I think the biggest misconception among Death Note fans is that Light gave a singular shit about justice. It’s a really easy mistake to make, we see everything from Lights point of view and he thinks he cares about justice. He tells the viewer over and over that he’s doing all this to create a better world, one free of violence and crime but it’s, quite frankly, a load of horseshit.
He might’ve cared at the beginning, his first victim is one of the most straightforwardly evil characters in the show (if you can call him a character?) I mean, who wouldn’t try to stop a guy holding a bunch of preschoolers at gunpoint? The next victim is a creep (though I can’t remember if what he did was outright violent or just harassment) and Light has him hit by a truck. Smeared over the pavement. And… yeah that’s fucked up but Light saved that girl didn’t he? And then he goes absolutely insane and kills about 300 people in one night.
More under the cut bc I have a lot to say
If you’ve been in the death note fandom for a long time you’re likely to have come across this idea that Light wanted to protect victims. You see this a lot in fanfiction because most people who want to write about pretty boys making out don’t really want to get into the moral problems with killing random people (this is not an attack on fic writers btw. While they’ve been scrubbed from the internet, my middle school death note fanfictions were also not overly focused on the morality of one teenager giving random people the death penalty). I’ve seen several fics where Light is motivated by the corruption of police, by wanting to make the world safer for his little sister, by powerful people not being punished the way the poor are.
I don’t believe that it’s canon, but even the death note musical falls into this idea. The song Where Is the Justice slaps, but I think that it’s sort of fueled this “light as an anti-capitalist anti-police antihero” thing. This lyric in particular irks me:
Tumblr media
The thing is, I find all of these explanations boring!! In the manga and anime, Light is explicitly pro-police. His whole problem with the world is that the police aren’t murdering enough people. I’ve seen people make the argument that he’s trying to make sure people are punished for hurting people and don’t get away on technicalities but I really don’t believe that. Out of anyone, Misa has that motivation seeing as the court of public opinion decided that her parent’s murderer was framed (or she would have this motivation if any writer cared about her).
There is very little evidence that Light cares about anything other than power. He almost immediately goes from “I’ll protect people who are actively being threatened” to “I’ll kill criminals” to “I’ll kill anyone who gets in my way”. No matter how you feel about the death penalty, I think most people agree that it shouldn’t be decided on the whim of a 17 year old with delusions of grandeur.
I’m not saying anything new when I say that Light is a bad person, that’s literally what the story is about, but I don’t think that he was corrupted by the death note or that he started out with good intentions and lost his way. Light is an incredibly privileged character. He’s never experienced violence or poverty or drugs. He has an upper middle class family and is able to get into one of the best universities in the country. Light is invested not in securing a safer world for the future, but in making sure that he always comes out on top.

im in disbelief at the fact that a lot of folks are simply over palestine. like protests are dwindling down. people are not very interested in news related to gaza. some are simply over it.
israel hasn't let aid in gaza in 70 days. gaza has been starving for 70 days. the condition of people there is horrendous.
i find it distressing to think about children in gaza. how does one continue to have a childhood in a genocide? they don't have school. they don't have safety. they don't have food.
despite all this, the kids will be alright. they'll be alright once the genocide stops and they get back to 'normal'. till then, can we please try to support them however we can?
this fundraiser (verified) helps feed a family which includes two young children. please consider helping their mother take care of them.

one of my favourite things about saiki is how hes just chanting to himself 'i dont care i dont care i dont care i dont care i dont care i dont care everybody except for me and mine can get fucked' and meanwhile he's like scooping baby ducklings out of a storm grate to reunite them with their mama with his hands and LIGHTNING KICKing nendo out of the way of oncoming traffic with his foot and retrieving random childrens balloons from trees with his telekinesis and inspiring passersby to do the best with their lives that they can. he has the entire weight of the world perched on his head. in his opinion. but he doesnt care about it. not at all. prommy. honest. HONEST.
