i wish hinata being disowned after joining team 8 wasn't glanced over so much considering how much potential there is for her to change and grow because of it, especially with her team.

from what we know, the byakugan is able to cancel out almost all genjutsu — even those created by the sharingan. considering hinata is said to have the best eyes out of all of her clan, surpassing even her father and neji, this means she naturally has a talent for seeing through genjutsu and having an upper hand on genjutsu users.

kurenai is a genjutsu master, one that ranks jonin, which already informs us that she's strong and skilled even if she doesn't level up to some of ther other team leaders. kurenai also cares a lot about her team, and is shown to have sympathy for hinata and her situation.

what i'm getting at is after kurenai's meeting with hiashi where he tells her that he's disowning hinata, kurenai doesn't just leave hinata there. rather, she sees hinata standing outside the room after overhearing everything and tells her to come along with kurenai. with not much else of a choice, hinata follows.

they don't go back for hinata's things, not once. she doesn't get back her prestigious kimonos or hyūga training clothes, not even her signature jacket from the academy. kurenai doesn't want hinata to ever step foot near that compound again, and she certainly doesn't think hinata needs anything from there to remind her of what life was like there.

hinata learns to dress for herself, not to only wear what her father forces onto her or what will make her look invisible amongst others. she learns to fight in a way that compliments her strengths and weaknesses, not in a way that leaves her in pain and frustrated. she studies genjutsu, making use of her eyes in a way she was never allowed to before.

she learns what a family is, what a mother who cares for her is like and how it feels to have friends to look after her. she gets an outside perspective on how to help neji and hanabi, no longer afraid of what her former clan can do to her for talking to them.

she learns to be a person, one that she's proud of. she learns what it's like to exist outside the hyūga, no longer suffocating in a shadow or expectations. she learns what it's like to be hinata yuhi, how to love her last name.
