Why is US Healthcare so confusing and expensive?
Simple answer, because healthcare in the US is a business with lots of competitors, each trying innovative solutions to earn a revenue. Now, this is not a bad thing, since the competition drives the quality of care up. However, the US healthcare has gotten so complex that we, as a country, spend 8% of our dollars on the healthcare administrative costs vs. the 1-3% in other countries (JAMA study). These admin costs include: complying with regulations, coding, billing, and many more.
What really sets the US Healthcare apart form the rest of the world is the minimal government involvement, essentially, leaving the healthcare stakeholders to design the rule book for the big game.
"Ok, great, how does this help me pay my $10,000 ER bill?" By becoming aware of the route we have chosen as a country and taking the steering wheel in your own hands to become an educated patient.
