A quick rant about Pyotr’s childhood. (This might not be very well organised sorry, but I was thinking a lot about it lately.)
It’s interesting that in case of Pyotr's childhood/teenage years Dostoevsky gives us only hints and leaves the rest to interpretation. He doesn’t elaborate. (Except for that one conversation between Pyotr and Stepan, where Pyotr purposefully insults him.) All we know is that he lived apart from his father (was practically abandoned by him), grew up with “some distant aunts”, and then went to a gymnasium (where teachers were notoriously abusive). And… that’s about it. But there are a few characters who have something in common with Pyotr’s upbringing – at least two, the Underground Man and the Meek One – and the implications are obviously… not that great.
While, of course, I don’t think that those stories show exactly what Pyotr went through, they still help us paint the whole picture.
Let’s start with the Underground Man. Recalling his first years at school, he says this (translation mine, so maybe not very literary haha):
I was shoved into this school by my relatives, on whom I was dependent and about whom I had no knowledge whatsoever – they shoved me, orphaned, already crushed by their scolding, already wistful, silent and wildly looking at everything around me. Peers met me with evil and merciless derision for this only that I was unlike any of them.
Now for the Meek One:
For three years she’s been a slave to her aunts[…] She taught her aunt’s children, made underwear, and eventually not only that, but, with her chest, also washed the floors. Quite simply, they even beat her, made her feel guilty for eating their bread. In the end, they planned to sell her. (i.e. marry her off)
Whatever of this applies to Pyotr is up to you to decide. Dostoyevsky probably has more passages like that, but I just wanted to share those two.
So yeah, poor guy :/

I really love the friendship between Ford and Fiddleford, and this sweet moment is one of my favourite bits in journal 3. And yes, I prefer the original line
