treat you. You just need to wait a little bit more.” He felt pretty stupid for asking the boy to be patient like he was waiting for some gift, but he didn’t had anything else to offer him. “Ok daddy, if you say so… I don’t want you to be upset.” Ricky had already understood that his words had hurt his dad. “I think that I’m hungry now, can you help me finishing this?” Jared understood he was trying to cheer him up, and faced the little one once again while forcing a smile. “I’ve a better idea. You’ll give me 5 minutes and I’ll buy you a chocolate. It will be our secret.” He winked at the boy, who immediately agreed.
Jared left the boy’s side and before anything else he walked to a bathroom to have his little and silent mental breakdown away from the world. When he managed to stop his tears, he washed his face and went to the vending machine to pick Ricky’s favorite chocolate. He was setting up his poker face, and getting ready to enter into the room again, when an annoying sound coming from the there made him freeze at first and then run inside, ignoring, for once, the asepsis rules.
“No, no. Ricky, wake up buddy.” He ran to the boy’s side and started shaking him the moment he saw he was unconscious. By his side the monitor that constantly checked his vitals was showing a pattern that Jared had never seen before.

The Kid of Mars – chapter 72 – We try to forget
The lung infection almost got the best of him, but surprisingly it didn’t defeat little Ricky. After a week connected to a ventilator and receiving antibiotics he started getting better. There weren’t more episodes like the one when the kid screamed for his mother, but that one was still very present in Jared’s mind.
“What are you doing?” Jared asked his son, maybe a bit more harshly than he intended.  He had left for a couple of minutes, while the kid was asleep, in order to buy some coffee but when returned found him out of bed and struggling to give a few steps. “I’m sorry daddy. I just wanted to pick my pencils.” He immediately apologized “Please don’t be upset, I’m much better today.”  He even smiled a little bit while showing to his dad how he was standing up. However Jared didn’t seemed much impressed. “You can’t feel a little better, can’t you?” He asked while picking him up to place him back on the bed. “The moment you feel better, you immediately start doing things that you shouldn’t.” Jared picked the pencils himself and gave them to Ricky. He then sat on the sofa and started scrolling on the phone, leaving Ricky staring at him with his blue eyes tearing up.
“Have I done anything wrong?” The child finally asked after realizing his dad wasn’t in the mood to interact. And it was wasn’t just that day, his dad’s bad humour had started a couple of days ago. “Why are you so mad at me?” “Hey, I’m sorry buddy.” Jared finally realized the kid was about to cry. “You did nothing wrong and I’m definitely not mad at you. I’m just tired…” “Tired of me being sick and making you stay here?” He didn’t even allow his dad to finish and jumped to conclusions, making Jared regret his choice of words once again.
“That was not what I said. I will never get tired of being with you. Whether you’re sick or not.” He stood up and sat on the bed next to his son, pushing the boy to his embrace. “Do you remember anything from last week?” Jared took the courage to ask. “Not much until two days ago. Did anything happen?” Ricky seemed really confused and worried. “No buddy. It’s just that you were very sick and I… I got really scared that you wouldn’t wake up.” Jared replied, without being sure if that was the right thing to say. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to sound angry before. There was a lot on my mind but I guess now I’m just relived that you’re still here talking with me and making your drawings.” He had to wipe the tears from his own eyes. The child still seemed confused, after all is dad was saying he was relived but at the same time was crying and hugging him, when a few minutes ago was almost screaming at him. “So what do you need the pencils for?” Jared finally asked, trying to break the tension. “I wanted to do something for the baby. Just in case you know, that I don’t have other chance.” Those words were very heavy and realizing the child knew he didn’t have much time left broke his father’s heart. “Actually I need to ask you something before starting.” Ricky quickly added before giving his father time to get depressed again. It was Jared’s time to get curious. “What do you want to know?” He just hoped that it wasn’t one of those hard questions. “I know it’s weird but I think the baby is a girl. Have you told me that or have I been dreaming?” That made Jared smile. “Maybe you dreamt, but you’re absolutely right. You are going to have a baby sister to take care of. And I’m sure you’ll have a lifetime full of chances to show how much you love her.” Jared tried to sound convincing, even though he was starting to have more doubts each day.
That night Jared went home with the drawing and walked to the soon to be baby’s nursery. That was still nothing more than an empty room with some unpacked boxes. He had already took some time to go shopping with Catherine, but didn’t find the strength to set thing up. He looked at the picture Ricky made once again but that time, and opposite to what he did when the child first showed it to him, he allowed some tears to fall from his eyes. It depicted their little family, Jared, Catherine, a baby girl and Ricky, everybody smiling, however the boy draw himself near the sky, resting on a cloud and observing what was going on under him. Back at the hospital he pretended he didn’t understood, just complimented Ricky for his good work and didn’t even dared to ask why he had made the decision of drawing it that way, mainly because he knew the reason behind it. Jared put the drawing on a frame and nailed it on the wall. Then, still with tears running down his eyes he started unpacking the boxes and trying to set the crib.
“Jared? Honey is everything alright?” Catherine asked from the door, but got no answer. Jared seemed completely focused on his task so she walked next to him and placed her arms around his body. “Hey. Just make a little break and talk to me.” She felt the tension in him slowly decreasing. “You scared me, I wasn’t expecting you home.” Jared put away the hammer and turned around to face her. “I’m sorry. That wasn’t in my plans to come home today but then Ricky did something for the baby’s room and I wanted to get it ready so I could show him. And also for our baby girl, I don’t want her to be neglected I thought that it wasn’t fair that I couldn’t take a couple of hours to get her room ready because of her brother. I mean she’s not even born yet and I’m already placing Ricky before her…” He was going to keep talking but Catherine shut him up with a kiss. “That’s very sweet of you, but we can do it tomorrow morning after you rest. Even hire someone to help us.” Jared took her by the hand to show the picture Ricky have made. “Look at this. He already knows that he’s dying. After everything else he went through now he has to deal with this shit. My son knows he’s dying and it’s like he’s never lived. Just 8 years of life and each one of them was lived in misery.” Catherine grabbed Jared’s arm without knowing what to say, so she just allowed him to keep talking, hoping that it would help him. She had a couple of tears running down her face too, motivated by the picture and by Jared’s words “I want to get this nursery ready so I can show it to him while he’s still conscious. I have to do it for Ricky and for our daughter.” He finally finished.
“You don’t have to prove yourself to anyone honey.” Catherine had finally understood what was happening on his busy mind. “It’s not your fault that all those bad things happened to Ricky and he knows that. And you’re definitely not neglecting our daughter.” She tried once again to make him see things the way they really were. “Ricky is already our little angel, even here on earth and I’m sure that he’ll make it. In less than two months he’ll be making pictures of our family but with him down here, right next to us and that will be the way things will be forever.” With those words Jared finally broke down and started sobbing with his head buried in her shoulder. Catherine held him as close as her belly allowed and let him cry.
“We’ll set the crib today, then we’ll sleep and tomorrow we’ll call someone to help us doing the rest.” She told him as he cried and that wasn’t a suggestion. She was starting to get really worried about Jared. He was very pale and very skinny, still not recovered from the movie. Catherine had witnessed him having troubles on carrying Ricky to the bathroom the day before and the boy was a bunch of bones too, so she doubted of Jared ability do dye the walls with pink ink. However, his psychological health seemed even worse. He was very temperamental, always on the verge of tears, he had even lost the ability to hide them in front of Ricky. And he was also on the opposite extreme, when he was not crying, he seemed emotionally detached, even towards his son. Catherine was afraid he was having a burnout. “Jared, sweety… Maybe you should make an appointment with a doctor. You seem a little sick.” She took the courage to make the suggestion when his sobs faded away. “What? No, I’m ok. I just need some proper meals and to sleep for an entire night on a regular bed and then I’ll be ok.” He quickly wiped his tears and walked once again to his task, like he was trying to prove her wrong. “You seem a little depressed honey, maybe a doctor could prescribe you something to help you go through this phase...” She tried once again but it did nothing but freak him out. “I won’t take any pills. I’m not depressed, I don’t need it and… and even if I did I can’t take the risk of getting addicted to that shit.” He wasn’t angry but the way he expressed it was pretty steady. “You wouldn’t get addicted Jared. I’m sure there are meds that could help you without that risk…” He just gave her a sad smile and shook his head. That was an already lost battle. Catherine realized that she was hitting on one of his hard limits and that wasn’t the best time to do so. “All right. I’m gonna order some of your favourite Asian food, while you try to figure out how to build this thing. As soon as we’re done you’re going to move your ass to bed and you’ll sleep for as long as you need.” Jared agreed to that. The food arrived quickly and with his belly full it got easier to complete his task. In less than an hour the crib was set up. He sent a picture to his mother who replied with a text saying Ricky was ok so he allowed himself to relax for a bit and for Catherine to take him to bed. However when she thought he was going to fall asleep he decided to show he had other plans.
“Jared, I don’t think you’re exactly in the mood for this…” Catherine tried to resist his advances as soon as he started kissing her neck. “Don’t worry, I promise I won’t tell anybody that you took advantage of me.” He joked. Catherine was getting exasperated with his humour swings. “This’s not funny. You should be resting.” She put some distance between them, turned on around and laid on her side of the bed. “Is this how things are going to be? Can’t I have my old life left just for a night?” Catherine felt like he was accusing her. “Well since I wasn’t part of that old life of yours maybe you should go out and look for one of your old fuckbuddies. I’m sure they will be more than happy to help you run away from your problems.” His words had hurt her and he realized that. “Hey you know that I was not talking about you. I feel very grateful to have you in my life, and our baby girl, and our boy and I won’t run away from neither of you. I just want to erase that hospital room from my mind for a couple of minutes.” He tried to explain himself. Catherine had to fight the urge of giving him the cold treatment until morning. She wanted to do it, but she also knew he wasn’t exactly ok. “I’ll forgive you if you promise me that you’ll take better care of yourself. Ricky needs you, I need you, our baby is going to need you, but you won’t help any of us you keep going like this…” Jared approached her once again and gently kissed her on the lips before she could continue. “I’ll see what I can do, but can we take care of each other for the next couple of hours?”
Catherine understood what he meant when her skin suddenly became alive as she felt his fingertips running up the back of her thigh, over her ass and along her back. She felt his lips brushing the soft flesh on the back of her neck and his warm breath on her skin. She reached her arm up over her head and looped it around his head, pulling him closer to her and running her fingers through his hair. A twinkle built between her thighs that could no longer be ignored. She felt his fingers caress over her breast and then move down her side and over her thigh. Jared knew how to tease her. His fingers moved up her inner thigh and barely brushed over her sweetness as she finally took in a breath, her hips wiggling to find his hand again. He could feel her heart pounding against him as his lips moved over her neck and across the back of her shoulders as he let his finger slide deep into her. A soft moan crossed over her lips as she tilted her head back, searching for his lips. Sliding his other arm under her, he held her close, placing his hand on her face as he kissed her soft lips, his tongue parting them and sliding into her mouth.  Rolling over in his arms she pressed her naked breasts against him, kissing him back. Pulling his head back he looked down at her as she opened her eyes. His blue eyes peered into her soul, reading her every thought. "I love you." Was all he said before he lowered his lips to her neck. He moved down her body, kissing his way over her soft skin, his lips touching every spot that drove her wild. No one knew her body like he did. She had to feel him inside her. Jared grabbed her hand and pinned it down beside her head and then the other, kissing her hard, his tongue filling her mouth. With one swift motion he lowered himself onto her and entered her quickly and deeply. They both moaned as the sensation took over their bodies as they make slow and deep love. They were completely lost in each other. The whole world had drifted away in those moments, just like Jared wished earlier.   Catherine wrapped her arms around his back, her nails scratching along his skin as she tried to meet his thrusts. She felt as if she could not get enough of him, as if she needed to feel him even deeper inside her. As if she had spoken the words he began to press harder into her, causing her to reach her limit. Jared could feel her orgasm through his whole body, and he immediately followed her. His body was shaking as he finally stopped moving and rested next to her with his arms wrapped firmly around her body. His eyes closed as he rested her head against her chest. Catherine smiled to herself and caressed his back, kissing his head softly. Jared finally seemed relaxed as he was peacefully falling into a deep and deserved sleep.

The kid of Mars – Chapter 71 – Do you believe?
Catherine was gathering her documents in order to go to her appointment with the obstetrician. “Are you sure you don’t want me to go with you.” Jared asked as he walked out of the bathroom still half naked. He had left Ricky for a couples of hours so he could have some rest and take a bath, however he was already getting ready to leave once again. It was everything back to how it was 3 months earlier “I’m sure honey. I’ll just talk to my doctor and clarify some doubts. It would be a waste of time for you. You should use it to be with Ricky or to sleep a little bit more.” She answered while helping him buttoning his shirt. “Babe, please… You have to tell me if there’s something wrong with you or the baby.” Jared almost begged. “It’s like the third time you have appointments that were not planed.” His tired eyes showed fear as he spoke and Catherine felt bad for giving him even more stuff to worry about but she had to do what she had planned without Jared knowing. There was no way she was going to give him false hopes so she decided to wait for the results before telling him. “I promise it’s everything ok. But we’ve been under some stress so I wanted to make sure it didn’t affect our little one. Besides you aren’t the only one who likes to have things planned, I want to make sure I won’t have any surprises when the time comes.” Jared seemed a little more convicted after listening to her words. “When the time comes I won’t leave your side for a second.” He warned and kissed her on the lips.
Some hours later Catherine left the doctor office holding the confirmation she needed. She got on her way to meet Jared and Ricky while thinking in how she would break the news to him. When she arrived near the boy’s room, she found Jared on the hall, trembling a little bit, his head lowered and hidden between in hands. “Jared, what’s wrong?” She immediately asked, fearing the worse. “Ricky… He’s getting sicker. Probably some infection. He has started coughing and his temperature is rising.” Jared replied, it was obvious that he had been crying. “Hey. I’m sure they will give him some antibiotics and solve the problem.” Catherine tried to comfort him. “It’s not that easy, the doctors told me his kidneys won’t stand much more medication. But what about you? What have the doctor told you?” He tried to change the subject. Catherine took a deep sighed before handling him the papers she had with her. “You’ll understand what I’ve been doing after reading this.” Jared stared at her, his eyes showing even more worry than before. “Don’t worry it’s not about the baby. She’s great.” Catherine immediately eased him. “She? I thought we’ve decided to wait until the birth to find out.” The worry was now replaces by some disappointment and confusion. “I couldn’t have done this without finding out the gender. I’m sorry honey. But now please read it.” She tried to persuade him before he started taking conclusions. Jared reluctantly started reading the papers.
“You tested the baby!” That was an accusation and he seemed almost angry. “Well, you could have told me you were going to risk the life of my child.” He was raising his voice, but Catherine decided to ignore it, taking into account the amount of stress he had been under lately. “I didn’t risk the life of our child. If you read it with attention you would realize that they searched for the baby’s cells in my own blood. Nothing potentially harmful was made.” She patiently explained, as if she was talking with a kid. “What matters here is the result. Don’t you see that they are compatible?” Catherine pointed to the only bit that really mattered in that paper. Jared started walking around probably processing what she had just told him. He eventually stopped at Ricky’s door and stared at him. The boy seemed more fragile than ever with a ventilation mask and wires all around him. “It’s the solution we’ve been looking for. All they need is the baby’s umbilical cord. She will never be at risk…” Catherine walked to his side and held his hand. “We should have done this together. The idea had already crossed my mind but… but I was scared that it would change the way I see the baby. I don’t want to start thinking of it... she as someone who exists to allow my other kid to be alive.” Jared had tears running down his cheeks once again. His head was really turning into a mess. “You should be more confident on your parenting skills. I’m sure this baby will be no less than a huge daddy’s girl and you’ll treat her like a princess for the rest of her life. But I’m sorry for not talking with you before making the test. I just didn’t want to create expectations.” Jared shook his head and smiled a tiny bit. “I don’t deserve you. I guess we have some pink baby stuff to buy now.” Catherine also smiled and put her arms around his body. “I never took you as someone with those kind of gender stereotypes.” She joked. “You have to believe in me. If anything we’ll see her as a blessing even bigger than what she already is.” Jared took the chance to tenderly kiss her, as if he was searching for some comfort. “I believe you. I just don’t know if…. If Ricky can wait for her.” To that Catherine didn’t have an answer. No one could tell if the little boy would still be alive in two months without being treated.
Ricky choose that moment to start moving and to take the mask out of his face. Jared immediately ran to his side. “Hey buddy, take it easy. The mask helps you breath.” He tried to put it back put Ricky showed resistance and was trying to talk “Where is my mom?” Jared got speechless with the child’s question. He certainly was out of his mind, the hallucinated look in his eyes said so, but he had no idea of how to react. “She is not here honey. You have to calm down.” Catherine tried to do something since Jared was completely apathetic. “You’re not my mommy. I want my mom.” His eyes immediately got filled with tears and he started screaming for his mother. “Look at me Ricky. Look at me buddy.” Jared finally tried to do something however he was already crying too. Catherine had left to call someone. “It’s me. I’m your dad. You are with me now.” He was holding the boy so he wouldn’t move and hurt himself. “You live with me, with Catherine, you have a dog and you’ll have a baby sister very soon.” He just continued talking in an effort to wake the kid. “I taught you how to play guitar but what you really love is drawing and painting. I promised we are all going on a snow trip as soon as you get better.” He was rocking the boy in his arms, the sound of his screams for his mother were being hushed by his dad’s shirt. When his doctor got into the room the boy was already almost asleep once again, but he asked Jared to step away so he could check the kid. Jared did so and felt into Catherine’s arms. He was still crying, but he didn’t care anymore about who saw. He was almost feeling like screaming for his mother too. Catherine was caressing his back and his head, without knowing what to say. She didn’t know if Ricky could wait for the birth of his sister, but she was also starting to get worried about Jared and wondering in what condition he would by the time.
