A silly headcanon of mine is that Daryl carries a carefully folded piece of paper on his pocket. It's a drawing that Judith and RJ made for him when they were smaller, after he took them on a ride for the first time ever on his bike, Michonne a bit worried but always trusting. Simple stick figures, holding a bigger stick figure's hand dressed in black with a long mop of hair, his jacket backwards because RJ wanted to include the wings. Big uneven letters spelling 'Best Uncle Ever' that Judith wrote. He pats his pocket absent mindedly, when he recalls a particularly smart thing Judith said or how RJ seems to mumble in his sleep. Or when they say 'love you, uncle Daryl' with their small voices, he's sure deep in his bones, that this is the purest love he has ever encountered.

There’s a dimension in TOWL that makes me feel closer to Michonne’s experience in the CRM. As a Black woman in many environments, just existing can put you in danger or create problems. That’s why I love how Rick protects Michonne from her own strength, especially in the third episode, because no matter what she does, people see her strength, and it’s not safe for her. I’ve never seen that in another TV show.

Danai Gurira

Danai Jekesai Gurira is a Zimbabwean-American actress, playwright, and activist. She is known for her starring roles as Michonne in the AMC horror drama franchise The Walking Dead and Okoye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

My poor Michonne was so traumatized by what happened to Andre, she couldn't even stand to hear baby Judith's cries. As she says to Rick later in the iconic "It must've been something else" convo, she expected him to take the formula and leave her bleeding outside. It speaks to her integrity that she chose to save a random baby and walk towards the prison while being badly injured in the leg. My sweet Michonne never imagined that baby would become her daughter and that prickly blue eyed man from the fences would be her obsessed husband.
