max was standing in the red bull garage, listening to his teammate, yuki tsunoda, talk. max was infamous for his prickly personality … yet you still talked to him without any fear. you looked max in the eye, you were there.

that’s why max loved you, so, so much. you were real. max felt like he could let his guard down around you, like he didn’t have to be “ four time world champion max emilian verstappen “ when he was around you. he could just be … max.

max folded his arms against his chest as yuki spoke. he wasn’t really listening — he was thinking about you. oh … you were gorgeous, in his eyes, and that was what mattered. you were funny, you were kind. like, genuinely kind. not the fake type of nice done for pr.

“max, are you even listening?” yuki asked, sighing. “if you want to go to y/n, just go. she’s right over there. i’ll just be here. alone.” he pouted slightly.

max rolled his eyes, muttered ‘drama king’, and walked over to you. he smiled, it was so slight. you’d have to know max, to be able to differentiate his resting bitch face from a smile.

“y/n,” max’s voice was … soft. not blunt, not harsh. but a softer tone from his usual voice. “hey.”

“hi, max!” you said cheerfully, that smile max loved dearly on your face. “what’s up?”

this was it. max couldn’t take much anymore, knowing that you could be his. he didn’t want to miss this opportunity, he didn’t want to miss on something that could go away.

“i … love you,” max said, almost a whisper. you blinked, and your smile widened.

“i love you too, max!” you replied, hugging the dutchman.

“damn it .. finally, i’ve wanted you to be my girlfriend for years—” max was interrupted by you, looking … confused? you pulled away from max.

“max … i don’t love you like … that. i love you as a friend,” you said, cautious as to try and not make max emotional. “… i’ve never loved you in that way. i’ve only cared for you as a best friend..”

“what? but — but you said —” max couldn’t take feel the tears prickling at his eyes, but he blinked them away. “… oh.. okay. i’m sorry. please forget this ever happened.”

a whole week after the rejection … max couldn’t find you anywhere in the paddock. you never showed up to the free practice, or qualifying. max was worried you wouldn’t be there at the next race.

“yuki, have you seen y/n?” max asked his teammate, trying not to look concerned.

“y/n? she’s not coming to races anymore … that’s what i heard around the paddock,” yuki responded, looking up from his phone. “it’s okay though. you’ll find someone else who’ll understand you, trust me! she’s just taking a break from the sport …”

the rest of yuki’s words, max didn’t hear. he just had one thought in mind.
