Jen sucked in a very slow, very deep breath through her nose.  This chick was skating on thin ice.  She had heard generalized stuff like this in the media, but never directly to her face.  Take the high road, Walters.  Take the high road.

“I heard about things…” he looked to Jen, and the look in his eyes told her he hadn’t slept properly. His mind was firing in random directions, so his speech was a mess as per usual, “You and the guy with the, the boyfriend, thingy…” he gestured to the air, as though it was a physical mass he could point to. “Real sorry about that….. sorta like me and Star.” he nodded, looking to his feet awkwardly, “She’s uh…… she’s…..” and he mimed with one hand the gesture of taking off.

Jen couldn’t help the slight slump in her posture when he mentioned Starfire, running her fingers through her roots.  “Yeah, I know.  I miss her, too.”  That was the thing about specialized schools like this; people flitted in and out like the tide, from no fault of their own, and - wait.  

“Wait a minute...”  Jen turned herself more toward Justin.  “Were you and Starfire...like...a thing?”  This was the first time she had heard anything of the sort, so she was purposely vague with her word choice.

Justin hadn’t really been the same since Starfire had left. He was sat on a chair, tinkering and rechecking the artificial heart he had disconnected from its power pack and was fixing up a new outer power supply. Ok, it was looking messy, but he figured it’d be easier to have a power supply that could be plugged in directly instead of just dragging around a power pack. The truth was his mind was a mess, and his own heart was hurting, and here he was tinkering with a new heart to stop himself from remembering how much his hurt when he looked up and saw a familiar, incredibly welcome face. “…..Heya”

“Hey yourself,” Jen tossed back, hands resting comfortably on her hips.  “Long time, no see.”  In her opinion, Justin looked like a borderline wreck, but she decided not to mention it.  At least she couldn’t discern any bags under his eyes...that, or he was really good with concealer.  She just took a spot beside him and patted his back.  “What’cha up to?”
