when they botch the word meanings because they’re using a ‘synonym’ book when translating, but don’t care to look up the contexts they’re supposed used in.

Spanish Devsis: we will translate things from the English script! But no one on the team actually knows what any of these words mean 🥰 This word should means that, we are going to use it (it’s in the wrong context). Why not this word, it’s close enough to English (that meaning is outdated or unnatural sounding). And of course, my favorite /s MAKE SHIT UP! JUST MAKE SHIT UP!

How did they make a script worse than the English translation? Pretty easy actually! By not bothering to double check anything before publishing.

The amount of things I’ve misread people’s names as has got to be a record. So someone gave me a stupid argument which got me ruminating on ‘gender roles’ and misogyny. Basically the argument that Vanilla can’t be the bottom of a relationship because he’s the freak. Which, well there’s only one appropriate reaction for this.

I’m sorry do you have TikTok or something? How does being the freak in the relationship disqualify someone from being a bottom at all? Now here’s the part where this got me thinking about gender perceptions, specifically western.

In the west it’s common to tell anyone remotely fem appearing that they should ‘act fair’. Which often results in people being extremely reactionary towards anyone who appears fem and is into freaky nsfw things. That they should devote themselves to being ‘pure’ because anything else is seen as some sort of corruption. But it always ends up being blamed on the fem perceived person because “ew you gave into impure temptations”.

Which brings me back to. So anyone who’s aware of the original, or any Asian dub, knows he sounds very soft spoken. He is also very kind and patient with people. Which are traits that are often labeled as ‘woman like’ in the west. Which I can absolutely see creating a subconscious interpretation that, because of everything relating to sexism I just mentioned, leads to western fans thinking “woman like + freaky? eh that feels iffy. I’m just going to remove any traits that seem fem because that gels with my biases more”. Especially if these fans are chronically online and have never been in an actual relationship before.

The mushroom pokemon Amoonguss becoming a trans icon was something I didn’t ever expect to happen. But here we are and I’m so here for it. For anyone who wants context tldr:

in the finals of a notable VGC event there was Wolfe’s amoonguss vs Neil’s urshifu and despite urshifu waking up from sleep twice, and getting its opponent to critical health, amoonguss won.

Here’s the part why it’s a trans icon now. Neil the player with the urshifu was outed as a transphobe after comments of his leaked. Meanwhile Wolfe the player with amoonguss got in on the trans amoonguss jokes. So now trans mushroom Pokémon is a thing.

Learned something interesting. For some reason ‘sugar paradise’ in Kor and Jap got translated into ‘lazy paradise’ in mandarin.

Something that is making me overthink is the fact that Holly is called sacred/holy berry in Chinese. But that doesn’t make sense because mandarin has a word for Holly plants and afik her name isn’t ‘Sacred’ in Korean. I literally have no idea why it was translated that way.

Here’s something fun. During Smilk ep8 crash out he says 竟敢欺騙我。Which can be read as ‘how dare you deceive me!’ But the word for ‘deceive’ and ‘cheat’ are the same in mandarin. So that’s a funny mental image for me XD

Some days I go “where did this come from” when translating the script. Then I remember the fact I don’t translate anything in order of when it happened in the story. Oh okay that being confusing makes sense now. Probably should have translated the scenes in order but uh… my brain does not work in a linear fashion.

Boy do I love it when stupid people online look at someone else doing something that, important thing to note, just mildly annoys them rather than actually do something triggering or crossing any lines. But then feels the need to scream at the mods claiming we’re supposed to be ‘held accountable’ for something that isn’t actually important. I’m sorry you’re a complete idiot and think that a one off joke with no bearing on the plot, or a profile-image coming from an epic cutscene frame, counts as something worth throwing a whole ass tantrum over. No one said any slurs, no one has crossed any lines, no one spoiled the plot without properly formatting it as a spoiler. If you honestly think a two second joke with no bearing on the plot is something worth throwing a ‘no spoilers’ tantrum about then you need to get off twitter!
